Yeah... There was a presser with Al this fall sometime where he talked about how much he loved Tyson and basically said he doesn't understand why he hasn't transfered yet.

Not quite 90. 24/7 listed him at 250, and ND's signing day video & profile had him at 269. He went up to 290, then cut down to 260 or 270 this year, can't remember.

What could've been. ND really needed another guy in that class to hit. No wonder in danger area and playing a lot of freshman in the dline.

Right. I think I meant 70, he was originally 220 when recruitment began, and he was up to 290. That's what they had on his UND profile, but he may have slimmed down. Still a lot of weight in a short period of time. Still think he would have been better sticking at DE.

Couldn't find a thread for him but Aiden Gobaria also entered the portal today after being medically "retired" in the summer. Not sure what to make of this. Are we using medicals to get to the 85 limit rather than their real purpose?

Most likely.

Healthy enough to play football at the D1 level, not healthy enough to get meaningful time on a team striving for a playoff appearance.

Medical Hardship it is.

I'll add, that if the scholarship limit was at 105 for this season, Gobiara would still be on the roster.

I’d imagine it’s also a way for some of these guys to stay at Notre Dame for an extra semester or two and get their degree before transferring.
If the degree’s not important to them they are of course free to transfer out in the traditional way.

I was against it until the players decided they are pros & want paid.
I know he isn’t getting paid, but that’s the collateral damage that comes with 10% of the players ruining college football to benefit themselves.
If anybody is getting paid, then anybody can be cut.
I hate it. And I was against all of it since the beginning.

Pay and the portal. Kids being able to transfer on a whim was at least partly in response to the complaint of coaches being able to leave with years left on their contract, while players had to sit out a year.

The flip side of that is while coaches can leave at any time, they can also be fired at any time, so now if the player can leave whenever he wants, the coaches can "fire" him if they want.

Playing devils advocate here.
A scholarship player who’s put on a medical remains on scholarship, they just don’t count towards the 85 football scholarships and are not eligible to play.

So yes they sit out a year but it’s more akin to being suspended with pay than being fired, and they can still work towards a degree which is probably worth more in the long run than they will ever make playing football. Or, if they prefer, they can transfer immediately and go play somewhere else.

It’s not a bad way to handle this, all things considered.

I think the bigger complaints about SEC teams and Bama was the greyshirting and scholarships only being for single years, not a four year commitment by the school. We are still honoring the scholarship but the team doesn't believe some of these guys will remain healthy enough to contribute meaningfully. I hate it for the players and wish them the best if they are still wanting to go out there and play, but if they wanted to stay at ND and get a free degree, they can.

It would be hard to thumb the nose as fans to a medical hardship and a free ride/ND degree. Might be different if you're an athlete and still think you have something to prove, but an ND degree can carry you farther than a degree from the traditional state school football factories.

The good old days of yore when grey shirting and medical retirements were used for roster management discussions. SEC abused it and ND couldn’t or wouldn’t because of “academics”. Great times. :)
