Tommy is trying to run an NFL style spread offense IMO. Trouble is that his OL stinks, his receivers stink, and his QB didn't have the skill set to run that. And the rest of the room is a huge question mark.
I’m not even sure it’s a spread style offense. Like Lax said, IDK what the hell he’s trying to run. I think Pete has said multiple times they’ve been trying to be a ball control, run first offense because they assumed their OL would dominate.

And as Pete astutely pointed out, if they evaluated this offense as a ball control, run first offense and are getting massacred up front, one must question TR’s evaluation abilities.

That is definitely a good point. Also, let's never, ever try to be a ball control team ever again. Lol.

I dunno. Buchner's the one who had season-ending shoulder surgery today and whose once promising career is now very much in doubt. Tommy gets paid either way.
Are you saying there haven't been plays for Buchner to make? Here's the shitty part about his situation: if he had executed at a higher level, he might not even be in the game at the end against Marshall. Put up 30+ pts, hand it off to Pyne and go start recovering.

Once promising career in what way? I was as excited about him as anyone but he simply needs more time or he'll never be a great QB. We've seen very little promise in his freshman and now truncated sophomore seasons.

We must bring in an immediate challenger for QB, either in the 2023 class or as a transfer. I have about 5% faith in Buchner panning out. Great kid, hope nothing but success for his life but we need a QB who can throw the football.

He couldn't throw a TD vs Marshall.

Of course Buchner could/should play better than he did, but you talk about who is and isn't suffering for it.

Rees will get paid, what, $2M this season? And if he gets canned he'll go find another job. Buchner spent yesterday in an operating room and now has months of recovery to look forward to while wondering if he still has a future as a high-level football player. Because the professional football coach he trusted with his career at age 17 failed to develop him and then asked him to do things he wasn't equipped to do on the field.

Sure. Buchner will still get a free education and have the opportunity to mend, return to football and develop in whatever way he is capable. And if he developed enough, he could be worth $100s of millions in the NFL. And if not, then he has a massive network of ND alumni to lean on after football.

If Rees doesn't salvage this, his chosen QB who failed to live up to his billing, will have left a mark on Rees resume making it harder to launch to the next position.

It's so easy to play these dumb games of 'who is the victim'.

I'm suggesting we dole out blame to everyone who is deserving. It starts with the coaches and it includes the players. What we've seen on the field has been embarrassing for a program with so much talent.

Regardless if Carr comes in 2023 or not you need to bring in two QB’s next year whether that’s recruits or transfer portal

Highest QBR in the two games he played in last year. Probably would have won that Cinci game if he played the entire time.

Also, for what it's worth, Pyne scored 1 TD against Marshall in 2 series while Buchner scored 2 TDs playing 11 series. Buchner also threw a pick 6 though, so he effectively took one of those TDs off the board. In the end TB played almost the entire game and put us up by the same number of points as Pyne.

Buchner may give the offense another "dimension" but he's certainly not shown any consistency yet either and Drew has been the better pocket passer. For all TB's wheels it hasn't produced a lot of points. Just 24 points this year, 17 failed drives with one being a pick 6. Pyne averages a score (Usually a TD) almost every 2nd possession between the Wisconsin, Cinci, and Marshall games.

But he played crummy in a Spring Game, so...he's garbage because Spring Games with their weird rules and mixed up rosters mean everything
I stand corrected. Pyne is an improvement and I’m happy to be wrong. 🍀

I think the OL came together at the right time and the offense just started clicking once that happened. I think the same thing would have happened for Tyler if the OL was solid while he was healthy. I'm glad Drew is stepping up the last 10 quarters, the schedule is looking manageable now if we continue to get better. Regardless I still want Carr coming next year so he can start getting reps and/or go fishing for another big '24 QB.

Yep. Pyne is doing everything he can to help this team win. Much respect for that. But also you see his ceiling pretty clearly.
Rees has shifted the offense to play to Pyne's strengths. If Buchner had not gotten hurt and Rees had shifted the offense similarly, our ceiling would be higher (b/c Buchner has a bigger arm and better running ability).
Either way, we probably need a grad transfer next year to (at least) compete for the starting job, and to give Carr (at least) a year to acclimate.

People are always talking ceiling, ceiling, ceiling. Just execute and win games, that's all that matters. We've got some reinforcements coming in at WR next year to help things out, OL depth, defensive playmakers too. Just gotta keep winning and keep the guys committed, plenty of ceiling in the incoming classes.

Think part of it was sorta the reality that we all knew Kelly wasn't going to be at ND much longer after the 17-21 run. And once he figured out how to really start winning at ND everyone felt the clock ticking. And the quickest way to go from good to elite is with an elite QB. Feels like a different calculus at work with CMF, at least for now. And it also helps that we do have a 5 star QB committed.

Couple reason IMO:
  1. The situation simply didn't require it and Pyne was back in before the situation DID require it. But also...
  2. He's presumably less effective than Pyne, at least at this point in time. Let that sink in...

Reading between the lines they said, "we should have taken Drew Allar but we didn't lol, so we took this guy who basically didn't even throw the ball in high school, and we have no idea how to develop him anyways, so yeah he's not good either."

Well his own high school program wasn't big on him throwing the football either, so maybe they knew something Tommy couldn't figure out.

Ok but a game against UNLV is the perfect time to do things the situation does not require.

Every year, big boys play small boys and get backups reps. This was a perfect time to give him some reps in the parts of the playback he does understand.

i agree. when ND was up 30-7 in the second half i don't get why you don't let angeli come in for a couple series.
