I've played off & on since the early 70's, but got completely addicted about 15 years ago. Just wondering if anyone else was an avid player.

I play, though I haven't studied seriously in the past 2 years, just have been doing puzzles and quick 5 min games online recently. I've played in 1-2 tournament, (its really expensive!), but never played to enough to get an accruate rating, plus I improved alot after my tournaments, so I have no idea what my rating is anymore.

Very cool. Online blitz games are addictive, aren't they? I've just about stopped playing regular tournaments due to time, but play a LOT of correspondence chess online.

LOL! Yeah, I'm more of a butt man too, but I've turned into a real chess nerd. More addictive than a heroin and crack-laced Marlboro served up by Adriana Lima. I've got all the software, a few hundred books, and study or play 10-15 hours/week. I need help. :)

One thing I got into is "Vote Chess" online. Basically there is a team of "X" amount of players on both sides and a discussion board on the next move (correspondence style: 1-3 days per move). I really enjoy it because I believe it helps me make decisions (and see continuations) when I am playing by myself. Its a great way to learn.

ha... I have read two books on chess... again the ones on chest outnumber the former greatly... ;)

I do play quite a bit but not against computers, just friends, family and co workers...

interesting subject, about 2 months ago i got really fascinated with Chess, and more so the idea of playing chess online. I'm not very good at all, still in the stages of learning how to play 'for real' not just playing a buddy that doesnt know how to play either. I find the strategies to be absolutely fascinating, especially when I can watch a video and the moves are explained.

Never played Vote Chess, but I get the concept. That sort of stuff is very good for improving your analysis skills.

where did you play online, Internet Chess Club? When you say 'expensive', is this on a per game basis, or this a subscription service?

That was about the "in-person" tournaments at a convention center or the like.

Online I play at chess.com for free

I haven't played any "in person" tournaments in almost 10 years due to a lack of time. I use to play a lot of online blitz at ICC, but it was just too addictive and was hurting my serious play. I play a lot of correspondence chess at Chessworld.net and have gotten hooked on that. CC makes you really work hard and analyze everything. Did wonders for my playing strength.

I've played quite a bit of chess and am a fair player for serious chess and a strong player for chess house type games. Read some books and strategies when I was a youngster so that gives a foundation---I got better going through all the fisher/ spasky chess games from their infamous 1970s match.

I used to be a regular player for speed chess on pogo---I always was a fast mover who liked to use geometry and instinct better then slow planning, an immediate gratification personality and chess often don't mesh well---but two minute and now one minute games play right into my wheelhouse---can't play that fast in real life you'd knock all the pieces all over but on the PC its very addictive.

I play very very fast but still can get 50 moves in and go from opening to end game before time runs out-----playing someone of equal skill at ultra speed chess can be very seductive and very engrossing.---

bottom line--I really love chess---

Back when I was in school I took chess as an elective class, yes we had that as an elective don't judge. I would routinely beat the Chess Club members and they would actually get extremely upset. It was an "easy" game to me. Most of the club members would try to do the "2 move" check mate on me. Which I would never fall for.

The chess club leader actually tried to get me to join but at the time I was "too cool" for that.

In short "I could have been somebody, I could have been a contender"

As a youngster I learned the rules and was aware of the goal of chess. I played a bit but never became enthralled.

When my son was about seven or eight I taught him the same rudiments that I knew. The fourth time we played he kicked my arse. He won the next three games. This was not a case of Dad "letting" his son win. I tried, I really did.

This was one of a number of clues that his brain and mine were wired differently. Where I saw a black and white field occupied by carved wood characters, he saw the mathematical and tactical possibilities and probabilities.

Once he beat me four times straight we stopped playing. I was humiliated and he was bored.

Sometimes the "English" part (at least in terms of clarity, typing skills and punctuation) are debatable. All gibberish is welcome.

As for Bogs, put Google Translate or a similar program in your bookmarks.

I seriously suck at chess. I like to play it occasionally, but I suck at it.

Let's see if this works. Edit: It does!

Here is a game I played recently, I thought I played well and had a cool mating technic at the end. My opponent didn't play well, but it was a quick game (5 min per side total). If you have any comments/ analysis I'd love to hear it!
