Per O'Malley, McGovern showed no ill effects after he returned from his injury

is this comparison about physical size? Can't believe the size of this frosh class.

Yes. Mike said he looked as big as Okwara already, and was shocked at how thick in the lower body he looked. He was very quick off the ball and made several plays in the backfield.

Notes from Sampson and Prister

Schmidt is very comfortable commanding the defense and it seems will be tough to unseat him. Deeb and Morgan just don't match that at the present time. Riggs was impressive. Very aggressive. Logjam at CB seemed to be the reason for Farley back at S. However, he did work at nickel/dime with Riggs in those packages. Tranquill at S. Hill and Bonner at LB. Not sure how long Bonner stays at LB. Not very comfortable in coverage. They note that Mokwuah and Cage are big boys @325 but their 325 isn't as sturdy or fit as say a Q. Nelson. Wouldn't be surprised if they drop some of that weight through camp. They mention that in the spring Zaire looked to be the more explosive athlete of the two QB's but Golson has closed that gap. Zaire was inconsistent with his accuracy today.

BGI had Bonner at DT. Someone was way off haha.

this with the report earlier that he was working with interior DL. Sounds like some sort of line play is in this kids future. Don't know if there are too many humans at 6'3" 270 that are good in coverage.

This all depends on the structure of the offense and his feel with Golson. Golson did not target eifert that much in 2012 especially when he was the best target we had.

Coach D on ISD also spoke glowingly about Brown, and was very complimentary of the talents of Daniels (got stronger), Fuller (blows by everyone), Carlisle (great quickness), and Hunter (ND is trying him everywhere to get him the ball). Also noted that Koyack looks great, and that Luatua looks great and could definitely be the 3rd TE this year. Doesn't look like a freshman at all.

He also noted that Ishaq had a GREAT day, John Tuner and Sheldon Day were very good, and he was impressed with Michael Deeb especially in run fits. Jaylon Smith was coaching and helping out fellow players and looking incredibly fast.

His final note was awesome - that our CB depth is outstanding. He said most years we would be talking about Butler and Watkins as being potential standouts, and they are running 4th and 5th. "Unreal".

Thanks everyone for the updates.

And with this post, I'll help myself to a keg of kool-aid, lol.

This only reconfirms what I have thought. The offense is going to be very explosive scoring above 30 ppg. The defense will also be explosive and have many big plays but we will give up a certain amount of points. Very excited to watch this team.

Riggs, Folston, and Bryant were fielding punts. Per BGI they think Riggs looked the smoothest of the group.

With the exception of Brown, BGI had the WRs a little rusty catching the ball, particularly Prosise

BGI notes that Golson ran the fast paced tempo noticeably smoother than that of Zaire.

The up-tempo nature of Monday’s practice at Culver Academies that kicked off fall practice stood out to head coach Brian Kelly as the main takeaway from day one.
Situated 40 miles away from campus, Notre Dame conducted its first practice on the side-by-side fields in Culver.

“I thought our tempo and our ability to run a lot of things offensively and defensively for the first day [was good],” Kelly said. “It wasn’t line up and run two, three plays. It was a lot of installation, a lot of plays, good tempo in two hours. Fairly hot. We haven’t had a hot summer, so all in all we got a lot of work in and we’ll have a lot of time with our guys to watch our film.”

Starting left tackle Ronnie Stanley was taken away in a cart midway through practice, but Kelly later clarified that the junior simply needed an IV on the 80-degree day. In his place, sophomore Mike McGlinchey subbed in at left tackle on the first unit.

“He just got an IV. Big fella who needed some fluids,” said Kelly, who added that Stanley is expected to return Tuesday. “First day, we were being a little cautious with him. I don’t think there was anybody today that we were concerned about. [Senior wide receiver DaVaris] Daniels had a tight lower back, just some first day kind of deal. Nothing to be alarmed about unless [head trainer] Rob [Hunt] hits me on the way to lunch.”

With offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Mike Denbrock out for a few weeks following a surgical procedure, Kelly spent most of his time during position drills with the receivers. With the young group, Kelly focused on fundamentals on day one.

“We spent a lot of time on releases and transitions and some of the things that can help them develop a solid foundation because they have a great skillset,” he said. “This week will not be about reinventing the wheel, but laying down a good foundation.”

