Worth noting… Mike Elston was with BK the whole ride. It wouldn’t be far fetched to see him either follow BK and be named DC, or take a head coaching gig. Akron, UMASS and VT (unlikely) are all open jobs.

losing Elston would be a huge hit to the defense.

UMass is not open. Donny Brown agreed to take on that mess. Elston might not want to go with Kelly seeing as how Kelly already passed him up for Freeman last year and no doubt would do it again. Kelly is gonna be under the gun to win immediately at L$U, and Elston isn’t the splash D Co hire that will make it rain 5 stars like A&M.

Elston stays with ND i bet no matter what happens. Look at his social media and his wife's. They LOVE ND, their kids are into fencing and ND has the best fencing program in the nation.

Combining a couple thoughts here, my first choice if Freeman gets the nod would be Elston to DC and back up the Brinks truck at Hartline's door to be the OC.

Rees may be in the process of becoming something special, but Hartline and Freeman would give us 2 top-10 national recruiters. And Elston's recruiting and development are excellent IMO.

Will probably need an older former head coach in there somewhere to help Freeman learn the in's and out's and not be bogged down by the demands of being a first-time HC.

To oversimplify a clearly nuanced issue and pull an old coaching adage: Jimmy's and Joe's > X's and O's

How so? I'm really interested in this line of thinking.

So many people railed on Kelly but now that he's gone, he was the one thing holding it all together?

Did you not listen to anything Jack just said. He is in no rush to hire someone. You can say bye bye to the recruiting class for '22 and 23' and not to mention anyone else that transfers.

not being in a rush and not getting something done timely arent the same thing

We could have a new HC named within a week, all be happy with the decision. (not saying i expect this timeline) just that because we don thave one today and him saying we wont rush doesnt mean thigns have to be chicken little.

This is incomplete, panic-induced thinking. They are going to vet a lot of candidates and make the best hire. We are probably going to lose some recruits, we may gain some as well. We haven't had to deal with this in 11 years.

We got a bunch of Bruce Heggie's incoming?

already reported hes trying

How many assistants Kelly brings with him is much more important than Kelly leaving, IMO. Like, I'd much rather have a hypothetical scenario where Kelly goes but Rees, Freeman, Elston, Balis, and Bowden stay than a hypothetical scenario where there's a 50% chance Kelly had stayed but a 50% chance he brings everyone with him to LSU.

It's being reported that an assistant strength coach is going with Kelly, which would hopefully mean Balis stays. The players and former players are pushing HARD for ND to keep him at any cost.

Look at what is happening to OU right now. Their roster is disintegrating. Mass decommits from their '22 and '23 classes already.

Kelly just did the same thing to us that Riley did to OU. We cannot let that happen to ND, and time is of the essence in preventing it. "Vetting a lot of candidates" pushes our hire out beyond signing day and bowl season, which gives our enemies more than enough time to poach our best coaches, players and recruits.

Going to be the first on many. I expect us to lose over half the class if Freeman isn’t promoted.

This is why you don't let these kids hold your coaching search hostage.

at least we are in better shape then oklahoma. they are moving to the SEC with no coach, a one time Heisman candidate hits the transfer portal and i wonder if caleb williams follows riley to USC.

We have all been critical of the staff at one time or another but the deserve a standing ovation for the stop gap they have provided over the last 3 days. I know they might not all stay but they have done a great job not letting this explode so far!

With all the momentum here and social media, we think any 2022 surprises join the class? Brown come back?

Caleb Williams would be a game changer for USC, no doubt. Probably wouldn't effect Malachi Nelson but then there's Slovis, Dart and Miller Moss. Can't see more than one of those guys sticking around to compete with Williams. And they won't get the other kid from Utah who just decommitted so if we are looking for a QB in the portal or otherwise there's some options here.

We might as well resign ourselves to USC having a superstar at QB as long as Riley is there. Doesn't mean we can't beat them, but its going to be 42-40 type games in all probability.

He might be heading to Georgia. Rumor is he didn't love how Riley left and he just started following a bunch of UGA coaches.

man OU better land themselves a top notch coach otherwise i wonder if they could even right the ship while playing in the sec.
