Prologue:

One thing that I have wanted to see happen on IE, which doesn't seem to, is for some of our folks much more football-smart than I to take significant possessions in ballgames and break them down play-by-play.

After almost every game the board goes slightly crazy about how we/they feel about what just happened, and I can't always tell if some of the commentators were watching the same game as I did. Opinions fly thickly about as to whether "X", "Y", or "Z" played well or stunk the place up, and whether the coaching staff deserves raises or remediation.

Actually looking closely at those series which seem to elicit the most argument might help the rest of us evaluate some of this commentary better. Do we really stink?, or are we doing pretty well as Coach wants?

I'm not a good choice to do this, but I'm going to try one breakdown in the next post here. It will be the first Temple drive of any significance, and one which bothered many commenters.

Temple: "Threatening Drive #1": 12 plays to a missed field goal.

Play #1: Temple on their twenty. We line up with four-man front [Day/ Rochell/ Nix/ Williams, I believe --- I will make errors on personnel due to my game copy, so watch for that]. Calabreese/ Grace/ and Smith are LBs. QB hands to RB on sweep right. Farley reacts fast to set an edge near sideline. Calabreese misses. Day is pancaked. Rochell easily blocked. Back shoots through for 15 yards. BJ runs him out. Big hustling to ball by Grace and Nix.

Play#2: Temple 35. We line up 5-man front [Williams/ Nix/ Rochell/ Shembo, with Smith walking up for hand-on-ground.] Fox blitzes. No good /poor effort. Nix blocked by two linemen. Williams has best pressure, and Shembo would have gotten there too, but pass delivered at about four-count. Rochell= low effort. Grace senses pass and streaks back. BJ has good coverage but gets utterly phantom interference call. This error allowed drive to go on with 15 unearned yards.

Play #3: 50yard line. Five man front [Shembo/ Day/ Nix/ Williams/ Councell walks up.] Williams get decent penetration. Both Shembo and Day stoned by one man. Nix blocked by three men. Councell falls out of rush after contact. Playaction, but incomplete pass on three count delivery.

Play #4: 50yard line. Four man front but Shembo drops off. Day/ Nix/ and Tuitt have no chance as pass comes almost at count two. We are in zone, I believe, as Russell jams and drops. Councell should be in proper area, but Grace actually beats him to receiver. 7yard gain.

Play#5: ND 43. Four man front [Williams?/ Day/ Schwenke/ Tuitt]. DLine tries a twist unsuccessfully -- Day blundering into OLine. Councell blitzes, comes clean but not at full commitment and is late. Should have at least elevated. Luke presses flat and drops into zone.
QB reads this right [blitz plus drop] and shoots three count throw into vacant area. TE actually blocks Calabreese into Grace. Luke reacts to make tackle with Grace hustling in [despite Carlo] to help.

Play #6: ND 35. Four man front. [Tuitt/ Day/ Schwenke/ Williams]. Run action completely fools both Day and Calabreese. Schwenke gets buried. QB reads Tuitt who makes horrible non-effort at narrowing his gap. Williams good effort but play goes away. Grace has initial drop responsibility, but quickly sees QB keep and recovers for tackle. Jaylon Smith and safeties AWOL. 9yard gain.

Play #7: ND 26. Same ND line-up. DLine stones OLine and clogs line-of-scrimmage. RB ducks outside. Calabreese misses again. Farley rapidly up for stop with Grace hustling hard for #2. 4yard gain.

Play#8: ND 22..Four man front [Jones/ Nix/ Day/ Shembo]. Jackson blitzes. QB discombobulated about something, takes eye off snap and fumbles. Lou is through like a rampant bowling ball and nearly gets it. Shembo too has good penetration. 8yard loss.

Play #9: ND 30. Four man front [Jones/ Nix/ Day/ Shembo]. Shembo drops off quickly. Nix penetrates to wrong side, RB goes towards Day who has poor effort at point of attack. Jones unblocked; stands and watches. .... sorry my notes are incomplete here ... Shembo was second on tackle but I missed primary. Smith was lost in space, back to play. Calabreese reacted slow.

