More military stupidity:

Why hold the doors open until you can see enemy fighters? If the answer is because they were hoping Finn would be alive then why open fire on the ship?

There were still Resistance transports inbound. They were trying to get all of their people inside before they locked the doors.

Hux tells Poe there will be no surrender or mercy for the base but doesn't just shoot him out of the air.

Did you watch the movie dawg? They literally addressed this in the film. Poe is too dope at flying. It's also a callback to A New Hope.

"The battle station is heavily shielded and carries a firepower greater than half the star fleet. Its defenses are designed around a direct large-scale assault. A small one-man fighter should be able to penetrate the outer defense... The Empire doesn't consider a small one-man fighter to be any threat, or they'd have a tighter defense."

(Don't tell me Hux should have known better. He was a child at the time of Jakku and only knows the story of the Rebellion from stories. The older captain, Captain Canady, was openly pissed at Hux for not scrambling the TIEs to deal with Poe fast enough.)

Why aren't transport ships already fueled up? If they are supposed to be emergency getaway vehicles shouldn't they be ready to go in case of...an emergency?

They're not emergency getaway vehicles. Escape pods are not the same thing as transport ships. These things are like the ship's tender that take you ashore from a cruise ship.

Also, until five seconds ago, travelling through hyperspace was supposed to be untraceable. They didn't need emergency escape vehicles because a hyperspace jump was supposed to be a get-out-of-jail-free card.

Another thing...

Why doesn't Luke just TELL everyone that he is stalling so they can get out??? If the point is to save your friends, it seems to me that you wouldn't want them sitting there for 5 minutes trying to figure out what the heck you were doing. Just bad writing again. Or wait is that a theme?

Seriously, did you watch the movie? This was arguably THE theme. A theme in three parts:

Part 1: Rey tries to recruit Hero of the Rebellion and Jedi Master (TM) Luke Skywalker to save the day. Luke says "what do you want me to do? Fly in with a laser sword and cut down the entire First Order?" Luke talks about the arrogance of the Jedi order and refuses to acknowledge that he's a hero.

Part 2: Luke realizes that sometimes the galaxy needs a hero. He is the spark that lights the fire that will burn the First Order to the ground. So he gives the Resistance (and the audience) what they want. A prime-age Luke Skywalker wielding his laser sword against the First Order.

Part 3: The kid at the end (Oniho Zaya, broom kid's black friend) is seen telling the legend of the hero Luke Skywalker and his magic laser sword. Heroes inspire the next generation.

Instead, have Luke say "find a way out of here" and you actually shorten the movie and clean up the writing.

I thought she was a traitor initially. The whole movie kept me off balance. I had bought into the whole grey jedi narrative and the movie totally threw me for a loop.

Yeah, I intentionally stayed as far away from rumors as I could ahead of seeing it so I had no idea what to expect... and I completely agree that the best part of the movie -- by far -- is that you could not anticipate everything that was going to happen. There were so many different ways that various arcs and scenes could've gone... I really thought they were going to kill Finn at the end. I really did.

There were risks/stakes for pretty much every character but Rey. She was the only character where you could be 100% confident she had plot armor and would survive the movie.

It was a character moment for Poe. His instinct is to fight back and blow shit up. "Start the mission, finish the mission." This was him realizing that if you're going to be a leader, sometimes you need to know when it's time to retreat.

He realizes that Luke is stalling, but not that its fake-Luke.

He's right, there's a quote. It zooms in on Poe's face and he says something like "he's doing this for a reason." And then they start looking around for the vulptex.

If you guys don't care about bad writing, that's fine. I don't care about bad writing when I watch a horror flick or Taken or whatever that I am watching purely to get my heart racing. I hold.Star Wars to a higher standard. ESB is a top 10ish movie on IMDB. I care about it's integrity. I don't think making Luke look stupid for wasting precious time is a good thing.

And wiz you are right about not shooting Poe down, I'll give you that. And yes they aren't escape pods but it still seemed like a waste of time to me. I have no idea what you are talking about with my Luke thing. His character arc has nothing to do with the bad writing in that scene.

It's a Superman thing. The symbol is more powerful than the man.

Luke was giving the Resistance (and the galaxy) and image of a magic man with a laser sword standing on his own in the face of evil. It's meant to inspire. Luke grew up idolizing the Jedi knights who fought in the Clone Wars. Without them, he may have never agreed to follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade.

The Resistance and the galaxy at large have no idea that it wasn't REALLY Luke down there staring down Kylo and the AT-M6s, that's my point. Only Leia knows that.

I guess I am failing to see the importance relative to the cinematic impact of people seeing Legend Luke walk in and Luke and Leia's re-uniting on-screen moment which IMO overshadows anything else going on.... that moment could have lasted 10 minutes and I would never care about what the rest of the people were doing.

Re ESB... ESB is a great movie.!!!! However none of the other SW movies are great nor even exceptionally or well done from a critical standpoint. They are littered with bad dialogue, bad directing, bad sequencing balanced out with awesome action and awesome CGI. IMO Rogue One and ANH are close but still heavily flawed movies.

The worst part is that, in the novelization and the visual guide, Cassian Andor is revealed to have been a Separatist during the Clone Wars. He's not fighting to restore the Republic, he's a borderline anarchist. THAT'S some interesting character shit to explore that they just decided to skip.
