I think because of the poor angles and the countless missed tackles.
He has the highest tackling efficiency on the team.
And the games he missed for injury or targeting were ND’s statistically worse tackling performances.
He also sets the Defense.
It’s crazy that Clark Lea, Marcus Freeman & Al Golden all talk about how good he is a give media members shocked face looks when people question Bertrand…but fans think he stinks.
Bertrand is good. Prister, Sampson, O’Malley, Driskell, Roberts, all talk about it weekly, how wrong people are about Bertrand.

He played 2021 with a cast on one hand too

Bertrand is really good at tackling 8 yards down the field. There was an off season comparison to Georgia LBs where the tackles amongst the ND group was comparable, maybe even better, I can't recall. But when you looked at havoc plays it was like 49 to 3, Georgia. Hoping Bertrand has a good year and tries his chance in the league. The younger LBs are too talented to sit for two years to him and Kizer.

Wasn’t he playing injured for a time? Broken hand or something. Bertrand is a blessing, faster more aggressive Joe Schmidt. He wasn’t highly recruited by the home teams and that’s ok, their loss.

I think most of the Bertrand hate stems from 2021 when he was required to play way too many snaps. He was improved last year with a more balance snap count. And I bet he’ll be even better this year with the, seemingly, 3 for 2 situation they’ll have at ILB.

People need to realize (as has been stated many times) this is year two of a new defense. If it’s worse this year it’s on the coaches. Let’s just see what they can do before we right them off. I’ll side on much improved until proven otherwise.

Yeah the whole 21 season with a broken hand or torn ligament in his wrist.

8 yards is a ridiculous exaggeration.
And it’s easy to make tackles at the LOS when your DL pushes the OL a yard back (like UGA’s) compared to ND’s getting pushed a yard back into the LBs.

This article from Pete boils down to Freeman plotting to blow teams out so badly that Angeli can play and actually run the full offense, because it’s not just handing the ball off for half of the fourth quarter.

Also a lot of “we structured camp to get a bunch of freshman started on their development NOW.”

We asked for a guy that would improve upon BK’s shortfalls. Freeman keeps checking these boxes in how he would *like* to do things… but now it’s gotta actually work on the field.

JD Bertrand is a quality linebacker for Notre Dame. He’s not a Butkus Award winner, but he’s far better than some other linebackers that they have fielded as well.

This is a good read on the amount of snaps he had to play in 2021 and how it affected his production as the season wore on.

Crazy to think that he played 81 snaps vs Purdue. And, 513 snaps over the first 8 games. Woof. For an ILB that’s having to bang inside and then cover downfield (which is what they asked of him at times), that’s rough.

I got really really angry at him last year after the targets. I called for him to be suspended. I still partially agree with myself, it was reckless and dangerous and cost the team. I think if it had been anyone else from any other team, we would have been calling for his suspension too if he did that playing against ND.

But my reaction was also biased by a roller coaster of an emotional season. He's a good guy and a quality LB. His teammates think so too.

That was the only issue I had with him.

It pretty much comes down to JD being a good LB, but fans are always looking for better.

JD is the Ian Book of LB's. He's done well to maximize his potential, but his potential isn't that of Nolan Smith or Fred Warner. He's, as some have said, a better Joe Schmidt. He's a great captain and QB of the defense, but he isn't going to wow you with his physical prowess and he isn't going to create insane levels of havoc plays. That's fine if you have guys like Marist, Botelho and Sneed doing it for him. We need to hope that happens and I'm confident it will.