Play #10: Straight three-man front [Tuitt/ Nix/ Day]. Nix and Day blocked by two men each; Tuitt by only one [low effort]. Shembo dropping. Grace pushes TE out on a curve, then picked up by Farley. Four count pass delivery. Perfect pass might have scored, but Farley was pretty close.

Play#11: Same front. Tuitt and Day blocked by one man only and show little effort. Nix blocked by two. QB has all day. Williams dropping in Shembo's place. ND had ground to give here, and Grace and Fox kept receiver in front for tackle forcing fourth down.

Play#12: missed field goal.

===================================================================================

Impressions: Nix multiblocked every time yet still hustled hard. Grace far and away covered most ILB ground. Williams had fairly consistent penetration. QB never gave DLine much of a chance throwing on count three almost every time. Tuiit loafed. Day didn't show enough power. Councell looked tolerable but needs to read and commit all-out. Russell must have totally blanketed his man, as he was never targeted. Jaylon = rookie-lost-in-space. Temple's OLine is pretty good --- three returning starters and they plus their icewater QB make they far better than anyone could predict.

I don't know how fast I'd get to the next one, but maybe better folks can do a drive or two.

That was a fairly impressive effort. Reps to you, sir.
And it highlights my biggest concern from Saturday which is that a smart QB can pick apart our soft interior pass coverage before our pass rush can get to him. If it wasn't for the dropped snap they probably score a touchdown on that drive. Hoping Jaylon and Grace grow up fast.
I would agree, too that Temple looked far better than expected, especially on the lines. The heat may have hampered our bigs' effort a bit, too. It was pretty muggy out there.

I'm going to try another. Remember gentlemen that the combination of my poor game copy/ filming angles by NBC, and old eyes are going to make some errors.

Temple "threatening possession #2":

Play #1: T20. We are in a four man front again. [Shembo/ Day/ Nix/ Tuitt]. Councell blitzes from their left. Tuitt and Shembo are blocked by one guy, while Nix and Day get two. Luke and ILBs hard drop but quick react back. Pass comes out at three count. Tough but dropped.

Play #2: T20. We are in three man set with Shembo now off line. Shumate in game; he has coverage [not terrible but his guy is open.] Nix doubled as usual. Pass comes out on three count but again is dropped.

Play #3: T20. We are in four man front [Williams/ Tuitt/ Nix/ Shembo]. They are too bloodthirsty on this one. Nix is doubled. Tuitt and Williams have successful twist but Ishaq does not properly break down and flies by. Shembo thinks he has a long inside way to QB and abandons edge. ILBs drop very hard and in my opinion overdo it deep. QB shows athleticism and cruises through Prince's abandoned area for 18yards. Lou makes long hard run tracking him. Has to come out of game.

Play #4: T38. Four man front. [Tuitt/ Day/ Schwenke/ Shembo]. Press corners. Shembo gets pushed around but wall vs run is good. Fox sees it quickly. Back gets 4 yards.

Play #5: T42. Tuitt takes himself out, replaced by Williams. Otherwise same personnel. QB fires pass at TWO count. Jaylon has nice coverage and response in area but not thrown his way. Fox and Calabreese tackle receiver for 6yard gain.

Play #6: T48. Same four man front. Both Fox and Calabreese blitz. Doesn't make any difference, as dart-thrower QB gets rid of ball in 2-3 counts. [This guy by the way is better probably than even his coach suspected --- a real gamer.] Smith again reacts well. Lo Wood has coverage for four yard gain.

Play #7: ND48. Same four man front. Smith flips over to our right side. Fox is completely fooled by QB fakery. Day and Schwenke are soundly split by the RG and LG [this should not happen angles-wise], and the center goes forward and stones Calabreese. Fast gash running play for 16 yards. BJ tackles. Both safeties were showing up for us, and Smith and Shembo were hustling back hard.

Play #8: ND32. Four man front [Williams/ Schwenke/ Day/ Shembo]. Kona and Prince make good rush effort. BJ has good coverage. Throw comes out at four count and a little harassed [more psych than real]. Overthrown.

Play #9: ND 32. Four man front [Williams/ Rochell/ Nix/ Tuitt]. Nix blocked by two. Rochell knocked down. Tuitt loses contain. ILBs dropping hard. QB can't find anything and scrambles through Tuitt's area for ten yards. Grace, as usual, is first LB to react and show up. QB goes out of bounds.

