Yup. What I think too but the mutual separation leads me to believe that he told the 49ers he will take the UM job. Oakland could still swoope in at the last minute.

I think that is very interesting... Granted outright release?

highly doubt he was granted an outright release.

an "insider" on the UM Rivals board posted 5-6 days ago that a walk-away agreement was in place and signed. Jim and 49ers would part ways, he wouldn't re-sign and they wouldn't fire him. Part of that walk-away agreement this "insider" posted about contained a clause about Jim's NFL rights, and the guy said that 49ers would still be owed compensation if Jim went to the NFL.

Also what I'd read/heard.

I would not be shocked. In fact, I'm relatively certain he and Mora are on their short list and they're going to try to get a college coach again.

I do believe Harbaugh either has no media skills in defeat or he has so much ego it pours on to the living room floor. We got us a challenge up north with recruiting.

yeah...Jed York is a tool for sure but a complete idiot he's not.

No way he'd let Harbaugh just walk across the bay to the Raiders for nothing. Nope.

I don't think the Raiders are an attractive job to Harbaugh for many reasons. One is they probably won't even be in California after 2015, very good chance they are in San Antonio. Mark Davis also kept Reggie McKenzie on as GM, which reportedly is not something Harbaugh was thrilled about, and lastly the Raiders suck ass. They need every draft pick they have to improve. The pound of flesh the 49ers were asking for in terms of draft picks would make that rebuild job stupid hard. Ontop of that the Raiders would have to pay him probably around $10.5 million a year for that to be equal to the $8 mil or so a year from Michigan when you consider the difference in state income and property tax rates.

Kelly comes across as a control freak to me. I don't think he'd be a great fit there after what the front office went through with Harbaugh.

But if Kelly did leave, Kyle Wittingham would be a hell of a hire for ND. I think he's a better coach than Kelly to be honest.

One more time Harbough to Michigan sucks for Notre Dame. Again Harbough will where his welcome out around the 5 year mark, but by then Michigan will be a national power. Fml

And Dan Mullen hasn't signed an extension for a reason at MSU. He's keeping his options squarely open. Whittingham is your cheap option (so what ND would likely pursue) and Mullen is your "shell out a lot of money for the hot coach" option.

Mullen is a scumbag. The guy is pure sleaze. I don't think ND would even entertain that thought.

Wittingham is a more proven commodity imo, he's been at it longer. Mullen has had one really good season, that's it. And it's just as hard to win at Utah with very limited resources as it as at Mississippi State. OK. Maybe a little easier than Mississippi State, but it's still hard. Very limited resources and a very cheap AD, hard to get good assistants and keep them around. Wittingham is pissed about it. His assistant coaches have been dropping like flies to other schools because Utah AD is too cheap to pay his assistants.

Which is why he would never come to ND...

But the shouldn't be. Stanford has been getting solid players for the past several years (kids ND should be all over). High level 4 and 5 star players. Why can't we get those kids that commit to Stanford, and any that are committed to places like UVA, Vandy, Duke, etc?

along with the below, we've out-recruited them, beat them, but still IMO we have not developed as well, nor have we won a big bowl yet.

Just a couple of wildass guesses:

Because they want to stay local.

Because they want to play in warmer weather.

Because they don't want parietals.

Because they don't want a religious school structure.

Because they don't love the smell of ethanol in the morning.

Add Res Life, Honor Code, du Lac, etc, etc,

Maybe a little, but I think it's more that a less appealing "football" school has connected with, and developed players better than ND. Personality and scheme to an extent.

Since Brian Kelly has been at ND, he has outrecruited Stanford. Kelly has signed 61 four star guys, to Stanford's 39. Kelly has also signed 8 five star guys to Stanford's 3.

Yet, They still have won more games.

My comment was strictly a response to the assertion that we have been losing a bunch of 4 and 5 star guys to programs like Stanford. That's obviously not true, based on the actual numbers. I wasn't trying to draw any other conclusions.

I mean... sorta? In the last 3 seasons... i.e. Shaw's guys versus Kelly's for the most part... ND is 2-1 against Stanford, and 28-10 overall. Stanford is 30-10. Shrug.

I don't see how anyone looks at the current roster at Stanford and would trade ND's for it. They're deeper on defense but not better when you look at projected starters, and they're much worse across the board on offense.

