Agreed. It’s firmly in the top 3, with ESB and ANH. And the score, especially during the climb in the data tower on Scariff.... goosebumps
The score was done in literally one month after the original composer dropped out. It's universally panned as the worst Star Wars score and it's not particularly close.

Hey so what was up with the cave on the island?
What was up with the cave on Dagobah?

"Dear child. I see your eyes. You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku, they're never coming back. But... there's someone who still could. The belonging you seek is not behind you. It is ahead. I am no Jedi, but I know the Force. It moves through and surrounds every living thing. Close your eyes. Feel it."

What was up with the cave on Dagobah?

I think it was a little deeper than just the parallel to internal struggle and looking for answers.

The cave on Jedi Island seemed to be a direct link to the dark side... Rey being able to challenge it, explore it, search for answers, and still not be pulled over was a huge moment, moreso than Luke confronting a vision of Vader IMO.

On dagobah, it’s a very important moment of growth for Luke. He sees where a certain behavior could lead, for better or worse. We see Yoda is disappointed because it took aggressive behaviors to learn that lesson. It’s a major moment.

The ach to cave is irrelevant. Rey literally narrates that she came looking for answers and got nothing out of it. Thanks for wasting my time.

You think the fact that she went into a physical manifestation of the dark side, and came out unharmed or unturned (so far as we know), is irrelevant?

And it's also irrelevant that she learns that she has no potentially-conflicting predisposition to interactions with the Force?

You are stretching to disregard parts of the movie now lol. I know you didn't like it, but dismissing her trip to the cave (and the potential implications of *nothing* happening to her) is a reach.

Yes

Don’t know where that comes from. I didn’t get that at all from the scene. I think you are adding content where you want to see it.

Ok. The fact is she actually says onscreen that she got nothing out of it.

Oh, and, somehow, she’s a great swimmer, Despite growing up on a desert planet that she only left a few days ago.

She learned she has no familial connection to the Force, aka she has no built-in conflicting nature like the Skywalkers do.

If we find out that was a lie, then the story will probably unfold in that she DOES have some type of conflict that is a major part of Episode IX.

But for now, it appears that the Cave scene was effective in showing her resistance to either "Extreme" side of the Force, which is significant IMO.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!

I love it how there are all these "conspiracy theory" articles about the fan backlash, but they aren't conspiracy theories because nobody thinks their team does conspiracy.

I remember very clearly that all the major media was pointing out the weird racial stereotypes in Episode 1 as one of the many, many issues with the film. Were they right? Yes! A little of that stuff is almost inevitable, but it was glaring, so Lucas kept most of that stuff out of the next two prequels.

Here the political nonsense (which was, again, only one of the many, many issues with the film) was PC, so it must be good in every way! It must enhance the plot!

Anyway. The entire reason SW makes a billion dollars every time they turn the camera on is because of passionate, invested fans. It's different than most films or even series, and can only be compared to a few, like Harry Potter. So you shouldn't be surprised when that same passion that makes you billions, also gets you a ton of backlash when insulted. I know they have a new broader audience in mind, but they could have been a little more respectful of the history of the series in the transition. It would have motivated the old farts like me to buy more merchandise for their wee ones.

Mark Hamill, democrat and Trump hater, even agrees that this is not his Luke Skywalker! It's not politics! https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/mark-hamill-last-jedi-luke-skywalker_us_5a3cf644e4b025f99e16864d

Maybe ease up on the rhetoric there, guy.

Regarding things like her swimming, its just another example off sloppy story telling. They lean hard on her upbringing to explain a ton about her abilities and demeanor, but don't worry about it at other times.

RJ, for whatever reason, wants to act like he was making some stand-alone movie that should be appreciated for its broad narrative themes and storytelling- details like this are superfluous (sometimes...). He can't have it both ways. He should have known what he was signing up for. This is Star Wars. It's fun to have to keep track of all those strings, and goodness knows Disney can afford to hire some nerd technical advisors. About that SW Encyclopedia that I was about to buy... not so much anymore.

Hamill gets it, good find.

They are acting like this is Jurassic Park or something, and as long as there are dinosaurs you can do whatever you want. What these people (Disney people and Johnson) don’t understand is that the fan base is invested emotionally in these people. They are people we know and love. Johnson is having a good time with this movie, it’s masterbation for him, you can tell, but he doesn’t get what the story means to people, he’s arrogantly disconnected. When you see stories where he says, I didn’t worry about what fans might think, well, sorry guy, you have a real problem on your hands.

Exactly. Well said, if gross.

This is going to hit their bottom-line. I know my kids are in to SW, in large part, because it's something we do together--like football without me throwing remote controls. If dad isn't interested anymore, it will become just one more item on the menu. Some will like it, but it will lose some magic and that makes you less enthusiastic to spend on it.

People are still crying about this? How long is this going to last?

As soon as they realize Rian Johnson isn’t the reason Luke was hiding out in the middle of the galactic boonies like the cotton-headed ninny muggins he generally is.

Saw it last night, just read through this entire thread. Posting this on my phone.

Bad:
1. Leia should be dead. The Mary Poppins scene was an all time low moment in the franchise and it wasn't even necessary. If she died there the movie could have remained essentially the same.
2. Disney is afraid to kill off protagonists. Finn should have died as well. Would have been a satisfying exit for him.
3. Rey remains a Mary Sue. Over the course of two films we have seen her: A) pilot the MF better than Han Solo ever did; B) gun down Tie Fighters like it was child's play; C) show all time light saber abilities despite having no training; and D) display an insane amount of technical knowledge. Seriously, what are her character flaws? She has none. Also, did Luke give her swimming lessons too?
4. Laura Dern is a WTF level of horrible character. Hey, why don't you just TELL Poe what your plans are instead of enabling a mutiny?
5. Don't even get me started on Rose... she's the new Jar Jar.
6. The Luke / Kylo backstory doesn't make sense given OT. This is a man that saw the good in Darth Vader. He wouldn't kill his nephew because he senses the Dark Side.

Good:
1. Kylo is a GREAT villain. If there's one bright spot in the new trilogy it's Disney's excellent portrayal of a internally conflicted, self-doubting villain.
2. Throne battle scene was great cinematically.
3. Wiz should quit ESPN Finance and just run PR for the Star Wars franchise.
