Pretty common expression. I guess another way to say it would be "agree to disagree".

Sheesh... some of you wait on baited breath to find something to nitpick me about. I get into an argument, I'm "tough guy Wooly". If I try to be polite in debate, I'm "playing a victim" or in this case apparently telling others how to think. I can't win with some of you. smh
Cuz I comment on your posts with regularity, cry me a river.

So like I said... is "crying a river" playing the victim card? Hard to keep up.

Like I said. I wasn't telling him how to think. I was being polite and I still get someone, in this case you, giving me shit.

If Wooly goes nuclear and salts the earth, it ain't gonna be in a thread about Stoops retiring. Nothing to see here, move along everyone.

OK, Wooly, I'll pick a nit for you – the phrase is "with bated breath."
Think "abatement."

I've often wondered: what is the preferred bait for breath? Minnows? Worms? Shrimp?

Yes because fans on a message boards are always a convincing way to get to the truth. LOL. Sometimes it is what it is. Tired of the grind. Jimmy Johnson quit coaching at the very same age because he was just tired of it. Not every coach is a lifer. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Jimmy Johnson quit because he was tired of Jerry "look at me" Jones being the backseat driver (coach).

Isn't Oklahoma's AD widely regarded as one of the best and most stable in the business? I don't follow Okie that closely but hard to believe he and Stoops aren't basically joined at the hip.
Also, the Mixon episode got bad press nationally but is of a pattern with how Stoops operated there for a long time, presumably with the university's OK. He took in Dorial Green Beckham after Mizzou booted him for various drug and woman-beating episodes, and signed other recruits various programs - including Notre Dame - wouldn't touch. If Mixon was the last straw, that'd be a change of course.
And it's not like they haven't been winning.
So yeah, I'd suspect the guy's just tired of the grind and needs a break.

Nothing got national press like the Mixon episode. IMO he was asked to step down and this was a way to do it somewhat gracefully.

This is the best post on that thread.

"Briles is driving around Norman like "Hey, what's up guys? Geez, that Mixon thing was a disaster, but I respect y'all's resolve and tenacity on that whole deal. Big Gulps, huh?"

Actually it was the opposite with Urban. He claimed a medical issue but the fact of the matter was he and Jeremy Foley did not get along. Everyone and their brother knew he'd be back in a year. Stoops has worked for the same school President and AD his entire 18 years and there were no issues between them. One of the reasons he always rejected other opportunities was because of his stable relationship with those two.

Actually, this isn't correct either [allegedly].

Urban and Foley didn't have a great relationship, but it would have been fine if Urban wouldn't have gotten caught banging a coed, and if Urban's wife hadn't forced the ultimatum upon him. [allegedly]

His health AND his relationship with Foley didn't have anything to do with it. Family/health reasons were the spinzone. His wife told him to get the f*ck out of Florida or else she'd bring the house down. [allegedly]

I guess Urban's wife was okay with him taking the Ohio State job because the school is really short on bang-worthy co-eds?

...

Backseat driver? I think you're being too polite.

Jerry spent more time in the right front seat with one hand on the steering wheel and his left foot on top on Johnson's right foot on the gas pedal.

At least his other hand was in Jimmy's lap as they won Super Bowls.

Stoops will become the college football version of Cowher. Every job that opens for the next 10 years, his name will be associated with it until he is either 70 or he takes one of them

Just trying to be nice today, but you're right. I can't stand Jones or his ego.

My guess...........Fall out from the Mixon fiasco. As a reward for his service, OU lets him step down and remain with the school to save face. Gone within a year.

This was the very first thing that popped into my head, too. I am floored that no one in the sports media (except Clay Travis) are even throwing out the question of whether the Joe Mixon video led to this.

On paper he's an all time college football coach. Of all the "all time" coaches, how many of them retired in June?
