I’m guessing that he has 4-5 targets against NC State. At least one of those will be a deep shot.

ND is killing teams right now with an extremely vanilla and risk-averse playbook.
Can’t stress enough how well this is working through two games. There’s no reason to do anything else.

It’s concerning that almost everyone else around him is finding a way to makes plays. Maybe we’re expecting too much too soon from him? Some players just take time to develop. All the potential in the world just needs to develop.

Drive, toughness, hands.

He's getting every chance and he better take it quickly because Rico/Greathouse aren't getting any younger and next year Cam Williams and Braylon aren't going to give a F who's in front of them.

I fear Sam doesn't trust him at this point.

Haha. Isn’t the phrase aren’t getting any younger reserved for people who are getting on a bit - it seems early useage 2 games into their true freshman year.

I dunno, man. Either we're saving him for a surprise... or he kinda doesn't have it.

I'm leaning towards the former at this point, but who knows? He seems like such a good smart kid. I'm rooting for him. But throwing him a couple go routes today wouldn't have given away any strat.

it's weird.

What I find frustrating is the staff is giving him every opportunity to be the starter. He is doing very little with it. He literally caught the ball with his chest today. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of fight or drive to be great in his game right now. I see others passing him up soon

Count me in the camp where Hartman isn't targeting him a lot. Lack of separation, lack of trust, whatever. He played a lot of snaps against Navy and rarely got opportunities.

He has to make plays when given opportunities which he didn't do last week. Too many other good options and too good of a qb. Potential is great if it equates to results.

Yeah... I'm starting to worry about that too.

Sam is a vet. If he isn't seeing a trusted dude, he just won't look his way. Hopefully we're wrong.

On the other hand how good is Thomas. He is indeed trustworthy. Has he dropped anything in his career?
Not only that, but he looks faster to me than last year. He had a great game. Big possession receivers are perfect for Hartman's passes.

Everyone should also constantly keep in mind that Sam doesn't have an unlimited number of passes called by our OC. So NOBODY is going to be targeted a lot. That means everyone who wants some catches better be aggressive and efficient. I haven't yet seen the "aggressive" attacking of the game by this young fellow, compared to some of our other guys. (I hate "eyetests" but this time the on-field demeanor just doesn't do it for me so far.)

What’s weird to me is that neither Tobias nor Colzie have yet established themselves (yes Colzie had that screen pass TD vs Navy but that could’ve been anyone). They are our two big outside, high-ceiling WRs and neither has yet claimed that spot.

Early on, he seemed to be misaligned and Hartman had to play traffic cop and signal him to move to the other side of the line.

The criticism I hear on the pods is that he’s not aggressive going for the ball. The prime example was the end zone throw last Sat vs Navy. Some said they’d have been happy if he had drawn an OPI but instead he waited for the ball to come to him instead of adjusting and going back towards the ball.

Which was also an issue last year... not knowing where to line up

Wait, are you telling me we don't know what the hell we're talking about?
In before the stat came out:

"While not focusing on him I couldn't help but notice Merriweather does block his ass off and hustle downfield. To me that says he's engaged at least."

So some of us 😜

It took you an aside glance to slightly amend all the digs you’ve been taking at the guy. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. 😂
Not digs, just observations. He plays soft, has weak hands, and I fear Sam doesn't trust him. He also blocks his ass off.

All are true even if not ideal. He can improve this year, he needs to step it up. But the intense blocking tells me he's bought in.

Did you fear Sam didn’t trust our TEs because they had minimal targets before one series last game? Do you now fear Sam doesn’t trust Colzie because he was MIA yesterday? TB blocks hard, but is soft? You see where I’m going here.
No. There weren't copious reports all fall that the TEs weren't stepping up. Or Marcus Freeman calling them out 2 weeks before the season. They also squat. Never had fear about the TEs
