Michael Lockhart

First Power 5 offer on December 23. Kid is blowing up. 6'5'' 250lb SDE/3T for ND. Power 5 offers since December 23:
Colorado, Nebraska, TCU, Iowa, UNC, Virginia, Kansas, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, Syracuse, Mississippi St, and Baylor.

Why? I feel like this is a wasted scholarship. They should have taken Briggs when they had the chance.

First year playing football. That explains all of the late action.

https://www.al.com/sports/2019/01/how-did-alabama-hs-d-lineman-go-from-unknown-to-multiple-power-5-offers.html

A year ago, Huffman’s Michael Lockhart had never played in a high school football game.

This weekend, the 6-foot-5, 250-pound defensive lineman is making an official visit to North Carolina and more than half a dozen Power 5 schools -- including Nebraska, TCU, Kansas, Iowa and Virginia --- have extended football scholarship offers.

"Football recruiting definitely has been life-changing," Lockhart said. "I never expected anything like this. This is going to be one of the toughest decisions in my life."

Lockhart has emerged as of one of the Deep South’s most intriguing late-rising prospects, thanks to a combination of so many prospects signing during college football’s early signing period in December and Lockhart’s anonymity after playing football only as a high school senior.

Until 2018, Lockhart played basketball exclusively, but major offers never came. That prompted him to finally give football a try. "We've been trying to get him to play since his sophomore year," Huffman football coach Alex Wilson said.

Lockhart excelled as a defensive lineman in 2018, logging 37 tackles, including 10 for a loss, and four sacks while also moonlighting as a tight end.

"He has size and speed," Wilson said. "You can't teach that."

Lockhart initially committed to UAB, which at the time was his only offer, but later decommitted and chose not to sign in December. He’s been flooded with offers in the last month and said he’s also received contact, but no offers, from Oregon, Notre Dame, Mississippi State and UCLA.

Neither Alabama nor Auburn has shown interest, and Wilson said he's no longer seriously considering UAB.

"He's a diamond in the rough," Ward said. "Mike is as strong as an ox. I'm not sure he realizes how strong he is, but he's starting to."

What did Lockhart think of his first season of football? "I fell in love with it," he said.

In separate interviews, Wilson and Huffman basketball coach Steve Ward said they're "not surprised" by Lockhart's recruiting rise.

Have you watched his tape or read up on him? They are different players. He's a 6'4 edge defender who could grow into a 3T. Where Briggs is a 6'1-2 DT only. And again, ND isn't the only school to pass on Briggs.

The question for me is, where was the free scholly if they're offering another 2019 kid?

I know they are different positions, but if ND goes after a new player I would be pissed if I'm Bertrand. Only way that it would be somewhat understandable is if Foskey fell through.

could be coming from a medical we aren't aware of, but also saw a snippet regarding asa and said he still isn't any closer to a decision so that could be it...have NO idea if it is that, just a thought

I saw him getting interest from ND coaches a while back and didn't think much of it. He didn't have a ton of offers so I thought maybe PWO, but it didn't look like he had the grades for that. But hearing that its his first year playing football really changes that for me. He looks raw, like really raw, but he also seems to have good football instincts and a nose for the ball to go with good athletic ability. If we have an extra scholarship open (maybe from Boykin leaving?) I would love to take him, but I'm also not going to be super upset if we miss on him.

I'm wondering how much of it might be this. I get the feeling that ND will take Turner but not sure how much they are really pushing for him. I think they were prior to ESP but that might have cooled some, but that's just some vague tea reading on my part.

Also, if they deem this kid can play or will be able to in the future. SDE is the biggest need on this defense beyond 2019. You can either add 2 in this class or 2 in the next. Adding 2 in this class gives them an extra year to develop that player prior to the 2020 season.

The only source for the claim that ND is close to offering is the kid himself. Even the Gug response seems diplomatic.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a kid trying to generate interest from other programs. Mississippi State, North Carolina, Colorado, Nebraska, Cincinnati, those are all solid landing spots but also firmly a step below ND.

Crazy if they offer Lockhart when they could go after a kid like Smith Vilbert, Howard Cross's teammate. Gotta trust the coaches I guess.

Liufau and Rutherford having big days per Brandon Huffman at 247.

This kid is another German player who had gotten a bunch of good offers recently and just got followed by Elston. Like Lockhart he seems to be a raw, athletic guy. I wonder if the staff knows they are going to have another spot open on the line they didn't know they were going to have.

They need a freaking NG IMO. No way Franklin is ready for the season. I think he is going to medical redshirt because that injury is rough. Unless they are going to a DL with 2, 3 tech guys in the absence of a nose. What is the depth at NG? Hinish and Lacey. If either gets hurt there is no NG dpeth at all.

If you consider MTA could move over if needed, that is another body... It takes one away from 3T but they have parts to play with. Depth is not ideal but I am not as concerned with DT/NT.

I am by no means a doctor. But, as recent as January 2nd, ISD had an article with Ja'Mion where he stated the goal is to be on the field for non-contact in the Spring. That leaves a little over 4 months from the end of Spring to the start of the season and 6 months from when we travel to take on UM. Unless there are some setbacks, I don't think that it's unreasonable to assume he'll play in some capacity this season.

I work at a hospital and asked a few docs in sports med what they think and they said it is possible if he has adrian Peterson like recovery

So, he'd have to have an Adrian Peterson like recovery in order for the timeline from start to finish to be in the 12-15 month range?

Probably who Elston would see if he’s out in Germany to see Ehrensberger. Question would be is he better than Jowon Briggs, Mazi Smith, and Rodas Johnson? Never seen him play so I’m curious how good he could be.

He's a specimen. Way more athletic than those 3 when you consider how much taller/longer he is than them. Go watch his film. He's a college SDE playing DT right now.

All the Ghana boys!

I have been of the opinion that ND needs one more DT, specifically nose and I think this would be an awesome pick up. As a side note I know Penn State wants him but he doesn't love them as much. Also said he was very smart, almost too smart for PSU.

He won't be playing NT and I'm not sure how much he could help out come Sept. 2nd at 3T. I really like the long term upside but not sure this really helps our functional depth for 2019. I think Cross is probably more ready to help than Joseph.

Interesting story. Peyton Machota visited/camped at ND 3-4 times. Obviously wanted to be at ND. I thought for the longest he may be a PWO candidate because the offers just weren't rolling in. He had an Army offer and a UTEP or UTSA offer to finish his Sr. year. Then after the season, UMass, Tulane and Wyoming offered. He then visited Miami, they offered, he committed. Good for him. Had one hell of a Sr. year btw.

It’s too bad ND doesn’t play Miami for the next 5 seasons. People are really pumped to have Manny Diaz in charge. He’s brought a lot of excitement back to the program. Tate Martell, Asa Martin, KJ Osborn from Buffalo, Tommy Kennedy from Butler, Chigozie Nnoruka from UCLA, and Bubba Bolden all added from the transfer portal. Also might bring in Trevon Hill from VT and Jaelan Phillips from UCLA. Now have to see their offense improve, but QB and OL have been their problems and they’ve got a full room of 5 scholly QB’s now (RS SO Tate Martell, RS SO N’Kosi Perry, RS SO Cade Weldon, RS FR Jarren Williams, FR Peyton Matocha) and Dan Enos seems like a good guy to lead them.

I think they will be terrible again this year
