Did he want to come to ND?

Never read anything to warrant being that bummed about him. There’s this overhanging assumption that being behind on offering doomed us and would have been Irish had offered earlier, but I’ve still never seen anything that proves that wasn’t just an educated assumption.

Should be interesting to see who dropped the ball here? Kelly or Rees? mean while we get the 27th best qb in the class.

Or we have the 15th best QB.

Regardless, ND coaches really liked him.

Coaches were likely left with a choice in early March, we stick with Angeli we have close to 100% chance of landing him. We start heavily pursuing Allar which we might have a 20% chance of landing and we are stuck with an empty bag.

Angeli had big time offers early in the process and was a consensus 4 star at a big name school. No idea if those ended up being committable but early on a QB from Bergen Catholic with "offers" from OSU, PSU, Michigan, Oregon, LSU, and Miami seemed like a no brainer.

Why would Kelly want a QB that throws a rope past 20 yards? How would he scheme us into all the points that way?

That was probably part of it - but its still a ball drop. Like the Lenzy one in the end zone.

This kid looks good and could end up being the next hype QB in college football, but that isn’t set in stone. He seems like a real high upside prospect, with all the tangible traits you want in a QB. The thing the rankings won’t show is someone’s grit, leadership, and other intangible traits.

Can’t judge either Angeli or Allar in that department, but hopefully Angeli is full of all those unmeasurable traits.

I know Franklin is the hot name for USC but I just don't buy it. He is recruiting well at Penn State, and has had some decent seasons. Not sure USC is an upward trajectory position in CFB as of this moment. IF Franklin leaves for USC I would almost bet Allar goes with him and becomes the next failed USC quarterback.

Well just a couple of fact checks.first how many national championships does SC have? PSU? Heismans? In a Fifty mile radius, which campus hasore Four stars?

Yeah, those things you have mentioned are all correct in that USC has more of all of them. It should be noted though that prior to 2004 USC last won a championship in 1978. Not a great track record for recent success in that category. Having talent in your backyard doesn’t preclude success necessarily. It definitely doesn’t guarantee Franklin would see more success recruiting then he has had at Penn State.

My thoughts aren’t based on those things anyway. He has already established things where he is at now, in comparison to having to start fresh at USC. Also, if he’s a smart man more than the things you mentioned go into selecting a workplace. One of the most important being competence of the administration(your bosses) and their commitment to winning. IMO USC has been missing that piece for a while now.

I'll take USC over PSU all day long. USC is a much easier place to recruit to than PSU. I compare USC to ND prior to BK. All the critics said ND wasn't what it used to be. I always maintained that it was more a bad string of coaching hires at ND, not the program. Much like USC has had since poodles left. Without the same academic restrictions, one could argue that it will be easier and faster to get USC back.

Yet no one knows if he was truly interested in ND and would have committed here. In addition, many here are already anointing him the next great QB because of his ranking. Obviously they do not remember Blake Barnett, Gunner Kiel, Graham Mertz, Hunter Johnson, Brandon Wimbush, etc...all top 5 QBs that did not have strong college careers.

Good points. If he wasn't truly interested... Why not? We hired an offensive guru as Head Coach, QBs should be tripping over themselves to be QB1 at ND. The Clemson and Alabama guys were all replaced by starting NFL QBs 1st or 2nd rounders, 5 stars. We didn't have that to replace them.

This. The this one stings and we are going to regret this type mindframe with Allar is bizarre to me

It has been discussed in other threads that Allar was better than Angeli. Because others wanted Wimsatt. This goes all the way back to the other site.

Penn State wasn't even the first P5 school to offer him. That honor goes to Iowa.

PSU offers on January 30th and suddenly the flood gates open. Ohio State offered September 8th.

Seems like many others were late to the party here. He went from a three star dude in Ohio to the best quarterback in America pretty quick. It's hard for me to take this stuff seriously anymore.

Makes me question the thoroughness of NDs QB evals. If we can evaluate and find undervalued players in other positions were we late on him from an eval POV or did we just have other realistic targets we liked better?

We offered in the same 4 weeks span as most of his P5 offers and after we were out of with Ty Simpson, who they liked more.

Yurcich was talking to him from his Texas days. Yurcich helped develop Fields. Yurcich is from Ohio. This has never been about a late ND offer relative to PSU. It’s Allar liked Yurcich from the beginning. So if we want to critique, critique that Rees is not Yurcich. But the offer timing (relative to PSU) I think was minimal impact.

Yurcich was on him in 2019. Even Allar and his trainer surprised at the time. It’s a slam dunk eval by him and then they meshed well from there
