Read an article on The Athletic about his recruitment. Key points.

1. ND was his solid choice until Lincoln Riley called late in the process.
2. He actually flipped to OU and told Elston as much.
3. Freeman calls him as soon as he's hired and makes a huge impact.
4. He thinks it over and flips back.
5. Mother noted how Riley contacted them a lot "Even though he's a very important person".
6. Article read like Kelly had little or no contact with him.

This is just an old dogs new tricks situation. He's not going to suddenly start recruiting now. Which makes hiring elite recruiters like Freeman absolutely necessary.

Didn't Kelly essentially say a year or two ago that he'd stop being lazy and be more accessible to recruits? Thank goodness he's at least bringing on aggressive recruiters.

Number 6 is irritating . I wonder how well we could recruit if Kelly cared as much as a Saban or Dabo on the recruiting trail. We hear academics as the excuse all the time why we can't recruit well but I really wonder if a lot of it is effort.

Oh well, guess it is what it is.

Per 247, we've averaged the 12th ranked class over the last 5 years (including the 2021 class). There's no reason to believe we wouldn't be in the 8-10 range on a yearly basis if Kelly weren't lazy.

I wonder how aggressive Rees is on the trail? We definitely need Rees to match Freeman. Problem is Rees doesn't have the same rep as Freeman.

“A lot of coaches will try to become really close friends with recruits, but that's not Nick. He's matter-of-fact and all business," said Todd Grantham, who was a defensive line coach under Saban at Michigan State in the late '90s and is now the defensive coordinator at Louisville. "When coaches do become buddies with the recruit, and then the recruit gets on campus and the coach is no longer his best friend, that's when problems can occur. But Nick just lays it all out there: 'Here's what we have to offer both academically and athletically. I'll launch you to a NFL career. Take it or leave it.”

From a B/R article on Bama recruiting. Bama recruiting works because he is damn hard on his assistants to recruit. But don’t think Saban is calling a recruit 10 times with his wife. The above quote from Grantham I’d say fits how BK approaches most recruits, Saban just has way more cache when he does it

Uh oh. The new guys are bitter. We got bitter new guys!

If you stick around, by 2024 you'll both be worn down and appreciative of the Top of Tier 2 program BK leaves for not Urban.

Think of it as digital castration.

BK is doing a good job and I am grateful for being out of Weis and Willingham land. Just asking a question, not hating.

And for every one of these stories there is one of Ceyair Wright, TMA, or Jaden Gould who get tons of contact from Kelly. Cherry picking a story to fit a narrative because for whatever reason, some in the ND media have take an ownership for BK’s success at ND and like to tell him what to do. It’s so petty and stupid.

He's just giving you grief lol. It's a valid criticism, but one that gets recirculated on IE every Jan/Feb when we hear that BK isn't communicating enough with certain recruits.

Then the beat reporters that keep their ear to the ground will write articles likes this almost immediately:

Offseason narratives are fun banter!

Yeah BK could be better on the trail, but people end up complaining around this time of year and acting like he's Ty Willingham.

And the HC can’t recruit the whole board. So you could take every program in the country, pick a recruit, and do the same. It’s completely unrealistic. So, what they do is break down a group of prospects that Kelly is in contact with personally. Him and Polian were lead recruiters for Wright and TMA. But, that won’t make Sampson’s article.

These articles like to paint Kelly’s recruiting efforts as 0. Is it a 10? Doubtful. But it also isn’t nothing.

Wasn’t Kelly beyond attentive and max effort on Shipley? Still lost to Clemson. I think the simplest answer is the best one, you think if a bit more effort would automatically land better recruits was a fact BK wouldn’t just do it?

Wasn't looking to stir up the pot here. lol

The truth is probably somewhere in between. Given the profile on this one, I figured BK would have spoken to him at some point and maybe he did, but it didn't make the article. You also have to wonder how much of this contact was Riley putting on a full court press at the last minute trying to pull this one out compared to normal timelines?

That bball reference was for you Cruz.

I've given up on basketball except for Baylor to win it all.

And Riley mentions will never get anything positive from me. He was always the enemy as soon as he left HS.

Collectively we should feel honored.

But this is the internet, so expectations are not high to begin with.

Per Trieu, LSU/Clemson offered post commitment. Ford just doesn’t report them

If he and Agu are truly 6’6 and Gobaira is 6’5 then hot damn that’s some crazy length at DE.

I was thinking earlier today, while listening to Elston, that the DL is just ready to go for years to come. One wave after another. And, Tyson is part of the newest wave. Unreal the work he’s done building that unit. The NFL is going to have quite a few ND DL in 4-5 years.

Wishful thinking here, but I'd love to see Elston be at ND what Larry Johnson was at Penn State for many years. No matter who the head coach is.
