So essentially:

Beat Navy, Pitt, BYU, Lose to Stanford: Pinstripe vs. Rutgers/Cincy/Houston

Win out: Orange vs. FSU

Obviously I'd prefer BCS bowl, but I would be ecstatic to watch a ND game at Yankee Stadium.

RDU Irish and drayer54 logic would say that Fresno State and Northern Illinois should be top 10 teams.

Disagree. UNI barely slipped by Iowa. Only OSU gets away with that and stays in the top 10.

Fresno doesn't play anyone ever.

I love my Irish, but would be worried about another BCS knockout if the draw were FSU.

We would get slaughtered by FSU. Too bad the Orange Bowl has the first choice this year. I wish the conferences that lost BCS Bowl bids would get first choice so we could theoretically play in the Rose Bowl against OSU instead.

They do. The Orange has the first choice once the NCG replacements have been selected. If Oregon makes the NCG and the Rose Bowl wants us, they will have first choice before the Orange.

They do. The Orange has the first choice once the NCG replacements have been selected. If Oregon makes the NCG and the Rose Bowl wants us, they will have first choice before the Orange.

It would go

BCS #1 replacement
BCS #2 replacement
Orange Bowl
etc

So the Sugar Bowl would pick first, could end up there I guess.

And if both we and Oregon beat Stanford, it would seem pretty unlikely that there's a second Pac-12 team in the Top 14 (next most likely would be UCLA or ASU, who'll yet play each other with the winner likely facing Oregon the Pac-12 title game).
Would love to get Ohio State there.

SBT's Eric Hanson just published an article on our BCS prospects. He quotes CBS's Jerry Palm, who confirms what most here have predicted: (1) if we win out, we're likely headed to the Orange Bowl against the ACC champ; (2) if we fall short, we're likely headed to the Pinstripe Bowl against the AAC champ.

That's a lot riding on the difference between winning out and losing one game. But I agree. Win out and oranges are in the Irish future.

This doesn't make sense. The AAC gets an auto BCS bid though, don't they?

They do and UCF is in line to get it since they beat Louisville. The AAC runner up or third place team would probably be the opponent for the Pinstripe I believe.

You are correct (3rd place). Matches the 7th place bowl eligible team in the Big12 (which they will likely not have a 7th bowl eligible team).

RDU Irish and drayer54 logic would say that Fresno State and Northern Illinois should be top 10 teams.

Playing in a BCS conference counts for something. Those teams essentially need to go undefeated to make a BCS bowl.

Losing to an unranked team should drop you behind any BCS conference undefeated at this point of the season. The caveat, you have plenty of time to play your way back in front of them if the drop one and they have the benefit of the doubt if they stay undefeated. Is it really fair to say Stanford should finish ahead of Baylor or Miami if all three teams win out?

Now Fresno St and Nor Illinois won't be challenged so it makes sense for them to have a bigger hill to climb.

Remember its the THIRD CHOICE from the conference not the THIRD PLACE. Placings in conferences hold no sway in where teams go. Bowls are trying to make the best matches possible.

If all three teams win out? No. Baylor will have beaten several ranked teams. Miami will likely have beaten Florida State twice. Stanford will still have lost. Over the course of a season, undefeated matters. But right now, eight games in, it matters less than performance to date.
And, really, this is all talk. Polls don't actually matter until the last one.

Either we stay at #25 and Michigan drops to #24, or we go unranked with Michigan at #25.

I just don't think Michigan will drop out of the BCS Standings.

Head-to-head SOS between ND and Michigan is identical....

58-42 (.724%)

Really? They were 21st and they got walloped by #22. And aside from beating us they've done nothing. We didn't do ourselves any favors today but I don't know how they stay in the Top 25. Other than that it's hard to see much change. Texas Tech will drop but not all the way out. Miami will fall back to the high teens. We'll still be looking up at both of them from 24th.

Barring a Fresno St. loss we should be 24th. We will definitely pass Michigan and hopefully Texas Tech. Tech got destroyed at home but I don't think they drop 10 spots. Michigan will drop out of every human poll so their BCS will tank.

Texas Tech literally has beaten no one. There 2 best wins are 4-5 West Virginia and 3-6 TCU.