Kelly said graduate assistant Ryan Mahaffey handled wide receiver substitutions during seven-on-seven and 11-on-11 drills with the head coach focusing on the entire offense.

The team will participate in some archery activities later this evening and other team-building activities while in Culver.

Quick hits
• When asked whether Will Mahone could potentially rejoin the program, Kelly replied: “I think Will’s going to look at other options.” The former Irish slot receiver was arrested in Ohio in June and has since been suspended by the university.

• Jaylon Smith is widely expected to be named a Notre Dame captain at some point in his Irish career, just not this year. Kelly, however, would not rule out naming the sophomore a captain by fall camp’s end.

“I think a sophomore could be a leader,” he said. “I wouldn’t rule it out of being a possibility. He’s a leader on our football team right now, whether he gets a ‘C’ on the jersey, we’ll see how that plays out. That’s not out of the realm of possibility.”

Yeah, that might be the best news of the day for me. A physical in-line TE was what I was afraid we lacked after Niklas left. I knew Luatua was capable of being that player if he worked hard to get into shape, but he came into his AA game with a less than imposing physique, so I wasn't sure what to expect. It sounds like he found his motivation.

Despite the very real quarterback competition, Everett Golson took every first-team snap during the two-hour practice.
First team offense during tempo and 11-on-11 drills: Golson; running back Tarean Folston; wide receivers DaVaris Daniels, Chris Brown and Amir Carlisle; tight end Ben Koyack; and offensive linemen (left to right) Ronnie Stanley, Matt Hegarty, Nick Martin, Christian Lombard and Steve Elmer.
The second team offense consisted of quarterback Malik Zaire; running back Cam McDaniel; wide receivers Corey Robinson, C.J. Prosise and Will Fuller; tight end Durham Smythe; and offensive linemen (left to right) Mike McGlinchey, Connor Hanratty, Mark Harrell, Colin McGovern and Quenton Nelson*.
The third team offense consisted of quarterback DeShone Kizer*; running back Greg Bryant; wide receivers Justin Brent*, Corey Holmes and Torii Hunter Jr.; tight end Tyler Luatua*; and offensive linemen (left to right) Jimmy Byrne*, John Montelus, Hunter Bivin, Justin Utupo and Alex Bars*.
With offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock away recovering from surgery, head coach Brian Kelly worked almost exclusively with the wide receivers.
Golson and Zaire had trouble connecting with receivers early on, often overshooting targets in passing drills. The timing improved during 11-on-11, though. Cam McDaniel caught a pass and juked safety Nicky Barratti to the ground. Brown grabbed a long bomb over KeiVarae Russell, and Daniels fell down while running a route and was still able to pop back up and snag the catch.
Stanley was carted off the field toward the end of practice, and McGlinchey filled in without hesitation. Kelly cleared up concerns during a post-practice interview, saying Stanley was just getting an IV. “He’s a big guy who needed fluids,” Kelly said. Stanley will return to practice tomorrow.
More of a special teams item, but Bryant, Folston and cornerback Cody Riggs fielded punt returns. Bryant and Folston fumbled enough balls to prompt coach Tony Alford to say, “I’ve about had my last drop.” Riggs looked the strongest out of the trio after one day of evaluation.
DEFENSE

First team defense during tempo and 11-on-11 drills: Linemen Romeo Okwara, Sheldon Day, Jarron Jones and Ishaq Williams; linebackers Jaylon Smith, Joe Schmidt and John Turner; and defensive backs KeiVarae Russell, Cole Luke, Austin Collinsworth and Max Redfield.
Cornerback Cody Riggs, the graduate student transfer from Florida, was far and away the most impressive defensive newcomer, though he stuck to mostly second team reps. Riggs was a pest all day, lining up inches away from receivers during 7-on-7s. Daniels burned him once, but otherwise Riggs’ physicality and aggressiveness looks promising.
Schmidt nearly had the play of the day, stepping in for what should have been a pick-six off a Golson throw that Schmidt ended up dropping. After practice, he said there were several plays he wanted back — and that was one of them.
Kelly was high on freshmen defensive tackles Daniel Cage and Pete Mokwuah during his season-opening press conference Friday, and both meet the physical mold of the position. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both of them slim down by the fall. With Tony Springmann’s absence, catching them up to speed is crucial this season.
Linebacker Jarrett Grace looks to be recovering well from his broken leg. He was limited in drills, but he was moving, jumping and cutting freely whenever he could.
