Enlight of the Carlisle news who sees time primarily at running back and who sees time primarily at wide reciever?

Options:

RB-only: Wood, Mahone, Roberson
RB-WR: Atkinson III, Riddick, Russell, Neal, McDaniel

Not sure if people think Carlisle can line up at slot or not

IMO Carlisle will see more time at RB but will motion out of the backfield occasionally.

We can't rely on Roberson being healthy... his knee was destroyed.

Neal will not play RB in the traditional out of the shotgun sense but more of the Percy Harvin type at Florida.

Atkinson is primarily a RB, but can play slot if needed like Kelly wants all our RBs to do.

Any RB we have with the exceptions of the power guys were recruited to play RB and Slot

I believe Carlisle was recruited initially to play the slot. At USC, they threw a lot to him out of the backfield so I assume he has very soft hands.

If Golson starts then Hendrix will come in on short yardage IMO

But what if Rees starts?

RB #1: Wood
RB #2: Carlisle - motion out quite a bit (maybe out of 2 RB sets)

Riddick moves back to slot, plays RB occasionally.

i think it'll be closer to:
RB#1 Wood
RB#2 Carlisle/Riddick

i think the reason to cross train the slot/RB position, is not exclusive to "motioning out"--but education in reading blocks.

i see a ton more jet sweeps. lots of bubble screens. and kelly was notorious for using copious amounts of shovel pass/shovel option at GVSU. i see lots of these quick RB/slot guys getting basically a pitch and working in open space. this is not just a personnel issue--its a philosophy issue about what to do in space and reading your blocks--otherwise, instead of getting the ball at or near the LOS and turning it into 8-12 (or more) yards, it's stuffed. its all about timing and blocking for these little plays.

I don't care who they line up in the back field, I think we will be solid back there but if I see one, just one, of those POS lateral passes, I will come unglued and most likely be banned.

with Carlisle getting cleared...imo this really opens up the possibility of GA3 being moved back to WR permanently, although i really like him at RB

There is no play I despise more than the bubble screen. I would like to never see that play ran at Notre Dame again. I will follow BobD into the darkness if we see another one.

But word up on everything else.

Yeah I am tired of it too.

I wouldn't be tired of it if it was run effectively. I remember when my team (Hillsdale) played against Kelly at GVSU, they ran it a lot and ran it effectively (that and the delayed draw).

Run correctly the bubble screen is one of the most effective routes in football. Riddick, Jones and Goodman did not run them properly, Floyd did and it succeeded even though Rees never threw them properly.

That said I expect us to run them still next yr with everyone including Eifert

I don't necessarily mind the bubble screens so much as long as they are run effectively. Maurice Stovall and Matt Shelton used to tear it up on the bubble screens. It was almost a guaranteed 5 yards every time.

BS. I cant think of anybody that runs it well. It's the worst offensive play in football if you ask me. I know we threw it to Floyd all of the time, and it never went anywhere. So I respectfully disagree that Floyd succeeded at it. It was his most unsuccessful play.

Sure it puts the WR in a one on one situation. Unfortunately its flawed because the wide receiver is always stationary when its thrown to him. It takes way too long to develop and only works against slow, poorly prepared defenses.

The Bubble Screen has been our quintessential drive killer. Every time we ran it, we punted shortly after.

i agree and disagree...for Floyd it did work as it was a staple to see at least 3 of them a game...it was almost a guarantee 5 yards for him...HOWEVER as you said...it is very ineffective if you have legit def...and i am actually shocked that we didn't have any pick 6 from these as it was painfully obvious they were going to throw them...had there been a good db w/ anticipating this throw or being physical upfront at the line it would have been disaster

Any chance GA3 moves to defense?
Would love to see twin shut down corners.

or GAIII as a free safety. I've been wondering about it, and while I think GAIII could be ok at FS, it's not his highest and best use. He has the potential to be a real difference-maker with the ball in his hands, with his ability to go the distance any time he finds some space. It's just like with Neal ... I'm sure he'd be a solid CB, but he's got too much potential on offense not to play there.

#1 RB- C. Wood
#2 RB- C. McDaniel/W. Mahone/K. Russel

I would definitely leave GAIII and Riddick at WR.
