Let's say that USC and Michigan bail on the Big 10 over the private equity deal...does ND team up with those hated rivals to build their own thing?

Bama should be whining about being in the SEC. ND should talk them into going independent. ND, USC, Bama as independent teams play each other each year. That would be cool.If Bama wants to take its own advice and stop playing football games, I could get behind that.

Had a really interesting lunch yesterday. The two guys I was with are Georgia and Florida State fans. They started talking about how NIL was hurting the sport and their teams aren’t doing as well because of it. When I told them I was a ND fan they both commented about how ND has used NIL to their advantage and become better as a result. It was kind of surreal to be in that side of the conversation when it comes to paying players.
Let’s stay independent as long as the sport will allow us and continue on this path of becoming the big dog.
Yeah, a few years ago I really thought joining a conference was inevitable and had made peace with it. Now, I think the current landscape reinforces our stance on independence.I thought so too, but this private equity deal most members of the BIG are trying to shove down the throats of unwilling members has to be on ND’s radar. Whether it actually goes through isn’t even relevant - the proposal alone reinforces the reality that joining a conference would put ND at the mercy of a bunch of largely irrelevant programs.
100% agreed. At this point we just wait things out as an independent and prepare for the inevitable super-league that is coming. The current setup is untenable - a few years more of Washington, Oregon, USC, etc having to ship their non-revenue sports out to College Park, MD and Piscataway will get the wheels turning on a new format. Just a matter of time.Yeah, a few years ago I really thought joining a conference was inevitable and had made peace with it. Now, I think the current landscape reinforces our stance on independence.
The funny part of this is he had to stop at Miami and Clemson because everyone knows no third team exists to even reasonably mention. Any member of the B1G or SEC could probably name 3 good teams!

Agree 100%. Notre Dame has already agreed to a 12 game series with Clemson starting in 27. Kinda tough to figure out who else in the ACC might have a pulse over the next 10 years. FSU is in the toilet. Miami? Maybe, but they dropped us. Maybe GT? Maybe VT with BigGame James? Who knows? This year the ACC is crap, who knows what next year brings. It's not like schedules are made up a week in advance. If this guy wants ND to play tougher ACC goes each year, maybe tell Miami to stop dropping us from their schedule!
Fuck MiamiAnd Miami can't keep ducking us in South Bend either.
And we played GT and VA last year and they happened to not be very good. This year, both have taken big steps forward. It's just sort of the luck of the draw in that conference. Hell, no one was factoring in Clemson as a consistently good team when we entered the ACC agreement. We've only played FSU once when they were worth a damn and we almost beat them at home (that penalty on our go ahead score still infuriates me), other than that they've sucked and we missed them in 2023.Agree 100%. the other schools that would do it successfully? Bama, USC, OSU ?If you have a national brand why would you dilute it with Arkansas, Rutgers and Iowa State type schools in suckling off your conference contracts? Would be hilarious to see a pile of schools go independent to upend the super conference trend.

People have to remember that the conferences play other sports. IU has stunk up the place when it came to FB, but ruled the roost for quite a while in basketball. Northwestern for ages had a terrible BB program, but they are competitive now. I get FB is where the money is, but you have to figure in the other sports as part of a solution. The reality is all these conferences carry dead weight.
Indiana had 5 winning seasons in the last 25 years - lets talk about the fraud of them being in a conference. They had one or zero conference wins in 14 of the last 30 seasons. Socialism at its best keeping that complete pile of dogshit program in a supposed "power" conference. Bottom of the B1G(ot) with losing conference records is Northwestern, UCLA, Rutgers, Maryland, Ped State, Wisconsin, Michigan State and Purdue. Half of those teams will be lucky to have a winning in conference record any time soon let alone compete for a title. That's excluding Illinois, Nebraska and Minnesota who are all 4-3. STFU about your power conferences until they get serious about clearing the dead wood.
SEC is guilty too - Kentucky, Vandy, Miss St, Arkansas, South Carolina, never competing for a conference title and happy to upset a juggernaut every once in a while riding SEC coattails to preseason/mid season rankings that almost always fall apart by year end. Gamecocks best run was with Spurrier - 6-2 in conference three years in a row, only time they ever had less than 3 losses in conference. Why do they get the same $$ from the conference contract as Bama and UGA? Nobody outside of So Carolina is tuning in FOR them.
If you aren't going to have relegation, you have to be regional. Makes no sense for UCLA to suck it up and force OSU/Michigan/PSU/Iowa host or haul their ass to LA in the middle of the season for football, not to mention force women's lacrosse to do the same mid week.
Arkansas has a stronger history than Mizzou or A&M, I could see them coming back to prominence down the line. The reality is all these conferences carry dead weight.

Funny thing is the ACC actually has more parity than most. Since 2014, 11 different teams have made the conference championship game (12 if you count us, of course). The long-term members that haven't done so - Duke, NC State, Syracuse - have generally had competitive teams many years, especially NC State. The reality is all these conferences carry dead weight.

Sampson has not been out there sticking up for ND very much. Very wishy washy. Sure, it's "just" a tweet, but it feels personal when ND is a full member in many other sports, and a "partner" in football and there are other cases to be made for Miami to be in the playoffs. Why are they not posting graphics comparing Miami to Vanderbilt, Utah, BYU, and Bama? Why specifically ND? Fuck them and fuck Sampson for being soft on this issue. It was hilarious that Sampson's first comments were basically, "Oh who cares, it's just a tweet, stop getting triggered by that," then when Brice said ND was pretty pissed, he changed his tune (a few minutes after that clip).
May be more than just personal if I'm interpreting what Brice said correctly - ACC is violating their own rules by targeting ND.Sampson has not been out there sticking up for ND very much. As in worried we might cancel it? That seems a little extreme. Also would be hard to replace like half our schedule at this point. Now that this is out there, I have a buddy whose family is SU boosters(not huge but involved), they’re “very worried” about the ND game happening next year… TIFWIW
Yeah. I don’t see it either, I think it’s more ND throwing around their weight/voicing displeasure if I had to guess. As in worried we might cancel it? That seems a little extreme. Also would be hard to replace like half our schedule at this point.