Play #10: ND22. Lou encroaches [he is mad and frustrated --- probably about his teammates].
Play #11: ND17. Temple gives it back with delay of game. This was caused by a cleverly threatening double left side blitz threat by Jaylon and Austin. QB saw problem, tried to go to bench for switch, ran out of time.

Play #12: ND 22. Four man front [Tuitt/ Day/ Nix/ Williams]. We threaten same blitz with better timing/camoflage. Collinsworth free to QB; he feels it and moves to his left, but Day is breaking through there. Overthrow.

Play #13: ND22. Four man front [Lou out tired] [Tuitt/ Schwenke/ Day/ Williams]. Temple must think Kona is Lou and blocks him with three guys. This screws up the rest of their line and Tuitt finally decides to make a fool of the right tackle and runs nearly free for a sack. Williams has good pressure too. Grace again is by far the fastest reactor to what's happening in front of him.

Play #14: ND26. Four man front. [Shembo/ Nix/ Schwenke/ Tuitt]. Kona gets two blockers, but Lou gets only one. He, Tuitt, and Prince are breaking down the wall everywhere, and Shembo nearly gets there. Fox has topsy-turvy non-effective jumping blitz. QB feels heat and delivers incomplete pass covered well by Luke and Farley.

Play #15: FG is missed.

=========================================================================

amateur observations: we're in four-down the vast majority of the time... Plan? or Holding back? Tuitt should be a little ashamed unless he had a small health issue [and I've heard no such thing]. His NTs were working their butts off to get him single blockers and he rarely delivered. Again, Temple never challenged Russell. Again, Grace was by far the fastest instinctive and flexible ILB. Williams had a pretty good series again rushing. These guys want sacks sometimes to the extent that they don't keep contain. Diaco's D again allowed zero long plays. God bless Lou Nix no matter what anyone says... the big guy gave everything he had.

Thank you for doing this. I'm glad Grace was better than he seemed. Not surprised that Calabrese performed poorly, that was pretty obvious, but I didn't sense that Tuitt was loafing during the game. That was probably because my attention was occupied by Nix taking on 2-3 guys EVERY SNAP, and then watching the Temple O. Hopefully he gets his effort up. I was quite irritated by game recaps saying Nix didn't have much of an effect. He did his job very well, he consistently took up at least 2 O-linemen.

I'm not making excuses for poor effort, but I think the lineman were getting frustrated with the quick throws. It left them no time to rush. I would have liked to see more hands in the air. It's the best way to defend the quick throw.

I like this, keep it up OMM, offensive drives would be welcome as well. Reps for you.

I agree with Irish19, I think they were frustrated with all the quick throws. Plenty of times throughout the game they were inches from getting a sack, only for the QB to throw on a 2-3 count. Nix was getting frustrated about losing containment and not being able to catch the Temple QB on the scramble.

No one should be dissing Nix, he gave everything he had on every play.

^^^ This... I am surprised we did not see more hands in the air. I don't remember many if any deflected passes. With the size of our lineman.....this should have happened at least a few times when we rushed 4.

Mike... I'll break it down like this...... Temple used our aggressiveness against us in fine fashion. We are slow and weak in the middle of the LB corp and Diaco went bat Sh!t crazy blitzing the fringe.

End of story...

Diaco got out-coached/out-schemed. Very disappointing effort out of Mr. Helmet Head.

First, big ups to OMM for doing this. Very informative.

Second, I'd like to see this continue, but on a more comprehensive basis. MGoBlah analyzes every play after most games, and they grade each individual player as well. We've got enough football-savvy contributors around here to do the same. Beau and NDWorld247 both coach (along with others I've surely forgotten at the moment), OMM and WabashFalcon are at least journeymen at OL scouting, NDDomer2 is a former DB (I think?), etc.

Point being, I think IE could put together an impressive weekly post-game analysis if the right posters have the time and the desire to watch game tape and break it down for the rest of us. It would definitely improve the quality of discourse around here.

I'd love to contribute. I have the interest and the time. I was going to take a crack at it earlier but I was caught up in watching my new favorite non-ND college player, Mr. Winston.

