Yeah, it’s like calling blocking Witten’s weakness. Ok, yeah, he was better at catching…but he was still a top-5ish blocking TE.

I understand that Kelce is a great talent. But his blocking is garbage. He’ll likely be considered “greatest TE ever” when he retires, despite the fact that he sucked at half of his job. And then you have a guy like Witten who was truly great catching AND blocking. While Witten will still be a HOF, he won’t get GOAT status, though he really should.

I think Mayer could be another Witten.
Gronk was a better blocker than Witten, imo

Checking in at combine at 6’ 4.5” and only 249lbs. Had to cut 15 pounds in the last 3 months. Idk ND had him play so heavy.

Yeah I thought he wasn’t as explosive … still great but he needs to show explosiveness at combine

4.72 on 2nd attempt
Official time just posted - 4.70. Not bad for him but a lot of people on social media are melting down because his testing numbers aren't as good as some of the other TEs. He has looked very good in the drills though.

Hopefully, GMs don't overthink this like they did with Hamilton but this was always the worry. He was never going to test as well as some of the other TEs so the only fair eval of him is to look at his film and see his elite traits on display where it counts the most.

The perception on twitter is that his testing was terrible

2 tight ends ran mid 4.5s, 2 were slow over 4.8. Everyone else ran in a .11 second window from 4.59 to 4.70, no discernible difference for draft position on its own for the 40.

Everything is going according to plan for the Bengals… let everyone overthink it, let Mayer get to pick 28. Let’s go!

(Wouldn’t mind if Washington fell to 28… or Kincaid… or Laporta in the late 2nd if he falls that far after testing well… great class for teams that want a difference maker at TE.)

He held serve with the testing. Didn't wow anything but also wasn't awful either. He's always hung his hat on the tape and drills and that's what he'll have to continue to do until the draft

He lost 15 lbs to get faster to test well tho that’s not a good look

The 40 is a stupid test imo anyway. They don’t do it with any gear one like they do in a game situation. When does any start in a 3 point stance and run in a straight line for 40 yards?

I never understood this. Again just my opinion.

Not drafting Michael Mayer as the first TE is why the same shitty teams always draft in the first half every year. A world where Michael Mayer isn’t the number 1 TE but Anthony Richardson is the #1 QB is completely ignoring everything that took place on the field

It would hurt his checking account t to go later in the draft but it also probably means he is gonna play with a decent QB.

It's all about ceiling and upside.

He played at 250 the previous 2 seasons and still dominated. He doesn't have to go back up to 265. If GMs do their homework they won't care... and no, I don't expect all GMs to do their homework but I hope a smart one drafts him early.

It's all about ceiling and upside.

But what defines ceiling at the TE position? 40 times of 4.65 - 4.75 are not disqualifiers.

Leading TE by receptions in '22 and their 40 times:

1. Kelce ................. 4.61
2. Hockenson ..... 4.70
3. Andrews .......... 4.67
4. Engram ............ 4.42
5. Higbee ............. 4.67
6. Friermuth ........ 4.77
7. Kittle ................. 4.52
8. Conklin ............ 4.80
9. Everett ............. 4.62
10 Njoku ............... 4.64

I hear you guys. I'm just saying that scouts get obsessed with ceilings, upside and RAS scores.

Mayer will be fine. I see him being like a Jason Witten.

Yes, I was hoping Mayer would show better, but I think for him all that will matter come draft day is what is in this tweet. Gamer!!!
