I do an extended moment of silence every morning of 9/11 at school and give a short speech to commemorate the victims on the announcements. My staff know it’s mandatory to discuss 9/11 at some point in their classrooms on this day. I don’t dictate much, but I want this generation to understand just what a seminal and harrowing moment that was for our nation.

As a history teacher, I appreciate how seriously you take today and that you understand the importance of our children knowing about it. They can't possibly fathom what it was like, and I hope they never will. But, we can at least guide them farther down the path of knowing what it was like.

Today our principal said on the announcements that we were "celebrating the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks."

There's nothing to fucking celebrate. Maybe it was an honest slip of the tongue, but he's never emphasized the anniversary.

I always share my experience with my students. That was only my second day of class my freshman year of college. I started at Seton Hall, before transferring.

Being that close to NYC, you can imagine what it was like watching the towers fall surrounded by hundreds of people that had no idea if their loved ones were alive or dead.

Never forget.

The biggest thing I try and emphasize to my staff is to make it as personal as you’re able. It was personal to all of us who remember and lived it. I’ve never not had a kid just be absolutely enraptured when replaying the events of that day.

You remember the craziest things, you know? The minutia. I remember my mom making a baked ziti pasta that we could eat quickly before we went to Mass at 7:00 that night.

I remember how eerie it was to see the stained glass—so bright and vibrant on Sunday mornings—be so dark and ominous without the sun behind it.

I remember how important our first 8th grade football game felt that day, all of us in our blue home jerseys ready for that night and then immediately realizing that football really didn’t mean shit.

I remember being in class with a teacher I absolutely loathed—I mean one of my least favorite teachers—and I’ll never forget seeing her shed actual tears as she told us what was going on as she turned on the tv. I always felt a lot differently about her after that. It totally humanized her in my eyes.

I remember being terrified for my uncles who lived in NYC at the time. They both were out of ground zero that day, luckily. But one of them had a medical practice near Washington Square Park (he happened to be at another clinic in Connecticut that day) and the other owned a club further toward Times Square. At 13 and being from Indiana you don’t realize how big NYC is until you actually visit. I just kept picturing them at ground zero being caught up in the carnage.

I’ll never forget.

I can't remember most of my 20's, but I can remember almost everything from this week.

From my step mother running into my room to wake me up and turning my tv on. To having to work that night slinging pizza's and only having a 20 minute break when Bush addressed the nation.

I remember Sunday I was hanging out with the girl I was dating and just getting pissed off at the constant coverage. Think I even said "For fucks sake just give me a story of a kid beating cancer."

He was a good man. A husband and father. He went to work on 9/11/2001 and never came home.

I remember.

CNN.com - September 11 Memorial

Every year I believe BGIF did this, whether it was in this thread or the other 9/11 thread. Since he's no longer here:

He was a good man. A husband and father. George Strauch Jr. went to work on 9/11/2001 and never came home. We remember for BGIF.

The Nat Geo documentary series on Disney plus about 9/11 is excellent. Incredibly hard to watch but it’s a must watch for every American. I’ll never forget

We remember those who perished that fateful day. And we remember the heroes and family members left behind.

Thanks for getting to this for us, T Town. BGIF is smiling up above us I'm sure.

Here's a bit I found about George Strauch. God bless all who lost someone close to them on that day.

A lot of ordinary people were heroic that day, a true testament to the American spirit. I’ll never forget.

If anyone is in need of a reminder of that day National Geographic did a 6 part documentary series on 9/11 called one day in America. It should be a standard watch in every school in America as a way to remember

It’s a shame that they don’t teach the young age about this that much.

I still remember this just like it was yesterday.

I will never forget this day. And because of social media, I will always be reminded how many despicable people deny what happened that day.

When taking a tour of the 9/11 Memorial in NYC a few years back, this was one of the most memorable stories (and that’s saying something as they’re all memorable in their own way).

That guy joined the US Army when he immigrated to the US and was a highly decorated Viet Nam vet, as well.

I follow CMH on the twitters and they put this out, today (read the thread).

I asked my 5th grader if they talked about it today and she said nope.

And I said wTF. Seriously?
I don't think we talked about it much in school but I guess we all saw it on TV.

Should probably be doing stuff for the kids these days to make sure they know.

Right I thought they would talk about it as a historic event similar to other days. But apparently not a mention.