I'll check out that other blog and give it a shot tomorrow.

Bennett got lucky at least 2x's getting beat on deep routes...lucky for us the qb overthrew it bad on both times that i can remember

In relation to this and the secondary in general, didn't it seem like when the QB took off running on several plays that no one from the secondary showed up in the frame until he was way downfield? There were a few times where I found myself wondering where they were, as if they were all 40 yards down field and were just waiting fo the d-line to track him down. Hard to tell what was going on with them watching it on TV though.

On the two drives that I've tried to analyze, the NBC camera work doesn't allow you to see where many players are who are not directly involved with the play [not surprisingly]. This is why we at IE will never have as good an eyeballing of the game as the Coaches' own game vid-cams will show.

But I'll make some guess, slightly educated, about why you don't see many DBacks showing up "early" on QB scrambles:

Diaco, we must admit, coaches VERY conservative defense. His idea is to never to get beat in two ways: 1). any over-the-top pass; and 2). any standard running play which can get cleanly to the edge and heading down the sidelines. That is: he refuses to give up a long "chunk" play. His philosophy is to make the opponent grind away down the field until they make a couple of mistakes in a row and their drive stops.

Kelly was impatient with this, but the success of it stopping point production by opponents converted him. Kelly is willing to give up yards as long as they are not points. This opponent ball-possession issue limits Kelly's number of possessions and therefore our own point totals, but Kelly thinks that winning 28-6 every game is just fine, and we don't need style points.

What this has to do with the original question is pretty simple: unless our CBs are zoning in the short side where the QB scrambles to, they are WAY downfield or across field and will not show quickly into the picture. They are stopping the deep threats. One safety at least is often way downfield too, and often both. However also, depending upon our coverage, we see the Harrison-Smith Phenomenon of a fast deep middle controller reacting to QB behavior and showing up like a Falcon Raptor to hunt the QB down. This year this should be Collinsworth, but in the Temple game, Diaco had Collinsworth threatening blitz a lot. If he doesn't get there, then the QB could scramble away.

I didn't see evidence that our DBs were slow to respond [Farley is in my opinion still a little slow to spot what's happening] but rather operating according to Diaco Rules.

I'll second all of this. And reps to OMM for kicking the idea off. Analysis such as this is very helpful for a guy like me who doesn't have near the football IQ that other IE posters have. I am starting to see more than I used to thanks to the analysis that people give, but it would be great if we had a dedicated game breakdown thread. It makes watching the games even more enjoyable.

Great idea. IU has a board that does this during basketball season. They post frame by frame images of the floor spread while breaking down the film. Then at the end sum up the whole play in a short, uninterrupted clip. It's a great way to take a look at what really happened, even if during a 3 second play. Just an idea for those who are willing and able to contribute. I, for one, don't know enough about the game nor about technology to help. I'm more than willing to read along :)

I watched last years ND/UN game again. Here's some observations with some thoughts/questions about this years game:

1. We put KLM on the center during passing downs in the 1st half, giving Nix a rest. He constantly got a strong push up the middle and was all over the field generally as a disruptive force. When Tuitt went out, we put KLM over Lewan. He played with an unreal motor. Have we replaced him? In the 2nd half, Nix was at NT during 3rd downs. Will we rest Nix in the 1st half again?

2. We did a lot of corner blitzes with Bennet Jackson.

3. Their linebakcer Ryan had a great game. Cave couldn't block him and either could the tight ends at the line of scrimmage or on WR screens. We're fortunate he's out. Their safety Gordon and Linebacker Morgan also had some impressive plays. Their cb Rymon Tayler had an int, but Golson threw the ball right to him in the seam between the cb and the safety along the sideline. TJ Jones beat Taylor deep on an outside shoulder sideline throw by Rees.

Their nickel back Jarrod Wilson could not handle Eifert in man coverage and as a result got a costly pass interference call that resulted in Rees's TD run. Wilson had an offer from ND, but chose Mich. He was beaten out by Courtney Avery in fall camp to replace Kovacs at SS, but Avery (who is only 5'9" and was recruited as a cornerback) went down with an injury and Wilson is the starter. Look for ND to pick on him. He got a start in the bowl game last year and gave up a 70 yard TD pass. Also, Kovacs was very good shedding blockers by WR and making tackles. We'll see how Wilson does. Hoke criticized him for not making plays in fall camp.

