Both things can be true. That pick 6 was an awful decision....AND Buchner didn't get any help from his OL, Receivers, and OC.
Correct. He deserves another chance but I question his durability. When’s the last time he was available to play a full season?

2019 in high school. It's definitely a concern at this point. I'm still on bringing in a QB and having a competition happen. Personally.
We have to bring in a transfer and hold a competition but I wouldn’t chase off Buchner just yet either.

Was he hurt last season?

For at least a game or two I believe, which is why Pyne came in for Coan during the Wisconsin game.

I agree. Chasing off Buchner is ridiculous. Buchner missed 1 game due to injury last year (Wisconsin).

a transfer? The problem with that is there is not a transfer I know of that is out there that is a big upgrade that is willing to battle. The reason they are transferring is they are basically being given the job or told they are.

The transfer portal QB ND will get isn't in the portal (yet).

So, I was going to write a snarky post about how almost any quarterback currently starting for a P5 (or even decent G5) team would be an upgrade over what we have to offer when Buchner can't play.

Then I looked up QB ratings - which I know are not the end all-be all but still... - and apparently Pyne has a higher QBR than a number of the QBs who've been mentioned in this thread (Van Dyke, McKee, Armstrong), also than Kedon Slovis and Phil Jurkovec.

Wild.

That may be true but Drew has a very good OL, great TE, decent WRs and very good RBs. Put these guys in that situation and their numbers and our win/loss is at worst 7-1. Pyne sucks by any measure and it is pathetic we have no one better than him in the roster. Guy from Purdue I think was a 5th string walk on.

True. I'd love to see Tanner McKee, for instance, at ND next year.

Right but whoever it is will most likely want assurance that they will be the starter. Not have to fight in spring camp
I don’t get why this is just assumed. A number of programs have taken transfer QBs who had to battle to see the field. And I don’t want a QB who looks at Notre Dame’s room and doesn’t think he could win it. If you want to make it to the NFL, why are you afraid of Drew Pyne and an injury-prone kid with hardly any experience?

Heck, Hendon Hooker might win the Heisman, and he transferred to UT at the same time as Joe Milton and UT *went with Milton* to start last season.

Being in Cali screwed him in 2020 taking a complete season away from him that would’ve been against better competition. He tore his ACL in 2018? Missed a little time last season after being banged up. Injured his foot or ankle walking down stairs & now is out for the season after shoulder surgery…luckily his non-throwing arm.

Give him every opportunity next season along w/ Pyne, Angeli & whoever they can secure from the portal. May the best QB win the job.

Yep. This.

Buchner has had a run of bad luck but he's a talented kid, and one who I assume the staff knows better than we do and have a lot of faith in. I don't think you throw away two or three years of Buchner for a one-year rental on a grad transfer who is likely only transferring because he's not good enough to start for his current program. Which is what you'd be doing by promising a transfer the job. Buchner would likely leave.

If you can get a proven, truly elite, transfer QB maybe that's worth it. But barring a Caleb Williams type transfer we need to have a wide open spring competition. Pyne. Buchner. Whatever transfer is willing to come take his shot for the job. May the best QB win.

The problem is his QBR was padded in his first couple starts against UNC and BYU. According to Sampson's article on the Athletic his passer rating for the past 3 games is 114.66 which is not even average, it's bad. Teams now know he can't beat them in drop coverage and they know he will force the ball to Mayer 6 times per game. His rating is going to continue to drop unless they can find him some easier throws.

More importantly it’s what he looks like he does NOT have…tunnel vision
Without rewatching the game I very well could be wrong, but I disagree with the bolded. To me it looked like he locked onto his first read just about every play, the WR just always seemed to create a step (was it Cam Hart every time lol). Granted there were some plays where he was scrambling and might not have had tunnel vision.
To your main point tho, I would also take him and many other options over Pyne lol

He completed fifty percent of his passes, got sacked three times and they lost.

i expect clemson to load the box to stop the run and force drew pyne to win the game.

They will load the box on first and second probably then drop 8 on third, which is the formula.

ND has to get Drew out of the pocket to give him easier throws with just 1 or 2 options. You can't expect him to stand in the pocket and find guys when his linemen are like a foot taller than him, and you can't expect him to hit timing routes on outs or stops because he doesn't have the arm talent.

Rees has to utilize that galaxy brain that the NFL guys supposedly think he has, and scheme up gift-wrapped completions for Drew. That's the only shot unless special teams and defense can score some points.

To be fair his WRs dropped four or five. Maybe he was throwing a smidge behind them or something, but that's fixable and he had a live arm. We must've adjusted or something because he was less effective after awhile but the first few possessions he was in they carved us up.

He looked like what he is. A backup at Syracuse.

He stopped dancing and yapping after the interception. They all did.

I'd tamper with Cam Rising or Devin Leary if Ruggiero doesn't bring Sam Hartman with him..

Or better yet... Max Duggan since Garrett Riley's the next OC...

In all seriousness, Hank Bachmeier's already reached out about joining the Irish next year. Well he probably has, right?

Hard pass on Bachmeier, agree on tampering with Leary or Rising.
