Good stuff. I'd say that's viable.

I highly doubt that BK is fired, unless he is burn out and really wants to be gone. One name I haven't seen on here is Justin Fuente at Va Tech. Anyone see what he's doing in year one with a roster full of no names? Making $3.2 million right now.

Fuente was one of the hot names last season while at Memphis. Doubt he would leave Va Tech after one year however. Seems like the Hokies made a good hire thus far. Plus, he has a really good DC in Foster that helps out. Could ND get Fuente? Unlikely at this point IMO.

I'd love to land Venables. I would throw the kitchen sink at him or Grantham.

Hell yes. And Norvell is just picking up where he left off at MEMPHIS.

Neither of them are being whispered about and they are both very good coaches.

Just a question, but if this team loses one or two of the next three games (making it either 3-3 or 2-4 heading in to the Stanford game), does someone on the staff get clipped mid-season? I think we might be 3-3 heading in to Stanford which I think is absolutely unacceptable.

At what point does something need to be done to salvage the recruiting?

Well shit. I honestly thought that, even if it came down to a shootout, we weren't losing to Duke, no way would we be 2-4 heading into Stanford. This offense was too good, but we may have lost the team today. You might be right about losing two of the next three. Kudos to you.

Damn, came back to eat crow again. GO IRISH has ESP! I seriously thought this offense would keep us in every game. I thought maaaaaybe we lose 1 of the 3 between Duke, NC St, and Syracuse. This guy deserves more rep, I've hit him once already.

BK embarrassed himself today but a question to the "Fire Kelly" crowd:

who do you really think ND would get as a known improvement? Hint...Tom Herman isn't going to ND.

I'm confident whoever would replace BK could do better than 2-4 and getting boat raced in big bowl games. I appreciate your commitment to being difficult.

He's not being difficult, he's being realistic. If LSU, USC, Texas, and other top jobs are open, it's impossible that we get our first pick. We're going to be stuck with a 2nd or 3rd option at best. This could be a very bad year to start a coaching search. All three of those jobs will pay more and have looser restrictions.

That's a non answer. What coach is better than BK and would leave their current job for ND?

Exactly. If we're do have to replace BK, it's going to have to come from a likely unproven coach from a MAC school, or maybe the AAC again. You're not going to get a proven winner from a Power 5 program, because the proven winners are already at the top jobs. This team is redeemable under BK, but it's going to take time. We made the right move to get rid of BVG, defensively we're improving. Offensively we have to fix the run game and quit relying on the pass to bail us out all the time. It bit us in the ass today.

How many Top 5 wins did Lou have just between 88-93? How many does Kelly have over seven years?

I'd also ask how many times Lou played with a full team of 85 players...cause I believe most years he coached at ND there was no 85 player limit. We're never at 85.

That literally has nothing to do with anything because Lou's opponents had the same number of players.

Please stop trying to compare them. BK is not in Lou's class. It is not remotely close. BTW, the seniors on Lou's National Title team were recruited by who again? That's right, GERRY FAUST, literally the worst coach in ND history since the 50s.

Holtz had a 32-20-2 mark against teams ranked in the Associated Press top 25 during his career.

54 games against Top 25 competition and won far more than 50%, and performed far better than Kelly has through seven years, with longer schedules--and easier schedules too.

If we were to take a chance on an up and comer...

Our very own Mike Sanford
Geoff Collins
Lincoln Riley
Aranada

and my number one choice is Venables.

Pete Caroll was USC's 5th or 6th choice for HC. I say we grab Whittingham, Patterson, Dantonio, or Venables

Dantonio and Patterson aren't coming. Whittingham has been at Utah forever, I get the feeling he's comfortable there given no other program has snatched him up (11 years and going, and he's been at the program in some capacity since '94!). Venables means taking a chance on a coach that has no HC experience, but he has been a DC for a long time in the college game and is probably best equipped to make the move.

I'm going to sleep on it before I decide if I'm boarding the Fire Kelly bandwagon. But if we do, we need a coach with P5 head coaching experience.
Assuming we can't get D'Antonio, Herman or Fuente, I'd seriously think about Charlie Strong. The guy won at Louisville and has run one of the few programs with a comparable profile at Texas. Pair him with a good young OC (Sanford?) and you've got all the tools.
Edit: I'd also at least take a good look at Narduzzi and Paul Chryst. They don't get a lot of attention in these convos, but they're doing good things and seem like they'd be good fits.

Any prospective head coach needs to adequately answer these questions:

How many walkers have you killed?
How many people have you killed?
Why?

I will never jump on the fire any coach that stiill has a contract left band wagon. Why pay two coaches to lose. From an economic standpoint it doesn't make any sense.

I'm not ready to fire him yet, but he definitely has some more evaluating to do. That said, sometimes you have to cut a guy loose...not that I want to pay for two coaches. You have to think about your future. A bad coach can really put you in a hole as a program...you can lose recruiting momentum, high school pipelines can turn their back on you, revenue can drop off, donations disappear, and possibly stadium seats go unpurchased (We've been fortunate there). Sometimes it has to be a business decision. Sometimes paying a coach to leave means saving revenue to offset the cost.

Of all the problems at ND, money isn't one of them.

He's a good recruiter and the kind of shady guy we need at ND.