4. Niklas as a true freshman did a nice job on their DE Clark who was a true soph. Both are back.

5. Though Tuitt/KLM and Prince got a lot of snaps, Nix was rotated out a lot. Day and Schwenke both played. Ishaq Williams played a lot as well. Tuitt was matched up against both tackles, and had a lot of success against their RT Schofield. Their blocking back Kerridge had trouble with Shembo when they tried with that matchup.

6. Spond was very effective setting the edge. Whether it was a runnign back, or Robinson, Spond did not get beat outside. It was a very impressive performance. Their most effective running play was the QB keeper in an inside run, where Robinson rode the running back handoff while reading the defense and then picked a hole and took off. They had one long run by Tuissant where Jackson lost contain. Otherwise, despite having to keep and eye on Robinson, we contained their RB runs pretty well.

7. We had success with two tight end sets and just running power runs off tackle at their true freshman linebacker James Ross, who was undersized last year. Don't know what he'll be like this year. We tried to trap their DT with Eifert. Didn't work. We also had success passing out of the two WR sets, sending everybody out on patterns. Again, we were able to do this by defeating their 4 man rush.

8. They tried QB draws, but neither of their guards could handle our ILB's. Nix driving their center 5 yards back into the backfield didn't help Robinson to get a good start. They also tried to combination block Nix, by starting with a guard and then handing him off to the center on outside runs. Nix brushed both blocks away easily.

Watt really pounded their experienced DE Roh, who was a bit weak for a SDE. He's gone, replaced by true soph. Keith Heitzman who got dominated last year when he played. Martin struggled at times with Roh and Clark on passing downs. Lombard did not struggle much is pass protection, but struggled blocking their ILB Morgan who is back. Having Watt and Martin back is huge for us, particularly with Ryan out and when they have an undersized SDE on their side. Overall, their 4 man pass rush did not really bother us all game long and they did not blitz much, probably due to the trouble they had getting burned by Rees in 2011. When they did blitz Rees missed short and wide to a wide open TJ Jones on a hot route. On the same play Eifert was wide open in the middle of the field and Rees did not throw to him, which would have resulted in a big gain. This is one of the keys to the game imo. If they can't muster a pass rush and blitz, Rees must be consistent with his hot reads and deliver strikes.

Cierre did a nice job making guys miss and moving the chains. Theo looked rusty early, but came on strong in the 4th quarter and used his quickness to make their LB Gordon miss in space. We need guys to make people miss again. Michigan is touting their D-line depth. Last year when they substituted a starter, ND ran right at him.

10. Carlo did a nice job fending off pulling linemen, meeting them at the LOS and making plays. This is important because schematically they like to power you with pulling linemen. This is one of Carlo's strengths. Without Robinson, they want to play power, smash mouth football. With Spond out, I think they will test Smith/Councell to see if they're strong enough to hold the edge. They will also run fullback lead runs and test Fox/Carolo, hoping to be successful and then throw play action passes over the top. They tried to power Tuitt with Lewin, but he could not push im around and with nowhere to run, an unblocked OLB Spond made the tackle. Then, they had Lewan go after the backside LB and pulled a guard, but they could not coordinate it and neutralize Tuitt who stood like a stone mountain blocking the way or our playside ILB who was unblocked as a result . Their fan base believes Tuitt is out of shape and that Lewan will dominate him. We'll see. This matchup is another key to the game. When Tuitt came out of the game, we put KLM over Lewan. Who are going to be the lineman that can replace Tuitt when he goes out and Nix when he's out? I think Schwenke will hold his own against their center when Nix comes out, but I wonder if Ishaq can spell Tuitt successfully against Lewan. The talk from camp is that he can now play with his hands down as a 3-4 DE. We're going to find out imo.

11. Despite their int's, UM did have some success in the short passing game. Because ND spied Robinson with Teo, they hit some short crossing routes behind Teo. On 3rd down we blitzed both ILB's, Robinson hit another short crossing route. With a few exceptions, our DB's did a great job containing the YAC yardage.
