They have come a long way when it comes to knee surgeries and wether it's the ACL or the meniscus you should be able to be back to your regular activities relatively soon (way sooner if meniscus). From what I've observed the choice of surgeon and physiotherapist is key and I would personally chose a surgeon who favours quick (after the surgery) aggressive physio. From personal experience I would add that continued strengthening of all the muscles around the knee will make help a great deal years after the surgery. Good luck!

Just received my MRI results. It confirmed that I tore my ACL... and also my meniscus.

Anyone have experience with a dual tear? Assuming I get surgery, it seems like it will complicate the recovery a bit.

If AP did it in nine months, I bet you can get it done in 8.

In all seriousness, good luck on the recovery.

My personal opinion... I don't think it will complicate the recovery at all. The recovery time associated with ACL surgery will be what will be keeping you on the sidelines not the meniscus. As I mentioned in an earlier post, if you're young, I would suggest getting an aggressive (I would get a surgeon that favours this) experienced physiotherapist and being dilligent with the rehab. Good luck!

The meniscus is routine now-a-days. The ACL with proper rehab will be like it never happened, unless you are a world class athlete. My daughter's doctor said it would take a tenth of a second of a 40 time. You will be fine. Are you taking a hamstring tendon or getting one from a cadaver?

I blew out my entire knee in 2009 on a parachute exercise in the corps. As long as you don't have a military doc repair it you'll be fine hahah seriously though good luck also side note I had it redone in '11 and it's fine now I even play sports now in beer leagues

While in rehab, make sure you work on both legs, not just your injured one. Its very common to injure your healthy leg right after as you may put too much strain on it through the process of healing. I actually ended up tearing my meniscus in my opposite knee right after getting fully recovered. Wasn't fun haha.

Surgery is next Thursday. Going with the hamstring tendon. Doctor said I won't be able to go to work for a solid week and I'll be in an aircast for 6 weeks. Not fun, but at least it's college football season.

Just bought all my braces and cooling units last week and calculated the out of pocket costs. ACL tears are expensive.

I feel your pain! I was playing in a men's league baseball game last June. Went to throw to first and heard the pop. I fell and when I stood back up it popped again, but I was able to limp off. After the inning was over my knee felt fine and I was first up at the plate. First pitch comes in and as soon as I planted with my front foot, piercing pain in my knee..couldn't move in either direction from the 45 degree it was stuck in.

Had my surgery done 2 days later by Dr. Andrews in Birmingham. Figured it was bad when he told me the ACL was shredded and meniscus had 2 tears and flipped over into the joint causing the lock up. Post surgery isn't bad, but you'll think those physical therapist bastards are trying to kill you! Keep at it and all will be well. I was back in a patrol car 7 months later albeit still gimpy. Speedy recovery to ya dude

Wanted to bump this up to provide some words of wisdom. Whenever you have a serious surgery, do you diligence and research the appropriate billing codes that the healthcare provider is sending your insurance company.

As a refresher to my specific case, I had ACL and Meniscus repair with an autograft from my hamstring in the same knee. When billed to my insurance, the healthcare provider billed for an autograft removed from the opposite knee (a more expensive procedure) and billed for a "prosthetic implant" which I learned is code for an allograft from a cadaver.

All of this is incorrect. At best, it's gross negligence or, at worst, it's fraud. Either way, those errors alone could amount to ~$2000 out of pocket if I don't successfully dispute it.

Once again, do your diligence.

How did you get knowledgeable about ICD-9?

How did you get knowledgeable about ICD-9?

ICD-9 is a code to describe the disease or condition being treated. In my case, I had to become knowledgeable about CPT codes (which describe services performed to treat a specific condition).

To answer your question though, there is a CPT guidelines publication that is put out every few years. Additionally, there are plenty of third-party resources available that go over appropriate CPT codes for different arthroscopic procedures.

Completely blew out my left knee as a sophomore in HS (ACL, MCL, PCL, LCL, Patellar all torn). It's a shitty process but it's do-able. Good luck

You should ask if the doctors take vBucks.

Hope you have a speedy recovery, sucks that you're still having knee problems. My dad had 6 surgeries on the same hip to correct a poor hip replacement. He's just now getting back on his feet and returning to "normal."
