I'm completely confused on why we have a Michigan State thread. I have no animosity towards the Spartans. Nor are they a particularly relevant team to ND... we don't play them, seldom recruit against them, they aren't battling us for a playoff spot (yet), and they're a stable program with little drama.

Soooo...?

We have only played Michigan 41 times , rarely ever recruit against them in big time battles and will never play against them again. but we talk about them daily.

We have played MSU 76 times and will play against them again one day and never talk about them. So I feel MSU deserves there own thread to discuss all things MSU.

Yeah, I know they're a historic rival. I don't get the thread title. Makes us all look small with a silly moniker for a team there is no reason to hate on.

New EL resident here. I think Sparty is the real deal. The Nebraska 4th Q was a real fluke. They have a vicious swarming defense and a moderately decent to good QB. They would be in my group of 4 right now. (That's not an endorsement of the B1G, which I think is mostly the MAC with money. I just think Sparty is head and shoulders above the rest of the conference right now.)

.... and the conference is relishing in this. MSU is MSU. They'll lose when It matters most

That seems reasonable. Only issue is the 2005 thing but that was before my time.

Agreed. It's something the mouth breathers on the Stanford forums would do. Don't care for it.

But the Michigan thread is? Going on 79 pages.... Confused on the difference?

My issue is with the use of "Sharty." I have no problem with the existence of the thread; quite the opposite, actually.

Had good parties with MSU fans...scUM Walverine arrogant facks look down on everyone with little or no justification

EDIT...Spartans fans I know generally respect ND...can hardly find a respectful UM fan

Michigan has a deep history of hatred that evokes a meaningful level of schadenfreude among us. MSU isn't the same way. They're a stable, quality team that isn't very much hated by many in our fan base. If I lived in AA, I might have a problem with people. In East Lansing, I am fine. People leave me alone with an ND shirt. That's the difference.

I think they'd be clutch in a rematch against Oregon. I'd put them in over FSU, Baylor, and Ole Miss. Still waiting on data for ND. I think the Oregon thing was mostly because they were a young team on the road that messed up in the fourth. Oregon has a tendency to score a lot quickly. That point spread wasn't indicative of what was actually a very close game.

I should add that I really don't care about the Spartans. I've just had the opportunity to watch them a lot so far and I think they're a lot more impressive than people are giving them credit for.

I hope we beat FSU in a close 19 point game.

I just went because the other thread is called "Skunk Bears"

No, I get it. I would say there's a difference between skunkbear (an actual nickname for the wolverine) and gross toilet humor, though. But maybe I'm just being a prude (wouldn't be the first time).

How can you have them over Ole Miss??? I'm sorry if I'm coming off harsh but that makes absolutely no sense (and I hate the SEC so it makes me sick that I'm defending them). They have wins over Alabama and Texas A&M. Michigan St LOST a game already and their best win is against.....Nebraska (and they almost blew that one). The rest of their schedule has been absolutely pathetic.

Sooooo...2 quality wins for Ole Miss and zero losses, vs. one decent win for Mich St and a loss.

Then you have FSU, with no losses, and 2 wins vs ranked opponents (one without their Heisman winner), and you have them behind a one-loss Mich St team?

I could go on, but I won't because it's obviously futile. Even my MSU friends don't have them anywhere near as high as you do. Having a hard time wrapping my head around your argument...

MSU is good.....but I think they are WAAAY overrated. Besides the Ducks, who have they played??? They have a soft big ten schedule and that's saying something. Don't think they are a playoff team.

On a personal note....I work with alot of spartan alumni (good people) and it never gets old reminding them how fortunate they are not to be playing us this year....ohh yeah and that whole keeping them outta the national championship thing last year :) hahahaha!!!!

They haven't played anybody besides the Ducks, and they aren't going to. The B1G is a wasteland. I'm just going by my opinion of their play in those games and not by their statistical resume. I know, I know, I ought to be ashamed of myself...that's the SEC calling card (the "eye test"). There's not a logical argument to be made there, and I'm not going to dig my heels into the sand and yell until I convince everyone, because I know that's pointless and that wouldn't make me any better than an ESPN analyst.

Interesting note-- I heard on the radio this morning that, as of today, michigan state was the general public betting favorite to win the natty. That is obviously a fluid point from week to week, but kind of crazy nonetheless.

I guess it's even crazier because while they were the betting favorite today, many believe they won't even make the playoff in the first place (even assuming they win out...and are tied with other 1-loss teams).

Yah I didn't understand that myself. My guess is an easier road the rest of the way. For instance, beat OSU and BIG10 championship against Iowa or some other ass clownery and they are in the mix.

There are a number of you seeing opportunism in pulling for Michigan in this weekend's contest in East Lansing. I find this appalling, but to each their own. Since it is a bye week and there is not much fresh news coming out of South Bend, I suggest reading about the history between the two schools. The anti-Catholic hijinks of Fielding Yost and Fritz Crisler are well known around here. Michigan's history of undermining its competition goes back another half-century, however. After their failure to smother the state's fledgling agricultural college in the cradle, the University of Michigan spent the next century attempting to subvert its growth.

HATE WEEK- Hate: a Michigan State-Michigan History - The Only Colors

The University of Michigan, tried, for a long time, to wrap its hands around the neck of our university at nearly every turn, displaying the type of arrogance, elitism, and anti-competitive policies of subterfuge and sabotage that has made the university reviled throughout all of the Big Ten.

Now that is a teaser! Anyway, if you were feeling guilty about supporting the Wolverines this weekend, read the entire article. The potential for a short term gain for our team does not outweigh the importance of the continued decline of Michigan football, in my opinion. They are overdue a long period of reckoning. May the Spartans continue to drive their heel into the neck of Ann Arbor.

P.S. Did you know that the original name of the University of Michigan was the Catholepistemiad? Seriously. What a comical neologism to express the elitism whence it came.

Doing a little research on recruiting and if the staff in East Lansing isn't elite at developing talent I don't know who is...

Since Dantonio has taken over:

Avg. Recruiting Class (247): 31
Top 25 finishes (AP): 5
Top 10 Finishes (AP): 2

Compare this to Notre Dame in the same time frame...

Avg. Recruiting Class (247): 11
Top 25 Finishes (AP): 2
Top 10 Finishes (AP): 1

That's a problem folks.
