..........Same with Rey. She at least seems to have inherent Force ability but even then, so much of being capable with a lightsaber is training.......

she carries a staff with her for pretty much the entire movie, also when Finn first sees her on Jakku she is showing that she can handle herself when those 'criminals' are trying to take BB-8 from her....she already had fighting skills; proficient with a staff weapon that is similar to fighting with a lightsaber. That, combined with her newly discovered force abilities is why Kylo Ren does not overpower her in that scene.

Why do people like Poe so much? They didn't even really develop him. He's not present for most the damn movie.

by your comments in this thread, its quite clear you didnt like the movie at all.

Agreed. Plus he wasn't trying to kill her. Snoke told him to bring her to him. He probably could have force frozen her and chopped her head off if he really wanted.

He's looking for nits to pick.

This movie did what was necessary by not screwing things up. It was a good movie and set the rest of the trilogy/series up.

Thought it was fantastic. I don't mind the 2.0 criticism. It is a sucessful story obviously and it needed to be just as much for the new generation of fans like my kids as it does for the adults. The scale of everything dwarfed any thing from the originals though. That leads me to think there should be something much more larger coming up in the story.

They said it was gonna be old but new through much of the production. They also said it was a family driven story line so I look for Rey to be related to the Solo's or Luke. I am wondering if they make Rey a Solo like the EU since Kylo is a Solo.

Kylo Ren's name was Ben... did I hear that right?

My one criticism would probably be the cantina scene. Nothing about that felt like it belonged. The scene from the junker is typical JJ. He will push a story along with action. Expect more of that.

All of all my whole family loved it. The battle scenes looked fantastic. The Resistance fighters approaching off from the distance over the water gave me chills.

My wife was heartbroken about Han but they needed to make Kylo despicable and they achieved that in my mind. I honestly thought that he would go with Han but looking back he was actually struggling with killing Han, not leaving the dark. Great fucking scene.

After my emotional high I have to give it a solid A-

I was more than happy with this movie. Took my wife and kids to see it with me. My 10 year old loved it and my 15 year old who said he doesn't like Star Wars is becoming a fan.
Now my wife who has stated multiple times that she doesn't like Star Wars and has no interest in the movie thought it was a good movie.
So for what they wanted in locking in new fans they were able to do that.
My self I got definite chills when Rey found Luke.
Losing Han was so rough, but you can tell Poe is being setup as a Han type of replacement.
After the prequels I'm excited with what's capable now and I'm hoping that they keep expanding on what so far seems to be an excellent addition to the universe.

Kylo Ren sucked ass. I didn't buy him as a Dark Side force-user nor as Han Solo's son. That's my main criticism.

I'm shocked that people are complaining that the tone wasn't serious or heavy enough. I thought the film was MUCH stronger when it was Finn and Poe or Finn and Rey romping around Jakku. Not every Star Wars film has to be the agents of good battling the the agents of evil for the fate of the entire galaxy. I think they'd be much more successful telling smaller stories set in that same universe.

Jakku was the highlight of the movie for sure.

Disagree that Kylo Ren sucked. He's playing a spoiled kid who wants to be Vader and nailed it.

Would anyone else find it to perfect if Ben ended up being a huge mammas boy and repented by the end of this trilogy?
For some reason he strikes me as a big time mammas boy and it is Disney owned now.

He's a damn fine actor for sure. I just don't like the angle of "spoiled kid" in the Dragon role.

I work for TWDC, I'm well aware. But I think that type of story could also work in the main series.

I don't know... he did a lot of hardcore evil.

I loved it, thought the acting and direction were great, and the portrayal of the force more in line withy the new hope. Rey was instinctual, had been using the force on machinery for years, and now had "faith" because of her experience with Kulo Ren and Han Solo as well as desperation. She would have gotten her head cut off in seconds against Darth Maul or Anakin, but due to his inner conflict, Ren is a mess. Letting the Force guide you is good enough against him, and she is obviously VERY powerful.

I also thought that all the rehashing of original themes and plot points was a good way to reboot the franchise. The idea that you would stop trying to build Death Stars is like the idea the soviets or Iran would stop trying to build a nuke just because the US or Israel stopped it before.

And SW is all about jokes in all but the most serious moments. Han's "I know," line or "that bad, huh," or "Bobba Fett, where?" Lines are few examples.

The movie should be mind-blowing for an 8 year old boy, and entertaining and thought-provoking for adults. 25 yos need to stop demanding every children's franchise get revamped for them.

3.5 out of 5

I did enjoy it quite a bit.
I think my biggest criticism is Carrie Fisher's plastic face and mumbled lines. She has truly become more machine now than man.

It did feel a bit "dumbed down" and was extremely predictable , but I expected nothing less from Mickey Mouse.

The Kylo Ren character has potential, but definitely needed more development.

Don't get me started on the nonstop jokes...a few would have been OK, but it just never ended!
I wasn't sure if it was Space Balls or Star Wars for the first hour.

As an OG fan...The Thrawn Trilogy will always be canon for me. Lucas should have made them in the 90s instead of giving in to the dark side and making those terrible prequels and selling out to the real world Evil Empire.

Nonstop jokes? Go back and watch the original films. They were LOADED with jokes, usually from C-3PO and R2-D2. The difference is, these were funnier. Y'all are acting like they went full Guardians of the Galaxy.

The prequels weren't bad because they were prequels. They were bad because George Lucas has no clue what he's doing. If he had made Thrawn, Thrawn would have sucked. Disney has done better with one film of Star Wars than anything George Lucas has done with it in 30 years. Disney is crushing the superhero genre with the MCU and they've been excellent stewards of Star Wars thus far.

I think Lucas knew exactly what he was doing: selling toys.

No, I enjoyed myself; it just isn't what I went in looking for. And I just want to know what people saw that I didn't. Some people keep saying they love things that I have criticized and I just want to try and see what they saw.

I'm seeing again on Christmas, but that time I'm going in sober and without a full bladder. I'm hoping my experience is enhanced due to this, and maybe if I know to look for what people are saying they loved about this film, my perception will change.

I don't get it either, but people love Wedge Antilles and Boba Fett, and they have way less screen time than Poe.

This is true, but they don't play the role of main characters.

Poe walks the line between supporting and main.

So again, why do people like Poe so much?

I just liked his personality a lot. I saw him as more of a Han Solo than Finn. Smart, witty, talented....I can't really compare Finn to anyone in the prequels.

I figured that must be why people like him, but I just don't recall seeing enough of him to like him like I like Han.

I think the Expanded Universe had quite a bit to do with both of their characters being as popular as they are...more so Wedge than Fett though. At least initially.

My love of fighter planes and naval combat, tied in with his extensive use in the EU, is why Wedge is my favorite Star Wars character. It's like WW2 naval combat in space, which was intentional.

I think Rey is my favorite new character. She's the first light side Jedi that's neither experienced Master (Yoda, Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon) nor whiny little bitch (Luke, Anakin). I really hope she's not part of the Skywalker bloodline.

They are trying like hell to make everyone think that she is. Hopefully it's just smoke, because TFA was beyond predictable. She was my favorite character in VII as well.

Im hoping she's Kenobi's granddaughter. Ewan McGregors voice was used during that Rey flashback.
