With the 41st pick of the 2017 IE Mock Draft, the Cincinnati Bengals select:
Adoree' Jackson, CB, USC
This is a little bit of a reach here, but we don't like any of the WR's still available for this spot. Curtis Samuel is ranked highly, but he's the same player as Tyler Boyd, who the Bengals grabbed last year. They want a ready-made outside receiver to go opposite AJ Green, and it's a big reach for any of those at this point.
We thought about Evan Engram, but if we were going to grab a pass-catching TE, it was going to be Njoku, but he was stolen out from under us.
That leaves us to look at the next big need, which is CB. The Bengals actually have great numbers at CB with Adam Jones, Dre Kirkpatrick, Darquez Dennard, William Jackson III, and KeiVarae Russell... But only Kirkpatrick and Jackson III have sure futures in Cincy. Jones is old (and super fucking dumb) and Dennard hasn't developed like they thought he would (though he's got time to prove himself this season). They have high hopes for how Russell played to end last season, but he's no sure-thing, either.
That makes grabbing a 6th CB reasonable here, as long as there is some added versatility... which Jackson has is spades, as a return man on both kicks and punts.
This pick addresses a CB need a year early, but it makes sense for the value and versatility, even though other teams might see it as a reach.
In 2018, the Bengals could be rolling out Kirkpatrick, Jackson III, and Jackson as their top-3 CB's, with Russell as a special-teamer and quality Dime corner. That's one enforcer, one lock-down guy, and two athletic freaks. That's a nice mix.
