Hey Turduzzi, I know your reading this. the headcoach doesn't need to call Xs and Os. They need to motivate, build brand image, be the face of the program and recruit and I would rather have MFMF do all those things then you fugly ass face.

Yep. A veteran to help guide someone ND saw a ton of potential for success in. Then when it doesn't happen overnight (shocker!) but the tide starts to shift towards MF showing he can do this job as we hoped, the nay-sayers have to chime in as if their opinion amounts to anything. Hopefully that can be a bookmarked anonymous quote that we all come back to after a successful career for MF at ND.

If Freeman retired to become the face of Gucci, would Golden be your top choice to replace him at this point?

Agreed. I think he's a great football coach but that doesn't always translate to being a great HC.

That is so understated. The annals of football has way more assistant coaches who have been fired as HC's than assistants who became successful HC's.

With a last name like Golden, you knew he was the right man for the job. I think Marcus is turning into a good HC. He has the recruiting aspect down it seems, and he's really embraced the university and the players. If Al Golden is helping him with the other characteristics of the job, I'm all for it. I honestly thought Freeman's command of the defense his first and only year as DC was lacking, but I've been impressed with Golden's work the last two.

I'm signing a check for $12M and waiting for Dan Lanning or Mike Norvell to fill in their name. I might add DeBoer to that list after I see how he does on the trail tween now and 2026.

Agree 100%… freeman and golden are literally opposites. I think that’s why the two of them work so well together. It makes it easy to know who focuses on what.

You youngsters forgetting he already WAS a head coach? At Temple. And gave us all we could handle the one year??

This may be an unpopular opinion, If MF had to go, I’d want Lane Kiffin. Guy is a damn good coach and continues to evolve and mature. Plus, his sense of humor is gold and it would be amusing watching the blue hairs navigate his tenure. My only concern would be if he would ever “get” ND.

Golden was HC at Temple from 06-10 and turned them into a respectable MAC program and then passed the reins to Addazio. We didn’t play temple until 2013 when Rhule was at the helm.

correct, then 5 years as HC at the U before coaching in NFL.

Yep. I wouldn't be surprised if Golden got his fill of college head coaching when he was a younger man. And after the last couple years, if he wanted a college HC gig he'd probably have one. I'd guess he'll DC for Freeman as long as the vibes are good, unless/until an NFL DC job came calling maybe.
I could see him being an interim if something happened to Freeman, but feels unlikely he'll be our next for-real head coach. That's Tommy Rees obvs.

Yeah he's been out of head coaching for ten years. He's at the age where he can (hopefully) retire whenever he feels like it.

He's from Jersey and his coaching stops seem to suggest he's pretty content in boring places (Miami notwithstanding)

Ideally Mickens is his right hand man and is ready to step up when Golden gets a DC job in NFL in a year or two.

Yep, and the general consensus is that he loves breaking down film and coaching ball and hates doing everything else that comes with the job (media, recruiting, etc.). I would think that he's aware that he'd have to do a lot more of that stuff as the HC of any spot that's going to outspend ND. Big risk is that he'd go to the NFL as a DC in a second though.

I even read a quote this week where he was sort of lamenting that the NFL is a much more fun challenge because of the complexity. He was saying that the uncertainty that a week 1 brings in college football with regards to scheme is there every week in the NFL and it's more fun as a result. I thought it was interesting because it showed that he would like to go back, but also funny because Golden was flexing by strongly implying "I'm way overqualified to be coaching against these college OCs."
