Hypothetical Future Valuations based off offseason Portal articles:

High End QB: $3.5 mil+
  • Monds

Most players out of high school are going to be cheaper than players out of the Portal because they've yet to accomplish anything at the college level. Think of the Portal as professional free agency. Those players are almost always overpaid due to their scarcity, combined with the fact that they have proven production at the professional level and can reasonably be expected to perform similarly on the next contract (relative to things like age and injury history).

Think of players coming out of high school as getting the equivalent of competitive entry level contracts, with a promise to re-evaluate those contracts yearly, based on a player's production when they've joined the program and have had the opportunity to contribute. If the player doesn't get a raise that is suitable to them, they then enter free agency (The Portal) to find another team willing to pay what they think they're worth.

I will say this... While what I said above applies generally, some premium high school players (mostly quarterbacks, but not necessarily) are being given free agent valuations coming out of high school. Especially by programs that have to offer well above the competition to win recruiting battles. In most cases, however, high schoolers are still cheaper than Portal additions. Less scarcity and far more unpredictability. There is also the overall numbers aspect. Taking 25+ players in a class requires you to distribute / allocate funds much differently than taking 8-12 players out of the Portal.

Aware of all that, wasn’t suggesting this is their costs out of HS. Was using it as example of what you described, what an alternative equivalent would cost in the future.

For sure. If those players ascend to starter level players, you're costing a lot of the team's budget. Programs are really paying their top 40'ish players the lion's share, plus a handful of freshman that they are essentially paying to wait their turn.

Has there been talk about the projected number of players for the class? If you add Henderson, Sesay, and Parks that gets us to 271 with 20 commits. Good for 11th last year. Assuming the class will be north of 25 players with the new roster limits.

Add in Jones. 247 also broke the class calculator and no longer does the composite because they’re insecure about On3

17 current commits (once Irvin decommits).
If you add Sesay, Parks, Henderson, JJJ, & Igwebuike, that’s 22. Then I think they’re still looking to add 1 more OL (Hopefully Simien), 1 more DT, and 1 more DB (hopefully a safety). I think 25 might be the number this cycle.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just 22-24. They’re going to have a lot more action in the portal next year with all the expected departures

I could see that too. Like Simien would be a cherry on top of the OL class. And if they don’t get him, they’re not losing sleep trying to get someone else on the board.

I think Singer said 24ish. Last year they took a lot because of the championship juice. This year will be smaller but very good. And I still can see a world where they add some guys who pop their senior year or open up their recruitment when a coach gets fired

I think 24 is the target number as well. 17 right now as Irvin is about to flip.

This sounds right. I can also see a world where they continue to evaluate and monitor prospects at WR, TE, DL, and DB (i.e. add a 3rd WR, 2nd TE, 6 total DL, and a DB ifnwe strike out on remaining targets)

I think the "base" is set at approximately 24, however, I expect ND will keep their ears to the ground for potential flip candidates throughout the cycle that fit into the BPA category. They'd probably go as high as 26 if a stud TE, WR, LB or DB wanted to jump on board later in the cycle and the price wasn't outrageous.

I’m glad someone else noticed 247 fucked up the class calculator lol. It’s like impossible to compare year to year now lmao. So insecure. Just be better at scouting!

Driskell recently on his podcasts with Trev has talked about the class possibly being around the 23 to 25 area
