The problem with Kizer is that he isn't super accurate and doesn't have a particularly quick release. Right now, he projects as a poor man's Cam Newton... and a lot of teams would take a "poor man's MVP." But I'm not entirely sure he's a good enough passer to really succeed in the NFL, despite checking almost all the boxes.

I don't get the love for Mason Rudolph and Chad Kelly that I have been seeing in the 2017 mocks.

Chad Kelly is kinda douchey, but he played excellent last season. He was the first QB in Ole Miss history to beat Bama, LSU and Auburn in the same season. He was the Sugar Bowl MVP. He has great measurables. He is the nephew of a HoF quarterback.

He's a no brainer if we're talking projecting a player.

Goes beyond being douchey. He was kicked off of Clemson for conduct detrimental to the team and was arrested for a fight outside of a bar. Not too many high draft picks have those two things on their resume.

He'll survive his past if he performs, and doesn't screw up again.

...and he'll measure 6-1 and change at the combine. That doesn't mean he can't be great at the next level, it's just a box that gets left unchecked.

Nice to see he did so well at Oregon:

The senior transfer broke into the starting lineup at center in Oregon's Sept. 5 season opener and never looked back, providing the experience and maturity that was instrumental in the success of a new quarterback . . . Not only did the honorable mention all-conference standout start all 13 games, he seldom left the field with the game on the line before being forced to the sidelines in the Alamo Bowl vs. TCU . . . Proved to be a mainstay for a offense that ranked fifth in the country in rushing (279.9 avg.), scoring (43.0), and total offense (538.2) . . . After the season, he was presented with the Len Casanova Award - given to the Ducks’ first-year player who best exemplifies the athletic ideals and inspiration of the University’s former head coach and athletics director, as well as the Pancake Club Award for knocking down the most opposing defenders.

Really? Manziel was a first rounder. Winston was in the middle of rape allegations and stole crab legs from a grocery store. Cam Newton was recruiting scandal. Reggie Bush had a scandal that cost him his scholarship. Warren Sapp/Aqib Talib/ failed their pre draft drug test, Tunsil got busted smoking weed out of a gas mask and taking money as the draft was happening.

I could go on and on. Bad character guys get taken in the first round every single year. The more important they are as a player, the more the NFL will ignore... and there is no more important position than QB.

Was discussing this elsewhere I guess. He was injured in the Alamo Bowl and that probably cost him being drafted. From what i saw, he was projected to be a 6th round pick. One Walter Football mock I saw had him as the #5 (I believe) center and #10 guard available.

If he's healthy, I bet he sticks with someone.

Lets look at the QBs
Winston, legal trouble, and I don't believe that he was actually arrested.
Manziel: Arrested, and if not for the Browns, he would not have been picked in the first round.
Newton: Laptop theft in college
You have to remember that Chad Kelly was also kicked off the Clemson team, it isn't just that he had a run in with the law. Can you name a single high pick QB that was kicked off their original team? I can't remember a single one.
QB Chad Kelly kicked off Clemson football team for 'detrimental conduct' - SBNation.com

You are right that QB is the most important position but with that comes more scrutiny so things like arrests and being kicked of the team will be magnified not down played. Tunsil/Sapp/Talib were not the face of the Franchise, a QB picked in the first 2 picks is instantly the face of the franchise and is expected to be a leader. If there are similarly talented QBs, they will be picked first. Now there will come a point where someone will take a gamble on him (just look at Tunsil, most likely he would have been the first tackle but instead was the 3rd). I just find it hard to believe that Kelly is a top 2 pick especially with other talented options out there (Watson, Kaaya, etc.).

I'm sure I could find a bunch of guys kicked off their college team that got drafted, but just off the top of my head there's Randy Moss (FSU) and Marcus Peters. The latter kicked off of Washington and then drafted in the first round after the season.

We have seen year after year of character concerns at QB being drafted high. If Kelly has two great seasons at Ole Miss with no issues. NFL teams aren't going to give a crap about issues he had when he first got to college. Nobody is saying top 2, not sure where you got that. I just said first rounder and a guy considered as a top guy.

Two (Lawson and Lee) who are second team on depth charts but have significantly improved their PFF grades in 2018 (see below.)

Notes on those who are left as poor picks (9):

Three who are no longer with the same team who drafted them:
- Eli Apple, cornerback - Round 1, Pick 10 - NY Giants
Career-high overall grade: 65.0 (2018)
Just like the previous year’s first-round pick, Apple struggled to find a groove in New York. He earned overall grades of 58.9 and 64.5 in his first and second years in the league, respectively, and allowed a passer rating of 108.4 on throws into his primary coverage during that span, good for 79th among the 84 quarterbacks with at least 100 targets. behav, locker room, On October 23, 2018, the New York Giants traded Apple to the New Orleans Saints for a fourth round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and a seventh round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

- Corey Coleman, Wide Receiver - Round 1, Pick 15 - Cleveland Browns
Career High Grade: 61.7 (2016)
Coleman has shown flashes in his three-year career so far, forcing eight missed tackles from just 33 receptions as a rookie in 2016, but has also struggled with drops. Dropping nine of the 70 catchable passes thrown his way so far in his career, he was cut by the Browns last year and caught five passes with the Giants in 2018.On August 5, 2018, Coleman was traded to the Buffalo Bills for a 2020 seventh-round pick.[25] He was released by the Bills on September 1, 2018. On September 11, 2018, Coleman was signed by the New England Patriots. Coleman was released on September 17, 2018, to create a roster spot for his former Browns teammate Josh Gordon. On September 20, 2018, Coleman was re-signed to the Patriots practice squad.[29] On September 29, 2018, Coleman was released from the practice squad. On October 19, 2018, the New York Giants signed Coleman to their practice squad.[31] On October 25, 2018, he was promoted to the active roster. Coleman, as a restricted free agent, had a $2.025 million tender placed on him by the Giants on March 7, 2019.

