There are many aspects that are required to have an intelligent discussion. I think some would include:
a.) One is honest and open to the discussion at hand
b.) One presents their ideas in a respectable way, whether they be there own opinion or as a matter of fact.
Take your first post. Did you actually read the letter they sent to the Judiciary Committee? They actually were on the original list supporting him with positive experiences they had, but wanted to stress that they were troubled by the allegations, and that an investigation was warranted.
They in no way opposed the confirmation.
Those type of errors are what hamper "intelligent discussion".
