We'll just have to see how Kelly reacts to a top tier coach being hired in his back yard. No, ND doesn't have to play Michigan but they will compete for anywhere from 6-15 recruits a year. If I'm a recruit trying to decide between the two (with no bias) why wouldn't you choose Michigan. NFL proven head coach, quality education if you want one, weather is a wash vs. Kelly might leave and the overall direction of the program is on a downward trend.

FIFY. We have held our own against Urban, but he has obviously had a lot more success.

This makes it even more crowded in the Midwest, and we're gonna have to turn the heat up from recruiting, to S&C, to coaching.

This will make everyone better.

So Fleener was the only regular starter on that offense who was drafted in the first two rounds.

So anyone not drafted in the first two rounds is mediocre? Is that your contention? Look dude, if a guy makes it to the NFL, he is not "just mediocre" in college. He may have mediocre years, where coaches haven't figured out how to best fit him into the offense or where he is playing through nagging injuries, but if he has the talent to make it into the NFL, he is not "truly mediocre". That was all I was saying.

Michigan will become a power house again. This is bad, real bad

This. Sherm, I don't understand why some posters are excited about this. Michigan is a loathesome institution that has treated ND poorly for years. We should have no respect for that Godless place, nor should there be any excitement about the hire. Nothing good comes about for ND by having a competent um program. I sincerely hope Harbaugh goes nuts there and that his contract financially ruins their athletic department.

A Michigan man is a coward who reveres racists and bigots. There is nothing commendable about that. Nothing.

I like you guys but many of you need to get your heads out of the sand. This is a net negative for ND. Who cares if it restores balance to the B1G? ND needs a weak Michigan to have the best chance at becoming a true force in the Midwest and beyond. The less competition for that title, the better.

Or worse. If Kelly were to jump ship to the NFL, ND doesn't have a Harbaugh to bring into the fold. Now there's one less coach to fill an NFL vacancy. Even if Kelly does stay - it seems like he's not as "hungry" as he was when he was first hired. Look at his first full season recruiting or 2012. Now look at the last two seasons. He's going to spend another class filling roster spots with throw ins because he and his staff are outworked on the recruiting trail.

Jay Glazer saying hold on with Harbaugh to Michigan. Oakland in strong position. Nobody more connected then Jay.

How about our staff keep recruiting the country line they are and actually start developing the kids they get that's our problem. Its time for us as fans and these coached to quit making excuses.

It's good for the MW, good for the Big10, bad for ND.

That said, academic requirements are a far bigger barrier than Jim ever could be. We need to do a better job developing what we have, and perhaps a tweak or two to the systems could attract more skilled personnel.

Don't discount Harbaugh using Michigan as leverage trying to get Oakland to pony up.

I'll be interested in how ND reacts in terms of recruiting if Harbaugh does indeed end up at scUM.

Will BK ratchet up his personal recruiting earlier in cycles to meet another big player in Midwest recruiting, or does he stay the course and let the staff handle the majority of the cycle until the end still?

@BruceFeldmanCFB: Jim Harbaugh's family is flying to Ann Arbor Monday, source tells @FoxSports. Harbaugh will be #Wolverines new head coach.

@BruceFeldmanCFB: Plan is for Jim Harbaugh to be at #Michigan home basketball game Tuesday vs Illinois.

This is what Glazer said.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
With @johnubacon & @brucefeldmancfb saying it's done those guys are as solid as it comes w info

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
And my other point, even if he's done deal to Michigan doesn't mean a team like OAK gives up til THEY are told he's out.

John Clayton (the best NFL reporter at ESPN imo) said just an hr ago on ESPN Radio that it's 100%, done deal. That Harbaugh has reached out to NFL coaches about joining his new staff at Michigan.

Bruce Feldman is reporting it's done as well.

Dave Feldman, former ESPN reporter and current CSN Bay Area sports anchor, who went to high school with Jim Harbaugh and is a close friend, tweeted this last night

Dave Feldman @FeldyCSN
Confirmed: Harbaugh to Michigan! Press Conference Tues in Ann Arbor

Lines up with the "insider" chatter from UM Scout (Sam Webb) and UM Rivals site. A Rivals "insider" poster said that a plane had been sent out to Cali to pick Jim and his wife up and that the band had been called back for a special event on Tuesday and that caterers had been hired. He dropped those nuggets a couple days ago. Another insider has said a walk-away agreement had already been signed between JH and 49ers.

I'll be beyond shocked if this isn't 100% official by tomorrow. Way too much smoke.

I think the guy has a huge ego, but I doubt this. He worships at the alter of Schembechler. I think if he had no interest in Michigan he would've said he's turning the job down. Just my two pennies.

Come on, Oakland! Oakland would make a lot of sense for him since he would stay in the Bay Area.

Agreed!

It would be awesome if Oakland snags him away.

Oh, Michigan tears would be delicious.

The most frustrating thing about all this is that ND literally has no alumni remotely close to Harbaugh's prestige that recruits would get excited for if/when Kelly leaves. Let's hope Tom Clements gets a head coaching job in the NFL soon.

Apparently Celements has "no personality" and that's why he gets continually passed over. This was the dismissive response I got to my "what about Clements..." musings to people who would know.

I seriously doubt the kid would come to Michigan, even with Harbaugh.

With Peppers redshirting this season though, they could be quite the frosh tandem at CB in 2015. Yikes.

Another thing... the only thing stopping ND from hiring a Grade A coach is money. Pony up $8mil/year and you can get virtually whoever you want (with obvious exceptions). But we're not willing to do that.

We have a near $10billion dollar endowment and the second most valuable team but the administration is not willing to go financially "all in" and probably never will be. It's sad. We'll instead always be stuck gambling on somebody like Whittingham or whoever that we can snag for around #3mil/season.

I'm hoping that this Harbaugh to Michigan is actually a good thing in that it'll give the administration a wakeup call. If Chip Kelly misses the playoffs next year.......... #justsayin

We're stuck with Brian Kelly and when he leaves were gonna be so screwed. Ugh.

Disagree. Well, unless he leaves this year. If he leaves after next year we'll be in fine shape. If he leaves this year, our only realistic late game options are Whittingham and Mullen. There's a reason Mullen hasn't signed his contract extension yet, and that's that he's waiting to see what happens with the NFL firings.

honestly, don't even care about the recruiting.

What Harbaugh brings is toughness and player development. Two things sorely lacking at Michigan under Rodriguez and Hoke. Harbaugh takes losers and turns them into winners. He's done it everywhere he's been. He breaks players down and builds them back up. He can take his and beat yours or he can take yours and beat his. The guy is just a hell of a coach.

If he can recruit top level talent, that'll only be a plus. Hoke recruited top 5-10 classes on paper and that didn't amount to shit.

Harbaugh at Standford had Andrew Luck and the good fortune to have almost no injuries during his years there. In addition, the administration had the good judgement to leave him alone. He did recruit well but not great while there.
I am not sure how a good a college coach he will be at Michigan.

Agree with everything you say. But eventually Jim will wear out his welcome in 5 years or so.

I am not sure how a good a college coach he will be at Michigan.

1) It's almost impossible to recruit great at Stanford. Most of the top recruits just cannot get admitted. He had Stanford in the top 25 of recruiting rag rankings. That in itself is an accomplishment.

2) Jim Hackett is said to be staying on as AD for 2-3 years and will allow Harbaugh to help pick the next AD.

3) I think if history is any prior indication, he will do OK at Michigan.
