I think he's giving Studstill reps because he's smart enough, we don't have a back up FS so whoever is, needs to practice with the 1s (if Tommy Rees was our 2nd string FS, he'd be getting 1st team reps in the spring too), and to motivate Max. There's no chance Max doesn't start at safety. He may get pulled if he sucks and Studstill will play cause he's the backup, but I'll eat my foot if Max doesn't start at safety to begin the year.

I'm not willing to bet my appendages that DS starts and Max is a two. I'm just saying that Devin isn't getting reps at the 1 just to motivate Max or just to get him prepared as a backup. I truly believe they're looking at him as a legitimate starter this year at the position.

Taken from DS's thread:

However, Kelly said Studstill has been running with the first team much of the past week at free safety, meaning he’s in direct competition with Redfield for a starting job.
Unlike Redfield, who often frustrated with the coaching staff the past three years, Studstill appears to have won over the coaches immediately.
“He’s just a natural player. It comes easy to him,” Kelly said. “Just flows easily to him. It’s not hard to him. He’s had no set back in terms of the learning curve. He had one mistake today, but it really comes easy to him.”

They might be, I'm just saying the 2nd teamer is inevitably going to play with the 1s at times in spring. I do hope he's good enough to unseat Max this year, but I just don't see it. For as many missteps as Max has had, he's in his 4th year and 3rd? year as a starter, and probably with NFL aspirations. He's as talented as anyone on the team and he has the experience in a confusing system much more than Studstill.

Again, I hope Studstill pushes him and if he starts, we have one hell of a 2 deep at safety. I just don't see Max starting on the bench.

I don't buy it. Max will be the starter.

DS will get a lot of playing time this season though, no doubt.

This is where I'm at. Regardless, it's great for both of them that Max is being pushed to the limit and Studstill is already capable of doing so. If this is actually a competition in mid August, we have a better situation at safety than we thought.

SS is a wild card. Never say Sebastian take a snap and he's my height. Love Tranquill but obviously he needs to stay healthy. Our DBs are going to be really good IMO if healthy.

I'm not going to argue that DS will start over Max, day one. But I will say that the only reason Max got as much playing time as he did the last two year's was because of lack of depth. The coaches are sick and tired of not being able to depend on him. I wish I could remember the article/podcast/etc to verify that statement (I think it was Mike at ISD) but the bottom line, Max isn't a shoo-in unless he really steps up his game.

We're all couch coaches on this board. I can see talent just as well/bad as you. I just practice some modesty, which is a rare bird around here.

As he brags about being modest.

I have spring football fever. I apologize in advance for all of the fights over depth chart. I'm all fired up right now for football.

As you all know, I'm a big time Studstill supporter but I also don't see him unseating Max prior to the season starting. Could he by week 4, 6 etc.? Maybe but this is what you do when you have young talent that migh need to play down the road. You give them lots of reps when those reps are less meaningful, like Spring ball. With that said, if I'm Max, I better step my game up because Studstill isnt going to wait for anybody ;)

If I am remembering correctly, the thing that stuck out to me in that article was that Max thinks he knows it all already and doesn't listen to the coaches or make the adjustments they want him to make.

I do think Max will be the starter, but the coaches are probably sending him a message too.

maybe the impression is that with how thin we are at safety it's best to get reps for the #2 guy b/c we can't get Max hurt?

I mean it is spring after all and staying healthy is goal #1 for any staff in the spring/preseason camp.

Malik Zaire is growing frustrated with Notre Dame’s quarterback situation.

Zaire was the starter at the beginning of last year before suffering a season-ending broken ankle during the second game. DeShone Kizer came in, led the Irish to 10 wins and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl.

However, Zaire contends that he beat Kizer out last spring and shouldn’t have to prove himself again.

"You just really wonder what it's going to take to finally convince people enough that I'm able to do the job," Zaire told the Associated Press. "I don't make the decision. I'm going to keep balling and do what I need to do."

Zaire supplanted Everett Golson during the 2014 season and then earned the starting role for good the following spring. The change in quarterback caused Golson to transfer to Florida State. Zaire was impressive in a season-opening 38-3 win over Texas completing 19 of 22 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns. However, Zaire’s resume is limited compared to Kizer’s and coach Brian Kelly said he doesn’t subscribe to the theory that players shouldn’t lose their starting role because of injury.

