Now tell us how many each of those schools transferred in.

Less than they had transfer out.

ND had 12 out last year and 7 in.

Last year teams that kept the same coach:
Alabama had 21 out and 5 in.
LSU had 21 out and 14 in.
Georgia had 16 out and 4 in.
Ole Miss had 31 out and 15 in.
FSU had 22 out and 12 in.
Oregon had 35 out and 15 in.
Clemson had 12 out and 1 in.
A&M had 31 out and 15 in.
Texas had 20 out and 5 in.
Oklahoma had 25 out and 17 in.

So all the teams brought in significantly less than they lost.

Christian is just reporting on Auburns confidence. Which is they will pay a lot more, he's from Alabama, they will pay a lot more, his girlfriend goes there, and they will pay a lot more.

There is also this nugget out there that Auburn will pay a lot more.
Welllll... Sampson also said on the most recent II podcast that he thinks Leonard is coming here because of $. So if Leonard does come, it's not as simple as $.

But if it is just about $ for Leonard, then Sampson's confidence he's coming to ND is misplaced.

Does Sampson try anymore? Seems like he has built the clout and is happy to be the guy who never says anything dumb, but always late to details of the current events. To me he's just a writer these days (and a good one), not a source of current events.

Im just pointing out Auburns reason. They did this last portal season to. They were rumored to be in on a lot of guys simply because they would pay more.

Sampson dropped the name of the Carolina S&C coach... and also mentioned that he wont be coming to ND. That was the first name I had heard from any source.

Sampson doesn't even do daily 4-5 hour long YT live streams - what's his excuse?

Could also still be about $, just more than the immediate lump sum provided by NIL.

If Auburn pays Riley .5m more, but Riley’s overall prospects are better at ND (better degree if football doesn’t pan out, better shot at playoffs/higher draft pick/more money down the road/etc etc), ND is technically now more $, just long-term.

I’m sure there’s a valuation, and I’d hope we’re providing it to prospective players and families.

O’Malley’s O/U on ND transfer outs was 19.5
Hanson predicted 20 opt outs from ND

They’re expected to less than half that due to incoming freshman class. The key is ND only had so many guys out of eligibility w/ 20+ incoming freshmen.

tbf his agents are probably making him aware hes about to be in a bidding war and there is zero reason to rush his decision

Auburn is a good school, particularly if your plans are to live in the south. He's from Fairhope - nice area outside Mobile. If he wants to stay in the South - depending on his degree I am not sure how much more a Notre Dame degree is worth?

I’d hate to have to deal with these agents. Do the agents have much power. As in does any one agent represent a lot of different players?

Agree with everything here.

Just adding that it will take an incredibly mature young man to sign up for the Buchner/Pyne hypotheticals you’ve described, especially if they believe in themselves/that they can get significant play time elsewhere.

“Hey, stick around and maybe you’ll get some play time if our QB gets hurt, or maybe a few package situations when needed”. Even if we don’t explicitly say this, it’s effectively the message.
Or just recalling what happened to their two former teammates who left b/c we brought in a better transfer.

Yes, each did get a crack at a P5 starting job, but only briefly and then spent the rest of the season on the bench. And now Buchner and Pyne - neither of whom got a degree from Notre Dame - probably have to transfer again to have any shot of playing next year (or ever).

And not for nothing, Buchner and Pyne both had played substantially more actual football when they transferred than Angeli or Minchey have at this point. They had a resume. Angeli and Minchey do not.

For either of Angeli/Minchey to be confident of winning a starting job in ‘24, they probably have to drop down to a G5. Or they’re one snap away from starting for us, and in position to be the guy in ‘25. If a year from now they don’t see a path to playing, there’ll still a portal then.

I get the crazy QB merry-go-round thinking, but for most of these kids it’s a wild goose chase. Stay put, do the work, see what happens.

We don't need to rush the WR coach hire, needs to be the right guy. Not time to overreact and get emotional. People need to calm down

Disagree. You're not hiring a HC/OC/DC, so you don't need to vet to the nth degree, and the portal is open and WRs in it are talking to coaches and teams now, not on our timeline. This isn't the hardest position to hire for.

Yeah, NOPE

The portal for these players close 5 days after their bowl game or Jan 3, which ever is later. There's no time to be waiting around. You rushed to fire a coach now you hire a better one.

We need to get 2 of Wells, Collins, mitchell, maclin. We have about 3-4 weeks to realistically do that. I don't see how we'll get them if we don't have a clear QB and or WR coach in the next week.

Right now ND is doing damage control on offense with 4 WRs hitting portal, and 3 of them were our top 3 snap count wrs.
