So we offered this guy? Or are we just making contact?
sounded just by the lil caption...showing interest
I haven't read any of the posting on 247, so maybe I'm missing something obvious here. But what possible reason could an uncommitted prospect's family have for telling Steve that ND is showing interest, and then asking them not to report it...? Doesn't really make sense at all.

Wouldn't surprise me if there are multiple "surprise" ILBs out there getting evaluated on their senior film that ND is pursuing now that they've missed on bigger fish... I don't know if that is causing some cross talk or something. But there are definitely some ILBs committed elsewhere that ND has ongoing contact with and is pursuing. Whether any of those are who Steve won't name I'm not sure, but why would Steve not be able to talk about interest in an uncommitted prospect?
i posted this above...the ONLY reason i could think of, is that they don't want a recruiting circus and being badgered by recruiting service reporters....why else

Beats me. Perhaps they just don't want the attention?

I mean... I guess? But then why answer the phone and talk to Steve in the first place? And just reporting an offer/interest seems pretty darn innocuous... and if you were a player trying to earn bigger offers wouldn't you under any scenario want the attention?

I think you guys are giving the only plausible explanation. I can't think of anything else. But it just doesn't make sense.

I guess if I really stretch, the only other scenario I can think of would be he actually got the info from a coach/source and was told not to leak the name because they don't want other schools jumping in to muddy the waters while ND is circling. So now Steve is passing it off as "can't share the name because family doesn't want me to"... but that's a pretty complex conspiracy theory I just came up with, and Steve has no reason to BS like that when he could just as easily have said simply "can't share name yet."

Anyways... there's just a whole lot that doesn't seem to add up if it's an uncommitted prospect trying to break out and garnering ND interest that mysteriously doesn't want to report any of the interest he is getting. So I'll wait to see if/when Steve reveals the name and if it's any of the people who have been hypothesized or we've heard thrown around. There definitely are some guys committed elsewhere that ND is working on that are sensitive situations and I originally assumed that's who he was talking about as it makes sense that those people wouldn't want their flirtations public for a myriad of valid reasons.

Is this about where we stand with our targets?

Bo Scarbrough- Likely in 2nd with a lot of ground to make up over Bama.
Nathan Starks- Have a legitimate shot if he can qualify for ND.
Michiah Quick- Neck and neck with OU but trending towards us.
Tyler Luatua- Locked up to commit this week.
Damien Mama- still have ground to make up and prob not coming.
Thomas Holley- PSU firmly in the lead and we need to do a lot to make up ground.
Matt Elam- Bama way out in front with us in second and a lot of work to do.
Nyles Morgan- Made up some ground on the visit but have a lot more work to do to catch Ole Miss.
JuJu Smith- Neck and neck with USC but likely trending toward SC
Payton Hendrix- ND his top school and likely to commit to us after visits.

Those Nile Sykes highlights looked really great. I can imagine him and Nyles Morgan in there playing together. Nyles and Nile, boys from Illinois.

Yea i think I know who Wiltfong may be talking about. Its a diff kid than the one I was told. There are gonna be a few tier 3-4 guys that start popping up that can really play some ball. But hopefully we get some good news tomorrow!

Yeah, I think that's right. There are at least three, apparently: 1) Brandon Lee, 2) recruit committed elsewhere who TP has heard about, and 3) uncommitted recruit who Wiltfong has heard about and whom we will visit this week (tomorrow or Thursday, depending on who you believe ... Loy is now saying that we will not visit this mystery recruit till Thurs.).

I think that's pretty close. Obviously, you left off some prospects, most notably Drue Tranquill who is still a coin flip+ to join this class.

Evaluating where we currently stand, it looks like we'll probably try to bring in ~8 more guys. The most sure bets right now are Luatua, Hendrix, and Tranquill in decreasing order of probability. So that leaves 5 spots, with nobody really close to a lock. Quick is an obvious target for one of them and we have a very solid chance at landing him.

So that would leave about 4 spots. McKenzie or another returner type guy might take one of them, but I don't think that happens if ND lands Quick. McKenzie needs to get his scores up drastically if he wants to go to any college, much less ND, so I just don't see that working out.

Smith, Morgan, Scarborough, etc. are all guys we'd love to fill out those last 4 spots with, but I don't think that's realistic. More likely than not I see us taking no RB (waiting on Starks to see how that plays out and trying to flip Bo until the end), 1 skill position player of some sort (Brown, Lazard, Sousa, Juju Smith), 1 DT type player (likely someone from the names that are just now starting to pop up), 1 ILB type player, and leaving one open spot because we always seem to do that.

Also, obviously we need to watch out for decommits. This season is trending in a bad direction and teams will continue to try to poach our recruits. Hopefully everyone sticks, but if history is any indication we're bound to lose someone somewhere along the way.

Which is why they need to give Erik Brown the green light. Stupid to not let this kid commit. Out of approximately 8 spots left, you listed about 2 or 3 who are likely to be Irish. The rest is a crapshoot. I can't believe they'd pass on a talent like Brown in hopes of landing some of these other guys that are long shots.

agreed. I thought that erik brown would be NDs backup plan if quick and McKenzie didn't workout. to me souse would be a step down from brown imo, little confused by this.

Confused by what? We didn't offer. He just set an OV.

Here's a question... do recruits look at this Notre Dame season and give the coaches a pass because of no Golson + injuries? Or do they look at the season and think that 2012 was a flash in the pan? I'm inclined to think the former, but I'm not sure.

Was initially planning on announcing at the AA game but has a Jan. 24th official set up to Vanderbilt and unless he cancels that (which I wouldn't expect) he'll be announcing closer to NSD. He will also be taking his 5th official to either Tenn. or Texas A&M. Apparently A&M is trying to make a late charge.

Very interesting. Wiltfong talks up Sykes in that article, too. Says he's having a "huge senior year." Sykes has to be the mystery LB he's been talking about, right?

He also said this in last weeks insider notes about Sykes

"A late major offer could propel that school out in front."

Thats where I'm at. Having a huge season, is due for major offers. He's put out two articles with those comments describing Sykes and then posted those as clues on the BGI board. I hope it is because I really like some of the tape i've found of Sykes.
