Only thing is Ok doesn't have Brian Kelly and the coaching staff ND does. Remember how many people lamented the fact that we "dropped the ball" and got a "lowly" Brian Kelly, instead of a proven, top performer like Bob Stoops?

The other problem I have with likening OK to where we were last year is that their defense has been taking a nose-dive. The last couple of years, they have been dropping off, statistically and with the depth chart. Some of us saw a top ten defense in the works at ND the year after Kelly came. Can anyone say that with the OK group?

After getting blasted by Navy in his first year, I can understand their frustration. My point wasn't to compare the two teams........... my point was that this is college football, not the NFL; there are new starters and question marks for every team, every year. I think ND will beat Oklahoma, but I wouldn't consider someone foolish for thinking it is not a certain outcome.

Temple is the only game on the schedule that is IMO a "stone cold lock." Purdue, BYU, and Pitt last season proved you gotta be ready to play every week, no matter the opponent. To consider Oklahoma a "certain win" is about as shortsighted as you can get. I truly think we win that game, but the Sooners aren't coming into town to play dead (although it would be nice if they did).

Agree 100%. I just feel that our program is at a point us homers had hoped for since 1996. And Imo the opponents I see we are going to beat. But that being said nothing comes easy.

Same reason we had no chance to beat them last year supposedly. Just seems like a trap game with them looking for redemption. Who knows? Just my opinion. I also said our only loss is to Stanford in my prediction..

Imo, Stanford is over rated this year... Nobody gave Harbaugh credit for last year, but that was really his team...

True... To a point! 3rd year and conditioning tho.. While Charlie was here I supported our coach, but there's a difference in what we were then and now... You can't say the same for a coach who literally won it all with someone else's recruits..

The thing is, I think Shaw is a pretty good, not great coach. I think what has helped him the most is having Stepfan Taylor, the monstrous O-linemen that Harbaugh brought, and the defensive talent they brought in. However, because of their success with Harbaugh's recruits, Shaw is able to keep bringing in great recruits. I still can't believe they have freaking Barry Sanders Jr. That's going to suck.

Harbaugh did a great job instilling toughness in a 3* star roster and having them play out of their skin. He also had Andrew Luck. It's not like Harbaugh recruited sure-fire college studs and Shaw just rode them to two 10 win seasons.

The fact that he avoided the expected drop-off and furthermore, actually recruited much better than Harbaugh, is what's most impressive.

Stanford will thrive in the trenches for at least the next 4 years. It's how Shaw has recruited and it's just simply their identity.

Kelly literally transformed every player on Charlie's roster into a better football player than they were previously. He demolished the mindsets, the physiques and the entire football entity and rebuilt it for longevity. That is why we made it to the NC and that is why we are attracting the best players in the country every year.

Cant disagree at all!! Your both rite!! I guess I'm just a lil biased to Harbaugh and came across in the wrong way... Great explanation!!

Barry Sanders jr is gonna be great to watch tho... Just not against us!! Still very jealous of that pick up, and look more forward to his NFL career bc of previous statement..

Irish were fortunate last year with injuries. The key every year is the first month...get by UM and MSU, and the sky's the limit. remember Weis? When you start 1-3, it's tough to get anything going. Start strong and take them one at a time. For me, UM and ASU are the key to success.

It's amazing how litte credit David Shaw gets for SU's success.

He is a former NFL assistant that has coached a various positions including LBs, TEs, WRs, and RBs.
AFTER he joined Harbaugh at SDS as OC, they lead 1AA football in passing, Total Offense, and scoring.

When Harbaugh went to SU he was smart enough to bring Shaw along with him as OC. It may be Harbaugh's players but it's been, and still is, Shaw's Offense.

The year after star RB Toby Gerhart left, when Shaw was OC and switched from coaching WRs to RB, SU had there Second Best Rushing Season ever. A point probably not missed by the Sander's family.

Shaw is a hot coach and an African American. The father of a former ND player from the South told me the deciding factor in his son's decision to attend ND was Ty Willingham as a role model. Someone they could relate to. They liked ND's academic record but Willingham was the clincher. SU and ND have similar academic credentials and student body size. SU has much greater diversity but it's due to higher Hispanic and Asian enrollment. Their AA enrollment is a little higher than ND's.

When Harbaugh left SU didn't go through the huge transition Michigan did going with Rodriguez nor as much as Weis to Kelly. It was largely seamless.

I suspect Shaw will continue to be successful. He's a good coach and can recruit offering a similar message to Kelly's. Plus he has that role model factor that some families identify with.

Agree on all levels, but he has to show me they can recruit. 2012's class was fantastic for Stanford and last years class stunk (with low scholly numbers). I would have expected a better class even with the low numbers.

They have some great recruiters, Sanford Jr being one of them. They got the McCaffrey kid, but only have 3 total committs up to this point. They will probably get the Chryst kid and they are looking good with Lealao as well. But outside of those two, they are not firmly ahead for anyone that is noteworthy that I can think of.

Given all the plusses that you listed out above, I would have thought their recruiting picture for this year would look better. I am not sure of their scholly count this year, but they have signed 53 the last 3 years, meaning that they should have a decent size class this year.
