Jack Nickel - Milton, GA - TE

Offers (24): Kentucky, Massachusetts, Appalachian State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Purdue, Vanderbilt, FSU, South Carolina, NC State, Louisville, Maryland, Nebraska, BC, UAB
Colorado, USF, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Miami, Notre Dame, Oregon, Iowa, Penn State

247: 87
Rivals: 5.7
ESPN: NR

Out of the top 30 TE’s on 247 (not composite but their own ranking), Nickel is the 3rd most offered TE prospect outside of Donovan Green (#1 TE) and Trent McGaughey (#9 TE). Bottom line is ND is essentially chasing a future 4* TE that just hasn’t had rankings updates or two summers worth of 7on7 to move up. He could push 35+ offers if didn’t commit before next spring and summer. Only surprising one is that UGA hasn’t offered up to now. Anyway I’d be excited to get him. Just surprised that ND is taking 2 in 2021 which will give them crazy numbers at TE in the future.

IDK if I’d say ND will have crazy numbers of TE’s in the future. I would say they will have a comfortable number of TE’s. The number of TE’s is right where it should be.

2020 is Brock Wright’s last year.

Tommy Tremble has eligibility up to 2022. But, Tremble will be in the NFL by the 2022 season. Tremble’s last season will probably be 2021. Heck, if Tremble blows-up this season he may leave for the NFL after the 2020 season.

2022 will be the last season of eligibility for George Takacs.

So the 2022 season you are looking at:
Mayer
Bauman
Berrong
Nickel
Takacs (final season of eligibility)
Possibly second TE in 2021?

What is it with ND and GA tight ends? Not complaining just genuinely curious. Seems like we are getting our pick of the litter there last 4-5 years.

When you recruit the position well and coach it well they produce on the field. And kids pick up on that. Hence the reason they need to get better options at Qb.

No idea what it is looks like some sort of youth football program but his brother won player of the year in state of Georgia for 8th grade. Again not sure how/big a program this is but can’t be a bad thing

I may have been hallucinating while listening to the II podcast this week, but it sounded like they were a bit down on TE recruiting.

For any particular reason?

Seems staff has a chance at either Raridon or Staes in addition to Jack.

Basically they think that the recruiting doesn't live up to production, as opposed to OL recruiting. They conceded that you probably can't bring in a Mayer level prospect every year, but every other year is doable. I agree to an extent. Mayer's replacement should be in the '22 class and not the '23 class. Then again, Mayer level recruits are pretty dang rare.

Mayer is going to be a Gronk, George Kittle type player in the NFL in my opinion. There probably won't be another player like him at ND in quite some time as I firmly believe he is a generational type player at the position. Time will tell though...

Yeah there isn’t even a “Mayer or Gilbert” this year. Really not close actually. Just star gazing here, but 2023 doesn’t seem to sniff that type of guy either

Shocker! They're complaining about recruiting not matching on field production. It's insanity but par for the course. If the production is there then the recruiting should be commended not complained about.

There's a 3*/4* kid named Oscar Delp who I think is going to be great. Best Jr TE film I saw. Hardly hear anything about him but last I saw it was MI & GA out front.

2023 will be LOADED for ND.

I think there's a little validity to their complain, but it did surprise me how much they were harking on it. It reminded me of Mike Frank complaining about 5 years back or so that the recruiting class didn't have a Q in it. As if generational guards are even in every class, let alone easy to recruit lol.

Obviously we don’t know quite as much about Nickel and TE2 yet, but pretty sure the staff loves Bauman. I won’t lose sleep till proven otherwise here lol

Must have reached the pinnacle if a position which consistently produces draft picks is scrutinized. If there is one position I feel confident in trusting the staff it is tight end.

Decommitted.

Thats a shame to me, we’ll wait for details but I hope it was Jack’s choice, I’ve tooted the horn of Nickel continuing to be part of this class. We’ll have to see if this was on NDs side, Jack read the tea leaves or just completely outside of other TE recruiting

Wonder if he didn't like that we were pushing hard for Holden Staes, another TE from GA.
Good news coming on Staes??

I doubt if either side will admit what happened, ND certainly won't and most players these days are smart about what they say to the media. Both Rairdon and Staes are rated higher than Nickel so there's that.

As long as we were honest with the kid there's no problem IMO. And it probably wasn't "don't come here" more like "yeah maybe you're right, Jack, playing time may be hard to get"

Honestly, I really don't like this. Nickel is a solid prospect, a good kid, and has been a solid recruiter for ND. I like Staes and Raridon more but I hope this was Nickel's decision and not the staff pushing him out.

Yeah, I am not a fan of forcing kids out. I hope Nickel just decided he didn't want to be part of a 2 TE class.

ND's got five tight ends on scholarship right now and none of them are running out of eligibility. So I don't think ND would actually take another 3 TE's (with exceptions for positional flexibility). If they were willing to take two more commits it would be a strong indication that the first guy was already out or is getting forced out.

Definitely feels like a soft force out. I imagine the convo went something like, “You’re welcome to stay, but we’re planning to accept commitments from two guys higher on our board.”

I hate it for Nickel. He seems like a good kid and is a legit P5 tight end. That being said, the ceilings on Staes and Raridon are so much higher and ND can’t afford to settle at one of the few position groups where we have as much or more to sell to recruits than Bama, OSU, or Clemson.

I'm sure the staff would like everyone to not call it a force out but they were/are pushing for two additional TE's (with no space for 3, as illustrated above) and probably made that very clear to the young man. In that situation you're not going to stick it out.
