Interestingly enough, I had something similar happen to me, though different circumstances.

I was watching a thunderstorm from an outdoor porch a few years back and lightening hit my neighbors tree and sent a side splash to my other neighbors house. Think of it going diagonally across my back yard. As it happened, I was holding a wine tumbler and it shocked my hand pretty good. It blistered and everything.
