Portal is probably a bigger problem than the draft, TBH.

I'm not sure why they have the portal window open before the bowl games. It's the most unstable time of year for rosters, between coaching turnover and NFL decisions that might impact future playing time for some guys. And starting next year you'll have 12 teams in the CFP - those guys mostly aren't going to want to transfer out while they're still playing, but some will feel pressure to to secure a good landing spot.

I guess the academic calendar is a consideration (ha!) but I wonder if they could just push the portal window to start Jan. 1 or something.
They can visit and commit to the new school, get enrolled and practice for spring ball.. look at the recruiting calendar with early signing period and ee.... everything is moving up and quicker... the window of opportunity has shrunk

Screw all that i wanna win 10 games. The CFP may not care about winning the games but i still do. Im excited for angeli to show us what he has
Yup. 10 games is good for perceptions and recruiting. I'll take another bowl win too, helps the average after the struggles we used to have.

I could see him sticking around to get his degree & then weigh his options. Don’t forget that he’d be one play away from being the starter next year. Leonard is a physical player and Duke could’ve used a backup as good as Angeli this season.

Yep, just keep building. ND has been close to the top for years now. Just need to put it all together.

Holds the ball just a tad too long, he underthrew Faison a lot on one play and needs to know where his outlets are to avoid losing big yardage that kills drives....

Having said that, Angeli showed up ready to play. A very high completion percentage for a first time starter, with the top 4 wideouts gone, a 3-4 new OL and RBs 2-4 and he lit up a completely outmanned team.

That is a helluva first start.

He showed a lot of poise. It wasn't perfect, but he showed ability and a slow heart beat. Angeli should definitely get a shot at competing for the starting job, and hopefully he pushes Leonard to be even better than expected.

Hartman late in the season wasn't any better than Angeli today IMO. Be nice to have both Leonard and Angeli in fall of '24 but that may be too much to hope for.

Think Steve should take that game and get out of dodge, respectfully. He’s a good QB and ND has already made their decision with Lenard. Would love for him to stay but he’s gotta do what’s best for him.

We win the Ohio state game with either angelli or Leonard with their running, imo.

I'm sorry but these statements are so insane to me.

You just saw Angeli play a reduced playbook/gameplan that he had a month to prep for against an Oregon State JV team. You didn't see him have to go through the grind of a season and put yourself on film for quality opponents to gameplan against you. Frankly that grind got to Hartman this year, unfortunately.

Tyler Buchner was the bowl game MVP last year. Now he's swinging sticks on the lacrosse team.

The way the team was built in offense, which game does angelli lose then? Hartman was not very good towards the end if the year. I don't think it's that much of a drop off because ND would have just ran the ball, then throw in some easy PA and Angelli ability to run RPO that Hartman couldn't.

With that said, my comment was special about Ohio State. And Hartmans lack of want to in that game was some of the reason we lost.

Excellent first start. No doubt want some of those throws back as well as that ill timed jump fumble.

That said, the kid earned some options today. Hopefully a kid growing up loving the Irish, the value of an nd degree and some extra nil chee will be enough to keep him from the portal.

I like the idea of an aggressive Leonard being utilized as a runner which emphasises the need for a 2nd gun in the pen. We'll see if MF, Denbrock and GG can convince him to stay.

Impossible to really know how Angeli would have done as a starter this season. He had a better command/knowledge of the offense, based on his comfort level changing plays at the line. He's slightly more mobile than Sam, but Sam is probably a better gunslinger. I'm glad we have/had both. I hope Angeli pushes Leonard, maybe he can win the job outright...and if he's legit, I'm fine with that. He's been here since day 1 and deserved this shot today.

Agreed.

We don’t need to nitpick Angeli. Or debate how he might or might’ve done this season. We can enjoy a positive ending to the season, double digit wins, and upgrades across the board.