"He really didn't have a body of work, where we could say, 'Well, he won the starting job.'” Kelly said of Zaire. “I think what it's allowed him to do is that DeShone Kizer had a very good body of work, and we're opening up the competition."

Zaire, Kizer and Brandon Wimbush are competing for the starting role this spring and Kelly said the competition is so close that he might not declare a starter for the fall. Instead, he might use different quarterbacks in different games depending on the situation.

The ordeal is similar to the one Ohio State faced last season with Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones. Jones, who led the Buckeyes playoff run to a national title in 2014, won the starting role in the fall, but ultimately lost it to Barrett, who commanded the Buckeyes through the latter half of the season. Miller bowed out of the competition early and moved to receiver, a position he plans to play in the NFL.

However, none of Notre Dame’s three competitors seem ready to relent on their pursuit of the starting role, especially Zaire, who is going through his third spring QB competition in as many years.

"I'm just going to continue to do what I need to do to help the team the best that I can do and things will come together as they should," Zaire said. "So I'm not too worried about it. I know at some point whenever they give me my chance, I'm always going to take advantage of it."

Its just spring practice. They are probably trying to get Devin quality reps since he could be asked to play a lot. Max also knows the scheme. Its already been mentioned but Max needs to spend more time working on the basics of being a safety.

b.s. on Malik's part for whining about having to prove himself.

did he not see the season DK had?

of course he has to prove himself. He has a much smaller sample size, it's only natural that he's going to have to compete.

maybe I'm reading too much into the comment, but they're going to put the best dude there and he's just going to have to prove to everyone that it's him.

There's a bunch of reasons for this.

- Studstill is apparently coming in swinging and with the ability to keep up, even as a true freshman.

- Studstill EE'd.

- Max has been good at best, definitely not great.

- Max has commitment to the team issues (sorry for going this far, but anytime you put yourself ahead of a major bowl game, you have an issue. Looking at you too, Tillery).

- Max perhaps doesn't care to listen and/or isn't motivated.

- Studstill is the #2, and WILL have to play. And 1st team reps for any #2 are inevitable in spring.

All in all, I'll be happy if he beats out Max. We know what we're getting with Max and if there's something better, start him. This is good for everyone and I'm sure a lot of factors are pushing this situation.

these situations always make me nervous at the chance of a divided locker room. malik is a very strong personality and I worry about what could be if he loses out.

I hope the 'promise' to Malik's parents when Malik went down don't come back to bite BK. They were on the showtime episode of Virginia. I don't think they should and I don't blame BK for trying to comfort the parents in the moment (afterall, I'm sure at the time he didn't see this competition turning out this way), but it's a little uncomfortable.

Pete Sampson in the message boards called BS on this. Says he's been around the facilities non-stop and hasn't picked up that vibe from Malik at all. I think Watson got a few borderline quotes and turned it into a very click-baity article.

I hope that is the case. It seemed out of character and that is part of what jumped out at me.

I absolutely do not buy Malik whining. That's not who he is, period.
Could he be internally frustrated? Maybe. But he would never openly complain, especially to a reporter.
Will not click.

He's not whining. He's frustrated. And he said it in a direct quote and clearly explained why he's frustrated.

And you don't need to click, because the article is copied right there lol.

Agree. There's little red meat to this story; just lots of supposition.

Is it really that out of character though? If I'm remembering correctly he's done this before. Didn't he openly complain to reporters last year that he wasn't given a chance against Golson and that he didn't get enough practice reps as an underclassman? I don't know if this can be purely blamed on him but there is a reason the "narrative" around him has always been some version of "nobody would give me a shot".

I remember when he was in competition with EG and people got in a tiff about his quotes. This is just more of the same. Words have a weird way of changing their meaning when put to paper versus context of an honest conversation.

Yeah, I don't know if it's 100% his fault, but I would've hoped the article last year would have been a learning experience.

He did have a few crazy quotes during his battle with EG, but he was a "good soldier" throughout this past year as DK was tearing it up. He never said anything during that time and I assumed(yeah, I know) that it was a sign that he was moving past those earlier comments.

In some ways he is probably using this as his own motivation.

Coaches need to be careful about what they say, but this is big boys football now and not peewee, MS or HS. Coaches will start the players they believe give them the best chance to win regardless of previous circumstances. He'll have plenty of time to shake off the rust and prove himself by the time fall camp begins.
