It's pretty crazy how openly the beat guys are talking about the next transfer QB. The II guys seem to already even have their favorites.

I'm going to bet on the field though. I feel like next year's QB isn't even on anyone's radar as a transfer yet. A lot can still shake loose between now and the portal deadline.

Our starting QB next year could well be on the current roster, but after this season’s experience it would be absolutely nuts for us not to seriously pursue a transfer who’d at least compete for the job.
That’s so obvious it seems fine to talk about.

I don’t know much about him, but do we really want a guy that doesn’t have an NFL future? Would he really be better than Buchner?
We don’t really know what we have in Buchner, is kind of the point. You’d at least want a viable alternative.
And while both Coan and Book are “in” the NFL, you wouldn’t say they have an “NFL future,” but they’d both be enormous upgrades from what we have right now. I’ll take a proven college QB in the room any day, even if he doesn’t have serious pro prospects.

It’d be weird if they looked at what little is on the roster and what’s not coming in because the staff failed in recruiting and *didn’t* openly talk about bringing in a transfer QB.

It’s almost a sure bet that next year’s Week 1 starter isn’t on the roster right now. They have to have a QB who can at least complete the layups, and I don’t even see that in Pyne or Buchner.

If ND can find a transfer like we had in Jack Coan last year, get a QB transfer for next year. Can Buchner stay healthy? Is Pyne a true #1 QB? Are the chances of ND flipping a 2023 QB good?

I’ve watched some game film on Buchner and while he hasn’t been awesome in his 6-7 quarters this year he also never had a running game or help from his Oline. Pyne has had every opportunity to show off and while he had a good second half against Cal and pretty nice UNC game he was Ok against BYU but absolutely shot since then. Can count good plays in 12 quarters on one hand. The best I can say about him today was that he made decent decision and only had one int that should have been an easy completion to a wide open huge target. At some point we are going to see more Angeli. No way this little guy gets thru without being knocked out of a game. Kid can take a hit but he stinks. Don’t even want to see him as the backup next year. Tommy and Drew will have several more chances to get their heads out of their asses.

This is probably true.

It’s also true that if Hartman turned the ball over even twice in one game as a ND quarterback that we would have 100 jackasses on here calling for the backup to replace him while also blaming TR.
I’m happy to take part in a friendly wager w/ any takers & bet that Hartmann takes more NFL snaps than Pyne & Buchner combined. Not saying he’s the second coming of (insert NFL QB), just that he can at least stay healthy & complete more than 51% of his passes. Low bar for sure, but ND QBs can’t seem to surpass it.

That said, there’s no way he returns for another years…much less transfers to ND.

We don’t know how good Buchner can be. He was given literally 1.5 seconds to throw in the games he played.

Agreed. I’m not basing it on that but basing it on his health. People throw around the term “injury-prone” too often but I think it fits Buchner. Especially when you add in the foot/ankle injury he sustained while walking down steps. But you’re right regarding this season, he never got a legit chance. That pick six may have been the worst pass of the season though.

Both things can be true. That pick 6 was an awful decision....AND Buchner didn't get any help from his OL, Receivers, and OC.

I’m honestly not sure we ever will. He missed two seasons of HS football, nearly a full season of college and he plays a style that lends himself to more injuries.

At some point, it’s just too late for a kid - especially as a position like QB where experience is huge.

OTOH, Buchner is basically a redshirt freshman. He has three years of eligibility remaining. He has played more college snaps than Book had by this point in his career.

Is it his style of play or just the way Tommy has used him? He's a talented player and has a skill set we haven't had in a long time at qb. It's ultimately up to the coaching staff to put him in position to succeed. I believe with a different OC he will be successful.
