This is awesome. Congrats to Kyle Hamilton! He probably deserved better than 3rd team All American...but I'm excited to see him get recognized for being the stud safety that he is!

I think the easiest way to protect inexperienced DBs is to apply tons of pressure and unless anybody comes close to the package Hamilton brings he will be more valuable overall at Sniper. I'm fine giving up a few deep balls if we nuke a couple drives a game with him up close.

Also, who on the schedule next year scares you blowing the top off the defense even with young DBs?

Pressure works if it gets home. And that’s the delicate situation Freeman will have to manage.

That’s a good question as I think Freeman will be game to game with his scheme, as Lea often was and as Freeman has been in the past. USC and UNC would be the two that stick out the most.

So is sniper rover?

Kind of?

It depends on what the opposing offense is doing, and how Freeman counters with personnel.

Whereas JOK was essentially the third linebacker as a Rover, Freeman's defense will use three linebackers AND a Sniper if the opposing offense wants to use TE's and run the ball.

If the opposing offense wants to spread you out and throw the football to 3/4 WR's, a linebacker comes off and an extra CB comes on, but the Sniper is still on the field doing his thing regardless.

I'd just add that another difference that might be noteworthy, where the heavy package for Lea included the Rover position. It was basically his base 4-2-5 defense. In Freeman's scheme, the 'heavy' package removes the Sniper and a CB/S for a 3rd SAM LB and 4th DL.

Now, as that article by 18stripes illustrates, he didn't use it much at Cincy. But, I don't think it'd be unreasonable to expect him to play that a little more at ND based on personnel and opponents. To add even another caveat to this conversation, maybe Freeman finds a 'Sniper' at ND that stays on the field in those packages.

UNC is about the only one IMO.

Yep, sniper for me. I only want him getting picks, sacks, pressures and TFLs. Oh and strips.

I think you and Lucky are right. Sometimes the schedule just lines up right to put your best athlete in a spot and let him cook.

Not USC? I would understand if NC didn't lose their 4 best skill position players (assuming Newsome enters the draft), but they seem to be about the same talent level as SC given the attrition at both schools.

Going to enjoy the hell out of watching Hamilton this fall. I don't see any way he doesn't leave for the draft with his stock.

MAYBE if he sees the '22 potential and has that desire for some unfinished business but I am not getting my hopes up. 1st round lock next April.

He'd prolly be a first round pick this year if he were eligible.

There's some playing on Twitter between Rees and Freeman on Kyle playing receiver.

I think it's seriously that time to have that conversation.

Hear me out.... Can we make him strictly a red zone receiver? This limits how often he'll need to practice offense and also may help draw Mayer more 1 on 1 opportunities in the red zone where he's going to be double teamed often if not all the time.

As a coach I think this keeps it simple enough for Kyle while also helping out at a position where we are going to be very thin..... Thoughts?

Here's an article that discusses it and even mentions the red zone idea.

Fair question and I’m sure there are some fine opinions on the subject. I’ll share mine- I believe we need to lock this thread for the next 3 months or so. Mods?

If this were NCAA14, Hamilton would be playing full-time both ways, catching go routes and hauling in INT's, and also running wildcat QB in the redzone to keep his rushing numbers respectable.

Terrible idea because we are so thin at S. What do you do when Hamilton gets hurt on offense and we're now down an AA safety? We have enough playmakers at WR that can step up that this seems like a very risky move for only a possible benefit.

I don’t like the idea of him playing receiver. If we have to play 4 tight ends in the red zone.

If we want another tall receiver the the RZ, just get one of the O line guys. With their size, DB's would just bounce off of them.

This is where I'm at. For those saying no, because of risk of injury. I will point out Charles Woodson played CB fulltime, WR part-time and fulltime punt returner. If Charles could do it and win the Heisman than Kyle can do it and win a Heisman. I'm all for Kyle playing 10-15 snaps on offense.

Wonder what type of money this will bring in for them. I have worked a few podcast ad deals for clients and just to get a 30-60 spot on a top 100 podcast is crazy money. The standard rate is $20-$30 cost/thousand listeners. Every ND fan subscribing/listening will only help them.

I'm wondering how much this extra work will affect his football play and academics.

Hopefully, a family member can do the day-to-day heavy lifting so that the kids just have record and be done.

No, we don't want a family member going to class for him.

I would imagine the scheduling and priorities would be discussed up front.

I'm sure they are able to find 3 hours or so a week to come together and hang out making this. There's probably some production behind the scenes helping them with what they have to prepare for, how long each will be, etc.
