ND's Kelly won't punish Neal for play
October, 26, 2010 Oct 264:08PM ETEmail Print Comments By Andrea AdelsonNotre Dame linebacker Kerry Neal appeared to stomp Navy slotback John Howell on the abdomen in his team's 35-17 loss on Saturday, but will face no punishment for the play.

A video clip of the play has gone viral on the Internet. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly briefly addressed it Tuesday at his news conference, saying he had seen it but did not think the play needed to be dealt with.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said in a phone interview Tuesday he saw the play when he reviewed the tape. Niumatalolo did not see it in real time.

"Football’s an emotional game. I’m sure he’s a great young man," Niumatalolo said. "He probably wishes it didn’t happen. That’s as far as I’ll go. Our guys have moved on."

Since the game, several articles have denounced Navy for using chop blocks, perpetuating the remark former assistant Corwin Brown made last year insinuating Navy was a dirty team. Brown was referring to a play that resulted in an injury to linebacker Brian Smith and was flagged.

Navy was called for no penalties this year against Notre Dame, and uses legal cut blocks, not chop blocks.

"The only problem I have is the verbiage of the chop block," Niumatalolo said. "Chop blocks are illegal. We cut block like every other team. Last year with our guy cutting behind the ball, I agreed it was a bad play. We told him that and we took him off the field. We don’t play like that. We don’t cut block people after the snap. It wasn’t Coach Kelly and his staff who were saying it. It was more the media and fans. I can’t really control how people think or what they say."

The word "stomp" is such a blatant misconstruing of what happened that it poisons the debate...if you want to see a stomp watch "American History X."

When people use rhetoric like "Kerry Neal stomps navy player" or "Dayne Crist is terrible" or "the President is a nazi/communist" it's impossible to have a reasonable discussion. How people can use their eyes to look at that video, and then use the word "stomp" is beyond me.

Yeah well I don't know what to say. It did seem some what deliberate but the Navy guys reaction made it seem like it wasn't.
What upsets me most (and I know it shouldn't cause thats just what we expect and that its from Bleacherreport) is an article like this and its comments
Notre Dame Football: Brian Kelly Fails To Reprimand Kerry Neal For Navy Stomping | Bleacher Report

Fair or not, it is the perception of those not drinking the Kelly Kool Aid, and that of some ND fans as well.

Kerry Neal did not stomp in my opinion and no one thought it was that big of an issue at the time to include, Kelly, the Navy coach and the refs. He did step on him but he was also trying to get to the pile. Things are going to happen in football, and I don't see this being a malicious thing at all.

When I first read the headlines I thought it would be really bad like a stomp or a kick. But it looks like he just jumps towards the pile and steps on him. If you don't want to get stepped on in football don't lay on the ground in a pile.

Great points IiS. I tried to make that point about the "Stomp" in the other thread about this.

It is very difficult to have perjorative comments start a reasonable discussion of facts.

He's a socialist, not a communist. What is unreasonable is for people to be surprised by that.

Can't believe people are still trying to make something of this. Just watch the tape and you can see Neal is focused on the pile like he should be.

I thought it was a stomp. I define 'a stomp' as picking up your foot, and slamming your foot down on the ground (either flat footed, or with the heel). i thought he clearly did it once and missed the player, then picked up his foot again and got him (while going for the play).

That being said, I also agree with the navy coaches and players, and ND's coaches players - its non-issue, nothing to see here, time to move on.

Who's Neel? i don't see him on the roster. Must be on the practice squad with Christ, Kumara, Armondo Allan, and Flemming. Maybe that's where coach Weiss and Kelley are too

Hard to tell.

You could make either case:

A. Neal deliberately steps on the player
B. Neal was trying to get on the pile and accidentally stepped on him
