No, you are correct. The specific rule for a defenseless player is a hit to the head or neck area with a helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder with at least one indicator of targeting. There are several indicators but this one definitely applies to the play in question:After I saw the play and heard the rules analyst say, "I'd expect them to call this targeting", I was convinced. Not sure why they didn't call it except the defender didn't launch crown of the helmet into the receiver but I thought a defenseless player with impact to the head/neck area was an auto-target.
They've changed the rules so much, I could be incorrect.
The failure to call an obvious targeting totally changed the outcome of the game. We would be absolutely furious if it happened to Notre Dame. No, you are correct. What's more, the rule states, "when in question, it is a foul," which means if the refs look at the replay and it looks like there is at least one indicator of targeting but they aren't sure they must call targeting. In order for it to not be targeting it must be clear there are no indicators of targeting. The refs definitely blew it on this call.
- Leading with helmet, shoulder, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with forcible contact at the head or neck area
Here's an article that goes over this controversy.
They will be in the Big 10 championship game almost on a yearly basisOregon is going to be back, Phil Knight's $$$ has ensured that they're recruiting / getting transfers at an elite level.
I know it is very, very early but we all know that they are very, very irrational in Tuscaloosa. That being said, if DeBoer churns out a couple more 9-4 seasons, they'll pony up and try to get Lanning again, we would assume.I still think Lanning leaves sooner than people now think. It’s not sustainable to build a D from the portal and he knows it. You can pay HS kids but some just won’t want to go to Oregon in the end. Unless Phil Knight moves Oregon to not the Pacific Northwest, they will have flaws.

I love Christian Gray and think he’s going to come into his own next year or two and be really good but I imagine Ohio State having their way with him.
I think OSU would deservedly be favored by a touchdown against ND, but this OSU team is like every OSU team under Ryan Day — Dow Joneser. Who knows what they will look like in three weeks. They'll probably get theirs. But the key to beating OSU is punching them in the mouth and holding the ball for 40+ minutes.
I don't think the Irish will be favored if they end in the national championship against the Buckeyes, but ND is absolutely equipped to beat them if they do.
This bodes well for Notre Dame. Notre Dame may not get a top 4 slot and sure one less game wouldn’t hurt but I’d rather be 5 than 4 at this point. My only worry two more games basically puts them at almost an NFL schedule. Hope they don’t weather down in game 3 and 4.I've also read that any changes have to be unanimously voted for, so that would require ND, ACC, B12, and whoever else non SEC/B1G to vote against giving four byes.
Someone broke this down on ISD, but with the revenue difference between NBC and Big 10, ND would have to win the title each year to break even. Big 10 has collected $28M so far for playoffs, and splitting it goes both ways. Even if you miss the playoffs you're getting millions. It's a bit more make or break for ND.I know someone mentioned this somewhere on IE yesterday, but man, I forgot the fact that although ND has made $14 million in CFP victory $, ND gets to keep all of it of course as an Independent (vs. conferences splitting it). More $, more $, more $! Notre Dame's $14 Million Playoff Haul Has Everyone Saying the Same Thing
If ND wins a title I guarantee none of that will matter. Their value instantly increases with a title and negotiating another contract with NBC or whoever will see those returns.Someone broke this down on ISD, but with the revenue difference between NBC and Big 10, ND would have to win the title each year to break even. They should give the money to NBC and say do a real product. ESPN's coverage and broadcasting of the 1st round made NBC's look like study hall.If ND wins a title I guarantee none of that will matter. Does that account for the $17 million they get from the ACC for a partial payout?Someone broke this down on ISD, but with the revenue difference between NBC and Big 10, ND would have to win the title each year to break even.