I think we can all agree since JH left, the Tree has been trailing down from a results perspective.

I'm looking at BCS wins man. ND hasn't won a Major Bowl game since 1994 or some shit.

yep

Another thing... the only thing stopping ND from hiring a Grade A coach is money. Pony up $8mil/year and you can get virtually whoever you want (with obvious exceptions). But we're not willing to do that.

We have a near $10billion dollar endowment and the second most valuable team but the administration is not willing to go financially "all in" and probably never will be. It's sad. We'll instead always be stuck gambling on somebody like Whittingham or whoever that we can snag for around #3mil/season.

I'm hoping that this Harbaugh to Michigan is actually a good thing in that it'll give the administration a wakeup call. If Chip Kelly misses the playoffs next year.......... #justsayin

I hate cheap.

IMO we could have Gruden if we wanted to pay. Hell I'd take Rex Ryan.

Rex Ryan would kill it in college provided he could recruit. I have no idea if he could, but the guy definitely has the resume to sell and the over the top personality to match the resume. My guess is he'd recruit very well...that's purely a guess though. Don't think he's ever coached in college.

In the NFL, bottom line is that you're royally screwed if you don't have a QB. Rex never had a QB. Mark Sanchez and then Geno Smith? Yuck. College game is so different, and the QB isn't the end all be all like it is in the NFL. Alabama & LSU have been wildly successful with mostly garbage at QB. Strong defenses and strong run game.

The man is a borderline defensive genius. He could build a swarming defense and on offense just get a running game going and get a QB to game manage and he'd be golden.

Gruden has been offered TONS of cash to coach both pro and college. And he's passed up every single job he's been 'interested' in bc his current job pays extremely well and he doesn't have 1/8th of the anxiety/pressure/angst, etc.

If he wanted to coach he'd be coaching by now. But he doesn't. It's Irish arrogance when fans say he'd come be the next ND coach if we did certain things. Tennessee fans say the same thing LOL...

the "insider" over at the UM Rivals board who gave the heads up on the walk-away agreement being in place 5-6 days ago said the Harbaugh to UM contract has officially been signed, done deal.

crazy to me how these "insiders" on college message boards and people like Sam Webb and John U Bacon were all over this thing while the national media and NFL reporters just laughed it off.

While Gruden’s career as a broadcaster has been successful, he doesn’t deny that he would like to coach again.

“I haven’t lost a game in 3½ years,” he said. “But no, I would like to give coaching one more try.”

I do believe he will coach again... might be in 5 or 10 years, but I'd bet it will happen.

No way Baalke and York go the college route again, not this fast. And certainly not for a mediocre coaching talent like either of them.

They will likely look inside first then around the League.

That is exactly part of the reason Jim was let go, because he is an absolute control freak.

Best coach in their history was also a former Stanford coach, but he was no control freak.

Detailed, meticulous, planned....yes, Walsh was all those things, but he was not an in-your-face freak about it.

Helped that he had Paul Brown as his mentor, too. Also helped that he had an eye for talent within the draft, and via trade.

I mean he ONLY drafted the Best NFL QB ever, the Best NFL WR ever, the best SS ever, Charles Haley, traded for Steve Young, the list goes on and on.

Not sure Harbaugh ever did anything like that or showed anything close to that kind of eye for NFL talent. That was really Baalke's area, and I think Jim wanted in on that too, which is probably where the friction began.

Anyway, MICH getting JH is great for them, but makes me wonder who the Niners are thinking about for the new HC. Some were speculating early on that it was Tomsula (sp.?), but not sure who it will be.

Remember how the University was admonished by the media for ole purple face and lip reading of Kelly's cursing on the sideline his first couple years?

Rex Ryan at Notre Dame? LOL

I haven't watched Wittingham's games enough to know this but I think Kelly has done very well at ND. We has brought the program back, despite some hiccups along the way.

I enjoyed the 31-0 beatdown this year but I don't think I've enjoyed it enough. Harbaugh was the best hire possible for Michigan. It brings star power back to the program. I don't know if he'll turn Michigan around but I'll be honest: if we needed a coach and he was our hire, then I'd be ecstatic.

He's proven he understands college, he's proven he can win in the pros. The only thing standing in his way is if he loses control of the players or butts heads with the administration.

It may become a fun Michigan - tOSU battle once again.
