#15... Don't lose to Louisville and we are sitting at #6 or #7.

Being from Ohio, I am absolutely disgusted seeing the Buckeyes at #1.

What really sucks is that although we have issues we are tremendously better than 15 and CFP committee gave us zero respect.
Eh, we’re the second highest rated 2 loss team and directly after LSU. I wouldn’t call that disrespectful, it looks more like the committee didn’t want to ran 2 loss teams above 1 loss teams for now.

I have major issues with them focusing on "number of losses" instead of strength of schedule. Michigan gets zero penalty for playing the softest schedule on earth. The best team that they've played is Rutgers. They have a SOS outside of the top 100. I don't understand how you have them above FSU or Washington, I really don't.

What the committee did was group up the undefeated teams -> group up the one loss teams -> group up the two loss teams. And then within those groups they sorted by quality wins / SOS... except for Michigan, which just gets "eye test" or some shit. That's a really dumb methodology that incentivizes playing a soft schedule. And if definitely needs to be fixed before we go to a 12 team playoff or the sport will become even more about playing the easiest schedule that you possibly can.

If this were the final rankings, I’d agree. But it’s pretty clear a lot of these will sort themselves out over the final month of the season as a bunch of these teams play each other. If Michigan gets through Penn State and Ohoo State intact, it’s schedule looks a lot better (though it probably should stay out of #1 for a weak ass OoC schedule).

E. I guess the perennial question is why even bother with mid season rankings here other than media hype but it’s a business and media hype is money so that kind of answers that.

It's annoying. We probably should be higher. But also most of the teams ranked between us and the Top 10 have a very likely loss in the next few weeks. Win out and barring utter mayhem we make an NY6.

It is what it is. This is the results you get when you don’t play and finish the way you are supposed too.

Just keep playing hard and finish the year strong!

Based off current standings:

Orange: #8 Alabama vs. #13 Louisville
Fiesta: #5 Washington vs. #7 Texas
Cotton: #6 Oregon vs. #9 Oklahoma
Peach: #24 Tulane vs. #10 Ole Miss

Fiesta and Cotton could swap teams/matchups.

Gotta make it to 10, 11 if Louisville ends up staying ahead of us the whole time. Passing Louisville won't make much of a difference since they will take the ACC Orange Bowl spot regardless if FSU is in the playoffs. So let's root for LSU, Penn State, Mizzou and Ole Miss to lose. Could all happen in the next 2 weeks. Don't really want to see Kansas State beat Texas this week for fear of both teams being ahead of us. Mizzou beating Georgia would cause some chaos. Don't want to see Oklahoma State beat OU either (although they lost to South Alabama). Bama beating LSU would be good too.

It is very much in our interest for Georgia to be as good as advertised. They could beat three of the teams ahead of us.

Thanks. I should probably get with the times and use Twitter, lol. Wild, I use to hate the BCS but this seems so much more accurate. Lots left to play out and a shame we dropped two games that we shouldn't have.

Honest question - is this really a surprise?

It’s felt this way to me for a few years now; wins and losses reign more supreme than SoS. It’s often better to be 12-0 than 11-1, even if the 11-1 schedule includes a few ranked wins and a quality loss. Same for other schools - just get to the conference championship and you have a real shot at playoffs.

There’s of course a limit to this (UCF years ago), but if you’re a blue blood, your strong record will basically be rewarded regardless of who you faced.

I absolutely love ND’s schedule in terms of national reach and watchability, but the reality is that it will hinder us in future years if the mark is reaching playoffs. It just makes things tougher than it has to be.

Totally agree. Also just pointing out that when our schedule consists of the gauntlet that is OSU, Duke, Louisville, USC, Clemson, etc, it’s highly likely that at the end of the year we’re left pointing to “if it weren’t for a loss to…”

Not sure what the fix here is, if any. Would’ve loved to have played Michigans schedule lol. Not sure if they’re frauds, but I think even Michigan would’ve picked up a loss or two along the way if they played our schedule.

Honestly, it's the best for me to get up to date news on college football... follow only ND stuff, recruits committed and the enemy sites of Michigan and usc along with national sites... quick to check

The fix this year would have been to have a back loaded schedule, but that’s hard to have since everyone else is in a conference. I hate effectively drawing dead now, unable to garner any statement wins to generate a buzz

They are where they are because of one loss. If both lose a second time, I can seen them dropping behind us. Losses late in the season seem to have more impact than early season losses as the committee is left wondering if that team is headed in the wrong direction. For instance if OU loses again, their two losses are later in the season. Texas might be a little trickier since they are at #7. A blowout of Clemson would help us immensely.

Honestly now that ND has lost its playing Div1AA cherry, make the weakest schedule ever. Everyone says we play a weak schedule now go out and just do it. Sucks for ticket buyers but who cares. If the goal is to win the Natty, outside of USC, schedule bullshit week in and week out.

It doesn't matter where Michigan is ranked. Skunkbear could be 5 and beat OSU and they move way up. They can be 1 and lose to OSU and drop out of the playoff. If they are undefeated, they get in the Playoff. If they have one loss, it's a late season loss - they drop to the middle of the one loss teams - they are out.

This didn't work in reverse last season when OSU lost to Michigan....

Yearly reminder:

Don’t let the early rankings bother you. The committee has proven that they’re just driving ratings and conversation until the final rankings. Their early rankings are just an “exercise,” and mean jack shit.

Their common sense suddenly gets WAY better after conference championships are played, and it’s not just because they have a full set of data at that point.

There are years of evidence now where the committee chair spends weeks propping up certain teams, and/or holding back others, while ignoring on-field results, SOS, or head-to-head for random reasons that are contradictory not just week-to-week, but team-to-team in their own rankings.

Then suddenly, with all of the data in front of them, they generally slot teams in just about where they should be, including flip-flopping obvious ranking errors and totally contradicting their own process… which ends up with them getting it mostly right, because common sense.

Drama and ratings!

Add to this: Yearly reminder to not even watch the rankings. It's a pointless soap opera that allows talking heads blow hot air at the camera for an hour.

The NCAA Basketball committee doesn't release "weekly rankings" starting in January, because it's all bullshit.

Yup, it's clearly obvious that strength of schedule meant nothing in those first rankings. LSU should not be ahead of us, we've got one more ranked win than they do and we've played tougher opponents. Missouri, Louisville, and possibly Ole Miss don't belong ahead either, but I'd give the not to Ole Miss simply because they're a spot ahead of us on the AP and Coaches polls. 12th is actually pretty fair, I think the AP and Coaches have it right.

If we can find a QB (either through Steve/Minchey stepping up, or portal), I have to imagine ND should be favored to make playoffs next year with this schedule.

Especially if we make a steady push to convince fringe NFL guys to come back for one more year.