- Paxton Lynch, Quarterback - Round 1, Pick 26 - Denver
Career-high overall grade: 49.7 (2016)
Where to begin, where to begin. Lynch simply hasn’t lived up the expectations most teams have for a first-round quarterback, which may also be why he is now with the Seattle Seahawks after two rough years in Denver. His 65.8 adjusted completion percentage in 2016 was worse than all but one starting quarterback from that year (Lynch played in only three games), and he hasn’t shown any significant development since then. In two seasons with the team, Lynch made just four starts and threw four touchdowns and four interceptions, released Sept 2, 2018. Seattle Seahawks[edit] On January 17, 2019, Lynch signed with the Seattle Seahawks after missing the 2018 season.

Others who are still with their drafting team:
- Shaq Lawson - Round 1, Pick 19 - Buffalo Bills
Career-high overall grade: 76.4 (2018)
It has taken Lawson some time to settle in, but the fourth-year edge defender out of Clemson has made significant strides in overall grade in each of his first three seasons. His rookie year ended in an overall grade of just 52.8, but since, Lawson has seen that climb to 65.3 in 2017 and 76.4 last year. Last year, Lawson recorded 23 total pressures on 220 pass-rushing snaps en route to the highest pass-rushing grade of his career at 65.0. Lawson’s run-defense grade of 80.9 in 2018 ranked 11th out of 103 qualifying edge defenders.

- Darron Lee, Linebacker - Round 1, Pick 20 - NY Jets
Career-high overall grade: 72.4 (2018)
If you had just gone off the first two seasons, Lee looked like he was setting up to be labeled a bust. He graded below 50.0 in each of his first two years, largely due to the fact that he was a liability in coverage (40.1 coverage grade in 2016 and 42.6 coverage grade in 2017). That all changed last year, though; Lee easily recorded the highest grade of his career at 72.4, and that came as a result of his coverage grade jumping all the way to 84.8 which ranked tied for fourth among 92 qualifying linebackers.

- Josh Doctson, wide receiver - Round 1, Pick 22 - Washington
Career-high overall grade: 63.3 (2018)
Doctson has never really lived up to his first-round billing, and three years into his Washington tenure, you can’t help but wonder if a change of scenery is just what’s needed for both parties. Doctson has failed to record a single-season overall grade above 63.3 since being drafted, and he’s had almost as many drops (6) as receptions from deep passes (9). Not a good sign for a player who was supposed to serve as a deep threat.

- Laquon Treadwell, wide receiver - Round 1, Pick 23 - Minnesota
Career-high overall grade: 53.3 (2017)
Treadwell has been one of the more disappointing first-round wide receivers taken in the last several years. He has not been able to carve out a major role in the Vikings’ offense, and when he has seen the field, Treadwell has not been impactful. He’s averaging just 9.2 yards per reception on 56 career catches, while Vikings quarterbacks have had a passer rating of only 67.4 when targeting him. That is not a recipe for more playing time heading into his fourth season.

Artie Burns, Cornerback - Round 1, Pick 25 - Pittsburgh
Career High Grade: 70.5 (2017)
Burns has been up and down in his time in Pittsburgh, coming away with four interceptions and 19 pass breakups but also allowing 13 touchdowns on 1,357 snaps in coverage over the past three seasons. He played a career-low 308 snaps and wound up getting benched in 2018.

- Joshua Garnett, Guard - Round 1, Pick 28 - SF
Career-high overall grade: 61.5 (2016)
It’s hard to throw the bust label on a player who has barely played, but Garnett is certainly hovering around it. After missing all of 2017 due to injury, the former first-round pick played just 59 snaps in another injury-riddled 2018. In his only full season, 2016, he struggled in three major facets — pass blocking, run blocking and penalties.

- Robert Nkemdiche, Interior defensive line - Round 1, Pick 29 - Arizona
Career-high overall grade: 59.5 (2018)
It’s been a rough three years for Nkemdiche, having yet to eclipse a 60.0 grade. However, it hasn’t been without a few bright spots. In 2018, his best season yet, he had two particularly strong outings: In Week 1, he had four quarterback pressures and two stops. In the best game of his career, Week 12, Nkemdiche racked up three sacks and six stops. Played five games in 2016, 12 games in 2017, 10 games in 2018. 27 gms played in three years.

- Germain Ifedi, Tackle - Round 1, Pick 31 - Seattle
Career-high overall grade: 55.2 (2018)
The former first-rounder just hasn’t panned out for the Seahawks. He’s yet to eclipse a season grade higher than his 55.2 mark this year, which ranked 72nd out of 82 qualifying tackles. Despite playing a ton of snaps, Ifedi hasn’t found his footing in pass blocking and has been a complete liability in the run game.

Notes on grades from PFF.

Conclusion: The first half of the first round usually results in solid picks.
