It still boggles my mind that ND can't get a stud QB. It's like being the QB for the Dallas Cowboys.

Anyone have an idea of any players in the portal ND is recruiting? Also any new names being thrown around for class of 22?

We usually don't hear about portal news unless someone is visiting.

There's been nothing officially reported.

I think Jack Coan announced he was transferring ND less than a week before the start of the Winter Semester.

Would be save to assume that that could be the case again this year. Or a winter semester addition may not be the staff's focus unless they identity someone as a FIVE STAR type of prospect. We could have a lot of fifth or even potentially sixth year seniors, so the scholarship limit could be stressed to the limit. Generally, spring practice gives you some attrition and shows where the weaknesses are in a roster.

It made sense to pounce on Coan quickly last year because we had nothing at QB with any sort of experience whatsoever.

As for players that they could target, it helps to look for players that the staff could be familiar with from recruiting. And then, because we have a new DC coordinator this season, any player from UC could be an option, as well as any player Freeman could be familiar with that DIDNT commit to UC. I mean there's just so many variables that it may be wasted energy to speculate anything further than just what is at surface level.

One player I've seen with some sort of close past connection to ND is Donte Burton, former CB for Wisconsin.

From his profile, he was big on ND and wanted to commit but he didn't have a committable offer, as he was more of a plan B. We were looking at bigger fish in the 2018 recruiting cycle (Kyler Gordon, UW) comes to mind. He committed to Wiscy in September, and we saved ourselves from striking out by inking Houston Griffith in December before NSD, than I believe, all three of Noah Boykin, Tariq Bracy and D. J. Brown in Jan/Feb 2018.

Back to Burton..

He did start a few games for Wisconsin, even had a pick this season.

But maybe we don't take a DB. With the incoming class, and Bracy and D. J. Brown's return, we will have alot of scholarships (17 by my count) on two positions.

I could see the staff looking for a safety, or two, in the portal. I don’t think they’ll look for a corner. I actually think corners would be a strength next year. Everyone is returning.

I would imagine depending on the WR situation you could see someone added to that group from the portal.

BK has screwed PSU over by flipping jarron jones, will fuller and brandon wimbush. but man i'd love to have both allar or singleton.

FWIW, at least they’re going somewhere where they’ll be completely irrelevant to Notre Dame and its potential success. Penn State will never be anything more than the third or fourth-best team in its division of the Big Ten under Franklin.

I was listening to Singer the other day and he said that there are a couple more new names that ND is recruiting and/or trying to flip.

Who were the names? I wish we'd revisit Major Everhart and Joseph Griffin Jr, especially if we have any offensive decommits.

I said it half joking months ago but seriously may need some over recruited DBs to switch to receiver instead of the opposite like we've seen in the past.

So basically one hire has caused this class to fall apart?

Williams and Walker were wavering weeks before Riley ever got hired. The class isn’t falling completely apart but there’s a very real possibility that only one of our receivers sticks. That is a massive fuckup

Jojo looked like a capable WR prospect in HS

I watched him play a few times in HS and he was a playmaker on offense, for sure. He didn't make as many plays on defense but it was basically bc he shut down his side of the field and was rarely challenged. I know his HS coach and he said he's a team player who works hard so I'm guessing he would be willing to make the change.

He's really shifty and quick and that stood out more than his speed in HS, so slot would probably be the best fit for him on offense. I'm not suggesting he's slow, I just really couldn't tell you if he has the explosive elite speed needed to play corner at a high level, and blowing out his knee this year doesn't help. IMO, he has enough speed and quickness to make some plays in the slot. Jamie at ISD mentioned he was making quite a few plays on defense before the injury which was a pleasant surprise coming from a late commit 3 star.

Hopefully he can get on the field and contribute wherever that may be.

Edit: Sorry I never posted when I quoted this. Today was a little busy, lol. When I intended to post on this it was only CJ that was A possible casualty of the Riley hire.

Walker is more like months. He was always going to be very difficult to hold on to by even the best recruiters. Louisiana isn't exactly ND friendly even though highly Catholic. Then of course you have his Dad pushing Michigan.

Williams is looking more and more like he was looking for reasons to stay in Cali. He might have not ended up here no matter who USC hired.

I don’t think the whole class is screwed if they keep Freeman. I’d bet he keeps the defensive side of the ball together but I’m less sure on offense. The offense was in a bit of a pickle as is. My depend on how quickly they react to this news and what the news ultimately is.

Defensive class would stick together IMO. Offense would lose some. I've seen Tanona, Raridon, and Ziegler all affirm they would stick no matter what.

Hire Brian Hartline and watch the WR recruits come in waves. Occam's Razor.

Part of my hesitation with just naming Freeman full time HC is what else would need to get done. If Hartline as OC was part of that and I can sign on for that now, then I’d do it.

You would think that would be an option too. I would imagine if Hartline ever happened, Tate and Moore come into the fold quickly.

Worth noting… Mike Elston was with BK the whole ride. It wouldn’t be far fetched to see him either follow BK and be named DC, or take a head coaching gig. Akron, UMASS and VT (unlikely) are all open jobs.

losing Elston would be a huge hit to the defense.
