GOP fears rise over West Virginia Senate fiasco
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/04/17/west-virginia-senate-blankenship-republicans-530492
Senate Republicans are escalating their attacks on West Virginia Senate GOP candidate Don Blankenship, increasingly worried that the coal baron and ex-prisoner will blow a winnable race against Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin.

Republicans see West Virginia as a prime pickup opportunity in November, given President Donald Trump’s huge popularity there. But they say the multimillionaire Blankenship, running in a tight three-way primary against Rep. Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, is indefensible as a candidate after serving a year in prison for conspiring to violate mine safety violations. Twenty-nine miners died at his company’s Upper Big Branch mine in 2010.

“Wasn’t he convicted of a crime?” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn of Texas said in an interview Tuesday. “That sort of background doesn’t lend itself to public office, in my view. Being convicted of a crime is a real liability

Officially, Senate Republicans aren’t intervening in the race out of fear it would aid Blankenship's bid to portray himself as an outsider taking on the corrupt establishment. But privately, Blankenship is a hot topic among GOP leaders.

“It’s kind of wild out there. I don’t think he will [win]. I certainly hope one of the other candidates does, because I think he would be obviously a challenged candidate going into the fall,” said Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, the No. 3 GOP leader.

On Monday, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a McConnell ally, met with a small group of donors in New York City. She described the primary as extremely close for candidates Blankenship, Jenkins, and Morrisey. And, according to one person who was present, she said that Republicans were concerned that should Blankenship win the nomination, Manchin would walk over him in a general election.

Trump lately appeared with Jenkins and Morrisey at his side.

Blankenship compares McConnell to 'the Russians' for 'interfering' in W.Va. primary
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaig...onnell-to-the-russians-for-interfering-in-wva
West Virginia Senate candidate Don Blankenship is upping his rhetorical war with Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), comparing him to “the Russians” and calling him the "Swamp captain."

"The Russians and McConnell should both stop interfering with elections outside their jurisdictions," Blankenship, one of multiple Republicans challenging Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said in a statement on Monday about "D.C. swamp creatures."

He added that McConnell "should not be in the U.S. Senate, let alone be the Republican Majority Leader. He is a Swamp captain. He does not understand that it is past time for Congress to put our country above politics and self-interest."

I'm not buying that Manchin would roll Blankenship in a general. Not in West Virginia anyway.

Dems flip a state seat in NY held by GOP for 40 years.

Dems lost the always reliably red AZ08 by 5 points. Trump took it by 21 points in 2016. Also there was a report that some 140000 new voters registration cards were never mailed via a reported computer glitch.

I've now seen a few commercials for those running for Rep in my district here in PA. The Republican ads are all the same: 2nd Amendment! Pro-Life! Kick out those illegals! Build a wall!!! It blows my god damn mind that this is what these guys are fucking running on! How about the fact that this area is in economic shambles? How about education? How about the fucking opioid epidemic???? Instead these guys are spouting the same shitty rhetoric as Trump, and his followers. I know, I know, it's for the Republican primary, but serious. Just really grinds my gears...

It's the same thing they've always run on. Why would this election be any different? It's not like this administration has raised the bar on intelligence and pragmatism.

Yeahhh, but even so, jobs. Jobs Jobs Jobs are a killer in this area. You could get the same base excited if you discussed stirring up our economy. Sad

How a federal lawsuit could open the door to online voter registration in Texas
Texas is one of just a handful of states that doesn't offer online voter registration. Advocates are hoping a recent ruling from a federal judge could change that.

An outlier
Thirty-seven states already offer online voter registration; neighboring Oklahoma, which is in the process of implementing online registration, will be the 38th. Big states, small states, red states and blue states all make the option available. And voting rights experts say it’s hardly a new phenomenon, much less a contentious one.

“There was a time when online voter registration was something new and people had differing views on its applicability,” said Jonathan Brater, a lawyer with the nonpartisan Brennan Center for Justice. “At this point it’s really become the norm. It’s not something that should be a controversial reform.”

The issue of online voter registration came back into focus this year with Garcia’s May 10 ruling on a 2016 case alleging that Texas is violating the decades-old national voting rights law. Texans can already register in person at Department of Public Safety offices, but not when they renew their licenses online.

The state's "excuse for noncompliance" — including purported technological difficulties associated with online voter registration — "is not supported by the facts or the law," Garcia wrote last week in a 61-page opinion, giving the state until Thursday to propose a detailed fix for the system.

Last year alone, federal judges ruled the state violated the voting rights of its residents in redrawing the state’s political maps, through voter identification requirements and by enforcing restrictions on language interpreters at the polls. (An appeals court recently upheld the state's current voter ID law.) Against that backdrop, the failure to allow people to register to vote online seems “part and parcel” with the state’s broader efforts to suppress voting, Stevens added.

As I recall, this was a big reason why Tammy Duckworth lost in 2006 and also part of what Jon Ossoff had going against him last year. Among other things.

Rahm Emmanuel dropped a ton of money into Duckworth's race in 2006 and she lost by a point. The lines in IL got drawn over (gerrymandered) and Duckworth ran against Joe Walsh (he's in this thread), and she destroyed him.

R's have gained ground recently mainly due to the economy being perceived as good even though gas prices and many tells are worsening. The Blue Wave looks tentative at this point

McGrath, a Progressive in KY 6th defeated the DCCC candidate and Lexington Mayor in the Dem primary. Neat story. McGrath wanted to be a fighter pilot. Mitch McConnell told her she should not become one when she was 13. She did anyway and is now retired military fighter pilot. She benefitted from a large rural turnout.

These are the kind of candidates Democrats need. People who come across as bad asses and winners... not faux victims, professional activists, and complainers.

Like contrast her with Elizabeth Warren... they might share identical policy positions for all I know, but I guarantee a veteran is 100x more electable in a general election than someone perceived to be a fake Native American.

Definitely agree with vets. I would like to see more scientists and engineers in government but, that seems like a pipe dream.

Its fine, really. For every scientist/engineer too smart to play politics, we have a Donald Trump or Al Franken eager to do it.

Judge Strikes Down Kansas Voter Law, Orders Sec. of State Kobach to Take Classes (Governing)
-- Other judicial decisions on state voter Id laws linked

Hopefully at some point this get it's day with the Supreme Court. While the Judge accused the defense of cherry picking, she ignored the evidence of clear voter fraud (voter rolls included non citizens, in some districts, up to 3% confirmed based on jury duty selection). If it's that high in a state like Kansas, just imagine what it could be in liberal majority states.

I bet Bush wish he had that pick back...
