MSU definitely has some major potential in the NIL space IMO. Major alums like Gilbert, Gores, Magic Johnson, just to name a few. They seem like a sleeping giant to me once they get the right guy in there and get this thing going again. But it all starts with the HC.
Yeah, half the NBA is owned by MSU alums, with Mat Ishbia being the most relevant. Problem is, the NBA seems to think owners supporting university athletics, even in a different sport, is some kind of conflict of interest.

The issue with NIL and football is that the alumni will also be basketball first. They need to hire someone that can win and inspire alumni again. Basically they need to find their Freeman. I dont think Smith loses his job after this year but 2-3 Bullough will be a name shouted around. That name carries weight in East Lansing.

Michigan directly cheats to win games, slap on the wrist.
Michigan State gives some extra off the field benefits to a few players, forfeit all their games.
Maybe they just didn't volunteer to pay the "financial equivalent" of their penalty like Michigan.

NCAA, in a weird mix of Italian and midwestern accents: "Those are some nice wins you've got there, it would be a shame if something happened to them..."

I’m pretty sure the old coach was suing MSU since they fired him for cause. This penalty helps them against his lawsuit. So, in the end, I’d guess that MSU is pretty happy with this outcome.
