BK Talks Injuries, Replacements
Written by Christian McCollum Wednesday, 13 October 2010 17:34

Allen may miss the Western Michigan game.Another day, another injury for Notre Dame to deal with.

Running back Armando Allen did not participate in Wednesday’s practice because of a hip flexor. Allen’s status for Saturday’s game against Western Michigan is in doubt.

“We’re going to be cautious with him,” Brian Kelly said following the practice. “We think we can be with Cierre (Wood) and (Robert) Hughes and Jonas (Gray) is going to be back this week. We’ve had six rugged games, physical games. We’re going to be cautious here going into this weekend with Armando.”

Gray is cleared to play after missing the last two games with a strained groin. Allen will dress for the game and is already lobbying the head coach to play.

“He’s already told me that he’s got to play,” Kelly said. “I didn’t know the history, but he hasn’t got to seven games in a season so this is kind of a milestone for him. He’s going to want to play, we just want to be careful with him.”

Offensive tackle Taylor Dever missed the Pittsburgh game with a hamstring injury and he could miss this weekend’s game as well.

“He’s still not anchored the way I want him on pass rush,” said Kelly. “We’re going to have to see. That’s not a situation where I’m ready to make a decision on him. He’s going to have to show another day. He was better today than yesterday. I need to see a little bit more tomorrow.”

Matt Romine beat Andrew Nuss out for the vacant tackle spot last week and although the staff was pleased with his performance, he’s going to have to beat Nuss out again this week if Dever can’t go.

“They’re competing all week again,” Kelly said. “You’ve got to understand, Nuss hadn’t had much play at left tackle. He’s picking it up really quick. We’re fortunate, we’ve got two guys there we feel confident in.”

Kelly confirmed that tight end Kyle Rudolph will have surgery on his hamstring on Friday with former Irish and NFL linebacker and current Notre Dame surgeon Brian Ratigan performing the procedure.

Kelly is confident in sophomore Tyler Eifert and senior Mike Ragone to step in for the All-American candidate at tight end.

“I really like both of them,” Kelly said. “They’re a great tandem and a complement. I think they’re going to fill in and do a really, really good job. I’m not concerned about that position really.”

The staff has also been pleased with the development of junior linebacker Darius Fleming at the Cat position.

“He’s struggled a little bit in space, especially in pass coverage,” Kelly said. “You remember the Michigan game, we really struggled into the short field on that last drive and a lot of that was his fits were not proper. He’s gotten much better at those. I think that’s the first progression and then when we kick him down and put his hand in the ground and go four-down, he’s been really good off the edge.”

It sounds like we're sleeping on the WMU game.... basically using it as a bye week to get people healthy. I don't like it.

I hope Cierre, Eifert, etc. are as ready to play as BK makes it sound.

I think they are just being cautious with the starters that are questionable for Saturday. I understand that Armando Allen really wants to play but if I'm BK, I sit him for at least this game. A hip flexor could turn into a lingering injury. Obviously we have no choice with Eifert and Ragone due to Rudolph's surgery on Friday. BK needs to be cautious in this game and sit the players that are even questionable. If Allen were to play and worsen his injury, I would hate to log on here Saturday night and see all the posters question BK's decision to play him.

If we can't beat WMU without Allen and Dever than we have bigger issues. Get the team healthy

We are going to beat WMU, there is no doubt in my mind. We have some talent for sure and I for one am not too concerned with productivity this weekend. I expect to see Cierre explode this weekend, he is a gamer and has worked his tail off to get better, I also like our TE situation. I think we should defiently rest some players this weekend, and Allen is on top of that list. The last thing we need is for him to aggravate his injury and make it worse.

Don't like hearing that Armando is dinged that much, but liked everything else in the article. Maybe Kelly can convince Armando to be a rev-er upper on the sidelines, since he's our main natural leader this year. I like both the O-line opportunities to play, and the running back carry opportunities. And I doubt that the team is thinking that playing studs like Wood, Hughes, Gray, Nuss, Romine, Ragone, and Eifert indicates that we're "sleeping". A lot of talent sitting there waiting to jump.

