I have no injury history whatsoever so help me out here.

I was playing basketball today and heard that dreaded pop in my knee. I went down and for the first 15 minutes couldn't put any weight on my knee, but there wasn't a sharp pain or anything. Four hours later.... I can walk but my knee can't support more than ~30% weight. There is some pain on the back of my knee, but not really sharp. I would describe it less as pain and more as discomfort and weakness. No noticeable swelling FYI.

I would ice it tonight, and take some motrin. If it still feels the same tomorrow morning then go to the doctor.

Sounds like when I tore my meniscus back in high school. Had surgery years later. MUCH better after, but never the same. Hoping you have a better prognosis...

Ughhhhh

Doing some research... Could it be hamstring tendonitis? The pain right now is directly in the back of my leg behind the knee. Could that be the pop I heard?

I am not a doctor or anything or know how old you are but I had a guy on my football team that tore his ACL and he could still literally run on it. The only advice I can give is go to the doctor ASAP. Do not go to work tomorrow. You need to get that checked out before your other ligaments start tearing from supporting the ones that possibly have torn. Obviously if you are above 30 your body will not recover the way it used to so don't wait it out.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it's nothing bad but I would get it checked out as soon as possible.

I have the same experience history as Piombino times 2 medial menisci tears, 2 arthroscopic surgeries. Good result, but never the same. I would suggest an MRI.

The same exact thing happened to a friend of mine. That pain in the back of the knee was bothering him but he didn't go to the doctor till the next day, next thing ya know he calls me saying he had ruptured some vein in the knee that caused a clot and the doctor was rushing him to emergency surgery and they might have to amputate. Na just kidding. Rub some dirt on it.

Back of the knee is one of the two spots I experienced the pain for the most part with the torn meniscus. Other was below the knee cap.

I tore my ACL 25 years ago. Heard the pop and hurt like hell for a few minutes, but then it felt pretty much OK. It could be a torn ligament, a meniscus, or you just strained something. Sometimes bad knee injuries hardly hurt or swell, and minor sprains hurt like mad. No way to know what happened without seeing the doc and probably getting an MRI. Go see a doctor asap.

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express once. Like BobD said, rub some dirt on it.

As you can see from the responses, it could me a number of things and maybe something not mentioned. Get to the doctor my friend.

This would be my guess. I've had 6 knee surgeries including an ACL reconstruction. The pain in the back of the knee seems to indicate the torn meniscus. My sister just went to the doctor for the same pain and that was her diagnosis. Hope I'm wrong. Good luck!

Definitely should go to the doc.

Meniscus is a quicker recovery than other ligaments right?

The location sounds like a torn meniscus, but you'd usually have swelling and pain with that. Instability/weakness without swelling usually indicate ligament damage.

If when you move it, you feel a catching or clicking, that can be the torn meniscus interfering with the joint. Either way, if you swell up or don't feel better today, it's time for an orthopedist or some imaging.

Edit: my wife is a PT, and I'm asking her this stuff. I'm not a medical professional myself.

Depends on the grade and whether you decide to have surgery. Meniscus tears, even small, can bug you for life because the only surgical option is just to go in and snip the torn part (a removal really, not a repair). I tore mine in HS and still feel it pop occasionally.

I tore my ACL and lateral meniscus at the same time. My doctor said it was one of the worst tears he's seen. My ACL snapped so violently that it wedged under my kneecap preventing me from straightening my leg before surgery. 4 months post-op I was ready to go, but my doctor held off another 2 months before clearing me because of the meniscus damage. He also wanted me to stay away from weighted squats and deadlifts for at least a year because the meniscus takes so long to heal.

Welp, saw an ortho doc and he said he's almost positive that I tore my ACL. Need an MRI to confirm.

Good times!

You're clearly more Kobe than Lebron and you just went up in my book. Lebron would have had them remove the roof and have a helicoptor land center court to take him off.

Good luck!

I tore my ACL freshman year of HS. Before I tore it, in the middle of the season I was starting OLB on varsity and the only freshman that played.

Tore my ACL at RB for the JV team. Devastating.

Decided I wanted to walk when I was older (not my first knee injury) and switched to water polo, where I had a very successful career. Team went 23-3 my senior year, with an Easterns championship and back to back league titles, while the football team went 0-10.

At the time, tearing my ACL seemed like the most devastating event in my life. Turned out to be one of the best things that happened to me. You'll be alright.

You were the starting line backer on the varsity and they had you playing running back for JV games too? I hope your entire coaching staff from high school now work at a car wash where they belong. I had the same type of coach in high school... Weak.

Sorry to hear about the injury. Good news is is that you are better after surgery nowadays than before. Half of the pictures in the league don't hit their stride until they have Tommy John! You'll be fine with a good Ortho in Philly...

Be glad you're not a Bama fan or you'd be having surgery at the local hog farm by some guy with 3 first names and an associates in truck driving from Muscle Shoals Junior College

Medical technology today is amazing. As long as your doc is competent you'll be just fine.

My daughter tore her ACL during her last home volleyball game last year. She missed her entire senior season of basketball which just crushed her and the whole family. She has recovered quite remarkably. The doctor said she can't do any cutting type sports for a year. She is looking forward to playing intramurals at Central Michigan next winter. She did do therapy for almost 6 months but I believed it help her incredibly. Good luck to you with your diagnosis. Just make sure you get the nerve block. My daughter initially didn't get it. She waited until after surgery to get it. That is if you need it.
