Serious question. Holy cow did that D play amazing in the second half. Unbelievable performance. I'm simply speechless. They were put in the most impossible situation ever and answered the bell. That was the most impressive, gritty performance I have ever seen in any sport.

No Lee helped. But, still the Defense manned up!

I think a lot of it was when Tommy went down they knew they had to step up. Bobby D called one hell of a second half. That maybe his best half of football at ND.

Couldn't agree more. Not just a great defensive performance, but "great" when you KNOW there's no help on the other side of the ball -- no first downs, no comebacks, nothing between you and winning or losing. Phenomenal.

I agree, what a dominating performance! It looked like USC had no chance. And those holding penalties were caused by our fantastic rush, not just random SC mistakes. Awesome!!

Don't forget that the yellow flag had 9 tackles for 90+ yards lost.

I was thinking that, too, but looking back at most of those flags, they were penalties that directly affected the play. It wasn't just carelessness giving us gifts, it was U$C pukes getting beat bad and doing whatever they could to try and cover up their whippings.

I couldn't believe the field position that USC had the second half. D stepped up to who we thought they were.

Some of those were them being boneheads, others were us forcing holdings with our DL playing awesome.

USC had drives starting at our 33, 47, 34, and their 48... and came away with zero points. How is that even possible? EL OH FREAKING EL @ USC.

There was no way ND should have won that. And maybe now Tommy will get a bit of respect.

One of the best half's for a defense on any level of football I have ever watched. The defense knew what they needed to do and they completely shut them down

Also Jaylon Smith on that INT, you just cant teach that. Kid has one hell of a future

The defense was great, but man that D-line was outstanding in the second half!

But Diaco was the assistant coach of the year last year because he couldn't make half time adjustments, right?

Great thread, nailed it.

And in truth, the 2nd half may also reflect what happens when you have a fantastic recruiter, who happens to be a meathead, for a head coach. Giving linemen chicken to boost morale only goes so far, at some point you have to coach. Kelly coached, Orgeron did not.

(Now if we can get 3 more outs the Sox are in the Series and my night is complete. A sufficient excuse to have one more shot of Blanton's as a nightcap after way too many out at the bar...)

They were decent in the first half. Some gashes, but only 10 points. But, yes, the second half was really special. Amazing performance.

Brian Kelly 3-1 all versus USC.

Pretty much says it all.

It was ugly, and USC is in the toilet relatively, but still nice to think about. It wasn't long ago when they totally overpowered ND on both sides of the ball.

True, but would you rather barely lose to your biggest rival?

Or

Kick them while they're down?

Pretty easy choice, I think

They shut down the run in the 2nd half. Redd had 93ish yards at half and finished with 112? Nix, Tuitt, and Day dominated. Day wasn't in much but was very noticeable when he was in. Their domination allows Shembo to be at his best, pass rushing while keeping the LBs clear to shoot the gaps freely.

The young CBs did quite well although Butler got away with a defensive holding. ND also cut down on missed tackles. I noticed Hardy was in for a couple plays but not Redfield.

ND did exactly what they needed to do to win and against USC, I'll take it. No doubt they would've blown the doors open had Rees not been injured.