I was at the Stanford game and you could definitely tell that AA was playing through a lot of pain.

I know this is like apples and oranges here, but no one thought Rudy would be out the rest of the season and his injury was that severe, would hate for Armando to hurt himself even worse, because you are correct, he was another guy playing through pain. Although I admire the toughness, let him rest this week and get a few other RBs some PT and hope that Allen gets to 100 percent. I just would hate for him to make a nagging injury even worse.

I did. And I said so in the game day thread.

Hamstring injuries are a tricky thing, and a tough call for coaches, especially considering he is your stud Clydesdale. But if he were a track athlete, which he was being asked to do vs. "normal" tight end duties, I would have sat him out for a week and had him jog distance for at least a month before I even let him attempt a sprint at 75%.

But THAT is an apple/orange comparison.

Too bad for Armando not to get this game and rack up some stats. He deserves a 100 yd rushing game after grunting it out through our tough early schedule. But being healthy is the most important thing going forward.

by apples and oranges I was referring to comparing Allen and Rudy's injuries. My real point is that I would rather be cautious with Allen so he doesn't hurt himself more. We knew that Rudy wasn't 100 percent.... you could see it when he was on the field, but we played him anyways. Hope Allen is able to play on Saturday, but to be honest I would rest him a week.

I know buddy, and I agree with your point. I meant to say "another", as in "another apple/orange comparison." Oops.

We should have no problem this weekend without Dever and Allen. We have a month to get our team healthy and ready for the last quarter of our season. I don't want to disrespect our next three opponents in any way but we should be able to win rather handily. We need to be 100% for Utah. That is a huge game for us. If we lose the Utah and USC game then we will have only won the games we "should have" won this year and proved nothing. We need to be able to give Utah and USC our best shot.

I kind of know what you mean, Beating either Utah or USC is huge, but if it doesn't happen it's not the end of the world and we can still take a few good things from this season. I agree that the next three games are VERY winnable and I too don't mean any disrespect to any of those schools. If we can win against USC or Utah then we have proven that we can win a big game. If not, then at least we won the games we were supposed to win (although I think we should have won against Mich and MSU.., but nevermind about that) and that should at least be something to be happy about. A winning record and a team headed in the right direction. Also, boing to a decent bowl game and hopefully getting a win would be HUGE for us.

I agree that no matter what we can take some positives out of this season. Already you have to look at Dayne's progression, the defensive improvements, and our overall team attitude. We have a lot to take from this season already but beating Utah or USC will send a stronger message going into the off-season. We need to win a game over a ranked opponent and it looks like Utah will be our only chance. We need to change the attitude of this program and get the kids to further buy into this message. After a rough first half of the season, we need a big win and we need to close out 6-1 with a convincing bowl win.

Running the gamut from fan profiles 1 through 6 (or wherever it stands currently) I feel that we NEED to beat Utah – who will probably be the only ranked team on our remaining schedule. Beating USC, whether ranked or not, is a moral imperative.

Beat them both and then we'll talk.

Not entirely sure of your message? Talk about what?

Talk about making progress, heading in the right direction in terms of coaching and recruiting, talk about a return to prominence in the college football arena, talk about a National Championship (that 'Bama finds impossible to claim in the most perverse and convoluted manner) ; topics such as this.

Sorry about the run-on sentence-paragraph. I'm "loosening up" for tomorrow's game.

Bottom line: as a die-hard, emotional, oftentimes realistic but always optomistic fan; I see a victory against Utah as an important gauge of our progress under Kelly vis-a-vis talent, coaching and so-called "scheming" qualities; AKA the no-huddle spread and the return to a 3 – 4 defense. The USC game is always a "What though the odds be great or small" situation to sate the blood lust that is the rivalry.
