Wish we would do an I.E. Top 25. Two rounds of voting for each position starting with #1. First round would be a large list and second round narrowed to the 5 highest vote getters in round 1. Wish I knew how to do polls etc..

I will make this happen today!

To avoid crowning The Beatles right away, I think we should make the stipulation that bands have to be judged based on their work that falls under "Classic Rock." Most Classic Rock stations don't play the early Beatlemania stuff and the British Invasion. You're talking the late 60s to break up Beatles, so Magical Mystery Tour, White Album, Abbey Road stuff, etc.

Bkess8 - when you do the polls, please clarify definition / requirements so all of us don't get lost in debate on crap other than who's best.

Ok so to kick this off we need to lay down some rules of what is or what isn't Classic Rock.

A thought on what to decide on like time frame? 1965 to 1989

Throw out there what you think should be thought about when deciding on the greatest band and i will add them when I make the Classic Rock Polls.

I've always considered the Beatles as Pop but they evolved from bubblegum pop & covers ("I Wanna Hold Your Hand", "Twist & Shout") to Pop Rock where Lennon/McCartney's songwriting really shined & made them HoFers.
There was nothing else to evolve from. The Beatles more or less invented rock. They can't have been "hard rock" because "hard rock" didn't exist yet.

don't think so.

early beatles were HEAVILY influenced by the likes of Buddy Holly, Elvis, and (like keith Richards and lot of the brits) Chuck Berry.

no british band can or will ever lay claim to having "invented" rock or "rock and roll". if anything it was the long forgotten delta blues guys who influenced Holly, Berry, Elvis.

Three Dog Night has been mentioned here before, you could add them to the list. Iron Maiden. Judas Priest. Dio. Billy Idol. Thin Lizzy. Bon Jovi. Dire Straits. The Ramones. The Cars. The Clash. The list was already pretty good though.

The Beatles did not invent rock. Not even close. First mega group, but inventors no.

Yup. Many roots to rock and roll. Took a history of rock and roll in college. Funny, but one of my hardest classes. Wiz must be very young to think the Beatles invented rock and roll.

For me, classic rock typically had an element of blues in it or was blues based usually: Clapton, Hendrix, ZZ Top, Zeppelin, etc. Maybe a few exceptions like Queen, but the vast majority of real classic rock was blues based.

I wasn't making a historical claim, I was responding to the notion that The Beatles should be disqualified from this poll on the basis that they're not "rock enough." My point was that there was nothing "more rock" than The Beatles because rock itself was still in its relative infancy.

I'm not saying The Beatles should be disqualified from this poll, but I think the stipulation needs to be made that you can't include their early stuff, the Beatlemania screaming girls phase. None of that music is typically played in a Classic Rock format, it's usually lumped more with "Oldies." The Beatles stuff that is played is Magical Mystery Tour through Abbey Road stuff.

i'm gonna go out on a limb here, one of my all time favorites, y'all can call me soft, for some reason his music has stuck with me thru all phases of life, but he really isn't "rock and roll":

John Denver

(note: yes it does bother me that North Dakota has him on his avatar and I pretty much disagree with him on everything!)

Helter Skelter... when I first heard that song years ago I was like, "WHA???... these are the same fools that did, 'Love Me Do'.... ???"

Dawg, you're excluding Sgt. Pepper, the single greatest rock album of all time.

I don't know much John Denver but Take Me Home Country Roads is probably one of my top-10 favorite songs.

I'd say the Stones were more rock than the Beatles easily. The Bealtles formed in 60 and the Stones the next year, originally as the Blue Boys. Beatles definitely are rock, but they are also pop to me. Of the early English bands, the Stones to me drove "rock and roll" while the Beatles drove pop and to some degree trip rock lol which was later dominated by Floyd IMO. Disqualify them, hell no.

I love Sgt Pepper, but it's overrated as the greatest album of all time. Dark Side Of The Moon, Layla, Live At Fillmore East, and Led Zeppelin II are better. For that matter, I think The White Album is better.

Helter Skelter was incredible. Beatles were all over the place musically which in itself made them amazing. Love the Crue's remake too.

That's fair. I'm not saying that The Beatles are the most classic-rockiest of all bands. But they're classic-rock enough to be included in the category.

It's like... Steph Curry is one of the best point guards in NBA history. You could make the argument that John Stockton was more point-guardier than Curry is, but that doesn't really play into the debate of who's better. The question of who's better is simply that. It's not a question of who better exemplifies the category.
